Chapter 730: The Fall of the Camp
Chapter 730: The Fall of the Camp
As soon as the figure appeared within the surveillance zone, several mounted machine guns immediately opened fire, their bullets pelting the area.
However, the bullets merely bounced off the figure, falling to the ground with a clatter.
The figure didn't seem to make any noticeable movements, as if only slightly moving its hand, and then several security personnel wearing mental shields and heavy armor were suddenly shaken, their heads exploding in an instant.
The machine gun fire ceased, leaving only the lingering echoes in the hall.
The security personnel, all elite and well-trained, didn't halt their attack despite the guns falling silent. They swiftly drew their sidearms and aimed at the figure, firing continuously. For a moment, various gunshots echoed throughout the hall.
In a fleeting moment, the figure vanished from the doorway, and the next instant, the security personnel felt their bodies lift off the ground, not just themselves, but everyone armed within the space.
Chen Chuan's body suddenly halted, and his windbreaker and scarf fluttered violently forward. In the brief moment when his movements stopped, the metal walls around him reverberated with a booming rumble, shaking incessantly. Behind him, the security personnel who had been suspended in mid-air began to fall.
Chen Chuan hadn't done anything; he had simply rushed towards the crowd with incredible speed, and the force of his charge alone had sent everyone flying.
After the sound of bodies hitting the ground ceased and no further commotion followed, Chen Chuan looked ahead. This was a three-story building, but most of the people were not on the ground floor; they were in the underground space.
He slowly descended the metal stairs, and as he reached a corner, two armed security personnel, who had taken stimulants, abruptly spun around, attempting to activate their flamethrowers.
However, their movements were painfully slow, and every action was within the range of Chen Chuan's spirit and domain. As the corridor filled with scorching flames, his figure seemed to flicker, and he appeared behind one of them.
With a stone in his palm, he struck the back of the person's head, causing both their heads to explode simultaneously, and they collapsed to the ground. The flames continued to surge upwards for a while.
Without a second glance, Chen Chuan continued towards the next level. Only when he reached this floor did he open the door and find a small-caliber cannon aimed at him. With a loud boom, a flashing fireball was ejected, and the cannon even jumped off the ground.
But it was the same story; the cannon was large and unwieldy. In Chen Chuan's eyes, everyone's movements were exceptionally slow. Before the cannon could even vibrate, he had already reached the gunner's side and struck with a casual punch. The cannon, which had just bounced up, was forcefully smashed back down, and with a loud crash, both the cannon and the gunner were twisted and embedded into the reinforced floor below.
As the echoes of the explosion faded, the entire underground space became eerily quiet. Chen Chuan glanced around and noticed an open metal well nearby, with a metal ladder leading further down.
Renault was hiding in the lowest level of the underground space, the largest area in the entire region, which had been converted from a former insect nest.
He knew that a direct confrontation with an enemy like Chen Chuan was impossible, but that didn't mean there was no solution. Right beneath him, buried in this very level, was a large amount of high-explosive dynamite.
At that moment, Renault was looking upwards, his hand gripping a lever. If Chen Chuan pursued him, he would immediately detonate the explosives, shattering the entire area. Even a Tier Three Fighter couldn't withstand such an explosion; even if they didn't die instantly, they wouldn't be left with much.
Of course, Renault didn't want to take Chen Chuan down with him. So, he stood in a fully protected safety room and had already injected himself with regenerative medication. With this level of protection and his fighter's physique, he might have a slim chance of survival.
Chen Chuan had reached the stairwell and glanced at the boundary token, which showed approximately ten people below, all appearing extremely tense. However, as he approached, he sensed an ominous omen in his spirit.
His eyes flickered slightly, and instead of descending, he turned and left the surveillance zone, closing the doors behind him.
After exiting, he quickly located a significant amount of algae oil stored in a secure warehouse nearby. There was also a transport vehicle, so he loaded the oil onto it and drove through the camp, opening and spilling the oil barrels at critical locations.
After a full circuit, he deemed it sufficient and collected the gun core. Then, he ignited the algae oil, and soon, the entire camp was engulfed in raging flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
Outside the camp, Yang Yongcheng watched the entire scene unfold from the hillside. Witnessing Chen Chuan's effortless dominance, he felt his blood boil. Unable to stay put any longer, he rushed down the slope towards the camp.
Below the ground, Renault waited for a long time, but Chen Chuan didn't show up, and the temperature around him kept rising. Finally, he felt something was wrong. He rushed out of the safety room and looked through a periscope to check the situation outside. What he saw was a raging fire, and his heart sank.
He suddenly realized with a sense of despair that even hiding here was useless. Chen Chuan only needed to start a fire outside, and there was no need for him to enter.
There were many power plants outside, all running on algae oil, and because they needed to burn the endless swarm of bugs, there was still a lot of algae oil piled up nearby. It was enough to burn everything, including the area around Renault.
Staying here any longer was just waiting for death.
But going outside to fight Chen Chuan was also meaningless, and it would only end in his death.
In his desperation, he returned to the safety room and pushed the detonation lever.
A loud boom echoed through the entire monitoring area, and the shockwave was so powerful that it blew the top cover hundreds of meters into the sky.
Just as Yang Yongcheng had rushed into the camp, he heard the explosion and felt his head buzzing. The shaking ground almost caused him to lose his balance. He shook his head vigorously and it took a while for him to recover.
From a distant platform that offered a panoramic view of the surroundings, Chen Chuan looked up at the billowing black smoke rising from the fire. He then glanced at the Boundary Token, and the life signs of the people there had completely disappeared.
At that moment, continuous explosions echoed around the camp, likely caused by the flames igniting other explosives in the area.
With a loud boom, the tall mooring tower used for docking airships slowly tilted to one side and eventually collapsed in the fire.
Standing on the platform, Chen Chuan held the Snow Lady Sword, and the flames were reflected on his crystal faceguard. The heat and swirling air currents caused his peaked cap and scarf to flutter uncontrollably.
When Yang Yongcheng arrived, he was stunned by the scene before him.
Chen Chuan noticed him and removed his faceguard, asking, "Senior Yang, why are you here?"
Yang Yongcheng, overwhelmed by the sight, replied honestly, "To be honest, I never imagined that you alone would destroy this camp."
If Chen Chuan had told him beforehand, he would never have believed it. But now that the reality was right in front of him, he still felt a bit dazed, and it took repeated glances at the surroundings to convince himself that it was real.
Struggling to keep his emotions in check, Yang Yongcheng said with a hint of excitement, "Supervisor Chen, I saw you from above. I came to see if you needed any help, but I think you've got it under control. You've destroyed this camp; that was your mission, right? You've succeeded!"
Chen Chuan shook his head. "No, not yet."
Yang Yongcheng was taken aback. "Not yet?"
Chen Chuan looked at the distant forest and said, "This is just a rear base. Their main force isn't here; they've ventured deeper into the Convergence Zone to retrieve that relic. They are my real target."
Yang Yongcheng nodded slowly. His guess had been conservative, but given Chen Chuan's demonstrated strength, it seemed only natural. Still, he couldn't help but ask, "Supervisor Chen, are you alone? Is there no backup?"
"My backup arrived earlier. I'm the one providing support now."
"I see..."
After a moment of thought, Yang Yongcheng said earnestly, "Supervisor Chen, your next step is to venture into the unknown territory, isn't it?"
Chen Chuan nodded.
Yang Yongcheng looked outside and said seriously, "Supervisor Chen, there are still many camp watchtowers ahead with enemies. Please rest, and leave those people to me. I'll take care of them."
Chen Chuan wasn't tired, and he hadn't suffered any significant exhaustion. However, he understood that Yang Yongcheng, being a former soldier, would find it hard to stand by while his teammates fought in the front lines.
After all, Yang Yongcheng was once a member of the pioneer squad, and dealing with the remaining guard posts was no problem for him. So, he didn't refuse.
"Old Yang, I'll leave it to you then."
Yang Yongcheng nodded firmly and said, "Leave it to me." He turned and rushed out. In the firelight, a gust of wind hit him, lifting his headgear and revealing his now grayish-white hair. But his remaining eye was intensely focused, and his charging figure exuded determination and courage.
Meanwhile, the airship that had left the camp flew for an afternoon before finally reaching the nearest rear communication hub. From there, an urgent telegram was sent to the Union delegation and the Linax Federation's diplomatic team.
