Chapter 734: Blood's Edge
Chapter 734: Blood's Edge
"Oh? So you're here for me, huh."
Apu smiled faintly. "Why would that be? Let me think... If the Navy's just here to catch pirates, those guys over there are clearly more threatening than me. I'm just a thief, yet you're targeting me first."
He paused thoughtfully. "Zeff's apprentice, perhaps?"
Before Kuro could react, Apu suddenly leaped backward, vanishing into the ruins of nearby structures as his aura disappeared entirely.
"Gone again."
Kuro wasn't particularly bothered by losing sight of Apu, but the fact that his Observation Haki couldn't sense him anymore was strange.
Earlier, his Observation Haki had only detected two people. While sensing presences was just one aspect of Observation Haki, its true strength lay in detecting danger. That was exactly why he'd noticed Apu in the first place.
"Another Devil Fruit user?" Kuro muttered.
At that moment, Sig suddenly leaped down from atop the structures, staring at Kuro. "So you're the one who killed Chuan Zang? I thought Chuan Zang himself was giving off that terrifying killing intent. That sword's in your hands now."
"That's right. Seems like Golden Lion's stronger than we imagined."
Suddenly, Apu's voice rang out beside him. The thief had appeared next to Sig without a sound, grinning at Kuro. "Perfect. Let's deal with you first since you're the most dangerous threat, then take down Tatsumaki and Momousugi. The World Government will really take a hit."
Kuro chuckled. "Pirates... Always good at dreaming big."
"Hey, Giruon, aren't you coming down to help?" Apu called upward.
"I only want to fight strong men one-on-one!" The rough-voiced man above thundered like a muffled drumroll.
Kuro glanced upward, eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
"Forget it. We don't need him—we're more than enough", Sig grinned malevolently.
He stepped forward, red scales suddenly erupting across his entire body and face. His pupils turned golden vertical slits, sharp fangs protruded from his mouth, and a powerful red-scaled tail lashed behind him, striking the ground with each movement and leaving faint cracks in its wake. This body radiated pure strength.
"A Zoan type?" Kuro clicked his tongue. "Another Devil Fruit user."
"I'm Sig, the Red Dragon!" Sig proclaimed with a wicked grin. "I've eaten the Zoan Devil Fruit, Dragon Dragon Fruit - Ancient Type: Crimson Lizard Model, transforming me into the Crimson Lizard Man!"
"Ancient type, huh? I thought you might be a mythical beast for a moment, which got me excited for nothing. Obviously, you couldn't be a mythical beast. Otherwise, Kaido would've declared you his mortal enemy."
Kuro sized Sig up. "Still, you'll do for my first bloodletting."
"First blood? With that rusty old blade?" Sig laughed loudly. "That sword's only good for projecting killing intent! Chuan Zang used it too—we know its effects. While it gives its wielder strength, the blade itself has no real damage potential. It's just a broken-down sword that can't even cut through my scales!"
That blade was like this in Chuan Zang's hands—granted him considerable strength, but the old blade couldn't penetrate his defenses!
When it came to defensive power, his scales were extremely tough!
"Oh?"
Kuro tightened his grip on the long blade, lifting it higher. Neon light reflected off the nicked, rust-like blade, casting an eerie crimson glow that instantly spread across the entire sword. Though narrow, the blade looked elegantly elongated in Kuro's tall hands.
This was a long katana, the ideal sword for the Shinmeiryu Style.
"The way I use this blade is nothing like that copycat's."
Whoosh!
As the final word left his mouth, he was suddenly right in front of Sig.
Kuro had vanished and reappeared in a flash, the blade trailing blood-red light as it slashed through the air.
The slash wasn't particularly fast, but as Sig started to dodge, his entire body suddenly froze. His golden eyes widened in terror.
As if some nameless fear had sprouted in his heart, an overwhelming oppressive presence rendered him completely immobile.
Conqueror's Haki?! No... This was different.
This was... The same killing intent from earlier!!
"Krrrsh!!"
The searing pain snapped Sig back to his senses. He grunted and staggered backward, clutching his left shoulder.
His entire left arm had been cleanly severed, the cut smooth without a single jagged edge.
The red-scaled arm fell to the ground, looking dull and lifeless compared to Sig's vibrant form. The blood flowing from his wound wasn't even viscous—it looked strangely dispersed.
The Yokai Blade that had severed his arm now gleamed with thick, sticky blood, as if absorbing the very essence of life.
Then the blood vanished from the blade—not scattered, but simply disappearing as though devoured.
At the same time, the blade's nicks slowly filled in, regaining some of its former sharpness and luster.
"This is how a Yokai Blade should be used", Kuro smiled lightly. "This sword never needs repairs or resharpening."
A sufficient amount of killing intent allows this Supreme Great Quick Blade to unleash its true power—absorbing blood to replenish itself!
No blade lasts forever.
Even the mighty Black Blade, strengthened through Haki, would eventually develop nicks or break from prolonged combat, requiring skilled swordsmiths for repairs. Ordinary swordsmiths would only degrade their quality.
Many famous blades from the Eighty-Three Famous Blades list had fallen from prominence due to improper repairs after breaking.
But the Yokai Blade, this Supreme Great Quick Blade, required no such maintenance after battle.
At the moment it receives enough killing intent, it activates another effect—absorbing blood to heal its damage.
This was essentially an unbreakable blade.
Even if his comrade—the Navy officer with the Rust-Rust Devil Fruit ability—touched this blade, as long as any fragment remained, Kuro could use that remnant to kill again, absorbing blood to restore the blade to its original state.
Gazing at the slightly restored blade, Kuro addressed Sig. "Your blood alone might not be enough, but if I take all three of you big pirates down, this blade should recover more than halfway. Three major pirates as the first offering to test my sword—this Supreme Great Quick Blade won't feel disgraced at all."
