Chapter 73: Tasks and Contribution Points
Chapter 73: Tasks and Contribution Points
After leaving the puppet factory, Amy led the three of them to the magic plant garden and finally headed straight for the warehouse.
The last stop of their tour of the base was the warehouse.
As they approached the warehouse, Xie Man heard a melodious tune from a distance.
"It's a violin," Artyr said, closing his eyes to listen for a moment, his tone certain.
"Hmm." Cole nodded. "The player is very skilled, even better than the violin teacher I had before."
Xie Man scratched his head; he couldn't discern the difference but found it pleasant to listen to.
"It's little Gilly playing, she loves the violin the most," Amy said, leading the way toward the warehouse.
Xie Man and the others suppressed their curiosity and hurried to catch up.
When they reached the warehouse, they saw a small chair placed in front of the door, with a tiny figure sitting on it, intently playing the violin.
The figure was only about twenty centimeters tall, with a slender and delicate appearance, like a girl shrunk down to a minuscule size.
She had slightly scaled, light green skin and deep green hair adorned with shells and pearls, wrapped in a cloak made of various colored seaweeds, giving her a unique and beautiful look.
Artyr's eyes lit up. "So cute!"
Xie Man hesitated. "Is this... a fairy?"
"Amy is right, Gilly is a Gillyfin, a helper that Su Nan summoned from another world a few days ago," Amy explained.
Another world? Gillyfin?
Xie Man and the others were impressed but puzzled.
"Don't let Gilly's young appearance fool you; she has lived for many years. Gillyfins are a very rare immortal race."
The three apprentices immediately widened their eyes in surprise.
An immortal race!
Does that mean she's immortal?
Is there really such a race in this world?
At that moment, the melodious violin music slowly came to a stop, followed by a soft and pleasant voice.
"Amy, it's not a good habit to talk about a lady's age behind her back."
"Why, it's the truth," Amy turned back, looking puzzled.
Gilly, who had walked over, gave her a helpless glance, sighed, and then turned to Xie Man and the others with a smile. "Nice to meet you, I'm Gilly, the new warehouse manager."
Xie Man and the others snapped out of their shock and quickly introduced themselves.
"I know who you are; Lord Su Nan told me about you."
Gilly smiled, gestured for the three to follow her, and led them to a bulletin board.
"Take a look at this."
Xie Man and the others focused their attention on the bulletin board, which listed various tasks:
- Tending to magic plants
- Cleaning the laboratory
- Extracting Moonflower
- Maintaining Clay Golems
- Repairing humanoid targets
- Creating Lesser Elixir of Vigor
- Creating Lesser Dragon's Blood Elixir
- Creating Elixir of Mighty Strength
- Forging Black Rock Leopards
There were roughly twenty to thirty tasks in total.
Each task was marked with a location, time, acceptance conditions, and the contribution points earned upon completion.
Tasks like tending to magic plants, cleaning the laboratory, and maintaining Clay Golems offered the least contribution points, only single digits.
Next were tasks like extracting Moonflower and repairing humanoid targets, which offered over ten contribution points.
However, the former required knowledge of potion-making, and the latter required mastery of the zeroth-level spell "Repair."
Neither of these were tasks they could take on at their current level.
As for the subsequent tasks involving potion-making and forging Black Rock Leopards, they were even further out of reach.
Looking at the tasks, Artyr seemed to be deep in thought and turned to ask, "Lady Gilly, can the contribution points earned from completing tasks be used to exchange for certain items?"
"Call me Gilly."
Gilly nodded, confirming Artyr's guess.
"You're right, the contribution points earned from completing tasks can be exchanged for resources here."
"Among wizards, there's a rule: equal exchange."
"To get something, you must give something of equal value, including knowledge."
"The meditation techniques, knowledge, and potions you received earlier were gifts from Lord Su Nan as your teacher."
"However, from today on, you must earn resources through your labor."
Gilly led the three to another bulletin board, which listed various resources. From basic materials like clay, silver, blackstone iron, and silver moonflowers, to various books, and even more precious items like super potions, lesser magical items, and rune gems—things that made Xie Man, Cole, and Artyr's hearts race, as they had heard from Amy just how valuable these items were. Everything was available, even steel golems!
The sight made their hearts race with excitement. However, when they saw the contribution points required to exchange for a steel golem, their hearts sank, and they quickly dismissed the unrealistic idea.
"You're quite lucky, you know."
Amy said from the side.
"The Starlight Continent is resource-poor, and many of these items are impossible to find outside. Only Lord Su Nan can obtain them."
"As long as you work hard, you won't lack the resources to quickly enhance your strength."
Xie Man, Cole, and Artyr were filled with a surge of passion at Amy's words. Over the past few months, through their studies and conversations with Amy, they had come to understand the importance of resources for a wizard's apprentice. Without sufficient resources, even meditating to increase their mental power would be difficult, let alone pursuing the truth.
Now, their teacher had provided them with a platform. A platform where they could exchange labor for resources. As long as they worked hard to earn contribution points, they could continuously grow stronger, until one day, they would become powerful wizards like their teacher!
"I'll be here in the warehouse. If you want to take on tasks, check your contribution points, or exchange items, you can come find me anytime," Gilly said.
With that, she picked up her violin again. Seeing this, Xie Man and the others tactfully said their goodbyes and left.
On their way to the living quarters, Amy continued to chatter, "Don't let Gilly's small size fool you. She's an excellent archer and knows various enchantment spells, detection spells, and invisibility spells. Even I'm no match for her."
Xie Man, Cole, and Artyr responded half-heartedly, their minds already drifting to other thoughts.
To the young apprentices, everything they had seen was so new and exciting. Before today, they had read many books and believed they had a good understanding of the wizard's world. But after seeing the facilities in the base, they truly felt like they had lifted the veil and glimpsed a corner of the wizard's world. Their previous self-assurance now seemed as shallow as a frog at the bottom of a well.
Especially for Xie Man, the realization was profound. Thinking back to his dream of living in a castle, he couldn't help but laugh at his former naivety. This world was far more vast and complex than he had imagined. Compared to the vast and mysterious wizard's world, a noble's castle was nothing more than a grain of sand.
"I must become a wizard and see more of this world!"
In that moment, the young apprentice made a silent resolve.
