Chapter 73: The Rampaging Wizard's Chess
Chapter 73: The Rampaging Wizard's Chess
Ivan immediately understood. No wonder Voldemort chose today to steal the Philosopher's Stone. As long as he knew some of the Secret Passages in Hogwarts, he could sneak in smoothly. With Dumbledore preoccupied, he had nothing to fear.
From the fact that Voldemort had hidden one of his Horcruxes in the Room of Requirement and found the Chamber of Secrets, it was clear he had explored the school deeply and knew about some of the Secret Passages.
"What do we do now? Just wait here for Quirrell to steal the Philosopher's Stone?" Ron felt a wave of despair, as they were in a difficult situation with no way out.
"We can't just stay here. When Quirrell gets the Philosopher's Stone and comes out, we'll still have to face him. Fluffy could wake up at any moment!" Hermione was frustrated, tugging at her brown hair. Despite her brilliant mind, she couldn't think of a solution.
"Let's just go and stop Quirrell from getting the Philosopher's Stone. We have four people, and he's only one!" Harry said, mustering his courage.
"Quirrell isn't as weak as you think. He might be working with the Dark Lord, Voldemort", Ivan said calmly.
"Voldemort?" Harry exclaimed in surprise.
Ron and Hermione were even more shocked, unable to speak. They had thought dealing with a professor would be tough enough, but now the opponent had escalated to the Dark Lord himself.
"That's even more reason to stop him! Quirrell must be planning to offer the Philosopher's Stone to Voldemort or to resurrect him", Harry said firmly after his initial shock.
In fact, Ivan was also having an internal struggle.
Go, or not go?
If he planned it right, he might be able to catch Quirrell or Voldemort off guard, just like when he rescued the dragon. He could use the protective magic in Harry's body to bypass the fight and directly kill Quirrell.
All he needed to do was to use a lethal spell when Quirrell was immobilized by Harry.
This would complete the bizarre promise task and unlock bloodline magic, giving him more self-defense capabilities before returning to Diagon Alley.
But Ivan wasn't naive enough to think everything would go as smoothly as he imagined. If anything went wrong, he would have to face the final boss from the original story.
Even in his weakened state, Voldemort was extremely dangerous!
"If you want to leave, there are some brooms over there", Harry pointed to the brooms by the door. Once he learned Quirrell was involved with Voldemort, he decided to stop him.
"Forget it. Just because we don't want to let Quirrell off doesn't mean he'll let us off. I don't want to constantly watch my back for a hidden enemy", Ivan sighed.
Although Ivan knew that even without their interference, Voldemort wouldn't get the Philosopher's Stone, this didn't solve the problem. Once Voldemort realized he had been tricked by Dumbledore, he would be more cautious and angry. When they went on holiday, they would be in danger.
Hermione and Ron also didn't plan to leave. For the young lions of Gryffindor, danger was acceptable, but letting a friend face it alone was not. Besides, in their impression, Quirrell didn't seem very smart.
Maybe they could beat him?
Just as Ivan made his decision, a task notification sounded in his mind.
[New Task Activated
Task Objective: Seize the Philosopher's Stone!
Task Reward: Alchemy Knowledge
Task Description: This is a series of challenges meticulously prepared by Headmaster Dumbledore. Although most of the defenses have been destroyed, the difficulty of the challenges remains high. Prepare for death before entering.]
The sudden task notification made Ivan feel a bit better. This meant that if he successfully stopped Quirrell, he would complete two tasks at once.
The rewards were substantial.
As for the danger, he had known about it from the beginning.
"Let's go", Ivan composed himself and continued walking out of the small room. The wooden door had already been destroyed, so they didn't have to ride brooms to find keys.
As they moved forward, Ivan thought the next challenge would be a simple Wizard's Chess game, but when they got closer, it looked more like a gruesome battlefield.
Disembodied chess pieces were scattered on the ground, slowly repairing themselves under the influence of magic. The remaining dozen or so intact pieces turned to look at them.
These stone pieces had no faces or eyes, yet Ivan felt they were staring at him. Clearly, they didn't rely on eyes to lock onto targets. Ivan quickly concluded that the Disillusionment Charm would be ineffective here.
The moment Ivan stepped in, the stone soldiers drew their swords, a one-armed knight climbed back onto his horse and gripped his lance, and the king raised his scepter high.
"Are we playing a real-life Wizard's Chess?"
Looking at the stone pieces, each two to three meters tall, Ron swallowed hard. Although he was good at Wizard's Chess, the real-life version was a different story.
Unfortunately, the attack had already begun as they entered. The stone soldiers marched forward with heavy steps, and the lone knight charged at them on his horse.
"Four Point Spell!" Ivan cast a Dissendium, causing the front legs of the stone horse to explode. The knight tumbled to the ground, his head shattered.
But the knight got back up and began to absorb the scattered stones, slowly repairing his injuries.
"They can repair themselves. How are we supposed to fight them?" Harry said in exasperation.
"Try to attack their legs to limit their movement. Then cast the Aronia Charm and charge forward!" Ivan tapped himself with his wand, and an invisible magical barrier enveloped his body, giving him a sense of security.
The Aronia Charm, while used by wizards for defense and to deflect specific spells, also provided physical protection. Its essence was to create a magical barrier around the body, offering some resistance to physical damage.
"But we don't know the Aronia Charm!" Ron tried using a Leg-Locker Curse on one of the stone soldiers, but it had no effect. He shouted in despair.
