Chapter 725: Loyal Rochelle
Chapter 725: Loyal Rochelle
Ivan read the memories surfacing in Evers' mind as he spoke.
"Someone told me that you willingly knelt before Voldemort, offering information from Knockturn Alley to gain his forgiveness and avoid punishment, didn't you, Evers?"
"Unfortunately, Voldemort isn't so easily swayed by past betrayals. So, he ordered you to return to my side, gather intelligence, and recruit more Wizards from Knockturn Alley to become Death Eaters..."
"But since you seem to miss the Cruciatus Curse so much, I'll gladly fulfill your wish!"
Ivan's words were sharp, each one like a heavy hammer striking Evers' heart.
Evers, lying limp on the ground, began to tremble uncontrollably. He looked at the young Wizard before him with fear, unable to fathom how the other had uncovered this information, as if he had witnessed the scene firsthand.
Yet, that day, only a few Death Eaters were present, each one deemed trustworthy by the Dark Lord...
"Do you think this was a secret that could be kept from me, Evers? But you might not realize that once a secret is known by a third person, it's no longer a secret..." Ivan sneered.
Evers' face turned pale. He immediately concluded that one of the Death Eaters had betrayed him, revealing his information...
Indeed, if those people were truly loyal to the Dark Lord, they would be locked away in Azkaban, not roaming free...
Ivan saw through Evers' thoughts clearly and had no intention of correcting him.
This misunderstanding was precisely what he had intended, fabricating a non-existent spy to conceal his Legilimency.
After all, no Wizard would willingly have their thoughts read.
If they discovered he was using mind magic to probe everyone's thoughts, even if no one voiced objections, they would all harbor resentment.
Most importantly, without a spell to amplify the power, his Legilimency could only read surface thoughts, leaving room for deception or concealment.
Thus, it was crucial to hide his identity as a Legilimens.
Of course, this approach had its drawbacks.
If any of the Wizards present were captured by Death Eaters and interrogated, revealing this information, Snape, as a spy for the Order of the Phoenix, would face even greater difficulties.
Ivan silently mourned for Snape for a moment before shifting his gaze from Evers to the other Wizards.
"Besides Evers, is there anyone else who wants to speak? Will you come forward on your own, or should I call out your names one by one?" Ivan asked.
After a brief silence, three Wizards, trembling, stood up. To everyone's surprise, one of them was a werewolf.
"Carter, I never thought you would betray us too!" Fenrir, looking at the werewolf Wizard, shouted in anger.
He couldn't understand why someone of the same kind would choose betrayal. Ivan had never mistreated them, offering them trust, stable high-paying jobs, and even developing and improving the Wolfsbane Potion to help them live normal lives.
Carter's act of betrayal was nothing short of ingratitude. If Ivan hadn't intervened, Fenrir would have already lunged to kill him.
Walker and the others also glared at the werewolf Wizards with disdain and anger, fearing that Ivan might now harbor suspicions about them.
Under the sharp, accusatory gazes of the werewolf Wizards, Carter stumbled and fell to his knees, crawling to Ivan like Evers had done, begging for forgiveness.
The other two Wizards angrily pointed at Evers, insisting that they had been misled and had made a mistake in judgment.
Ivan had already returned to his seat, paying no attention to their pleas. He had given them a chance before, but they had failed to cherish it. It was far too late for them to feel regret now.
As Ivan remained silent, the Wizards continued to search for the last traitor. They all firmly believed that Lord Hals wouldn't have removed five chairs without a reason!
Rochelle, standing in the crowd, was visibly anxious. He couldn't be certain if the missing chair referred to him.
Evers had approached him the previous night, and although he had been hesitant and hadn't immediately agreed, he couldn't be sure if Ivan would see it as betrayal.
Rochelle's eyes darted around the room, desperately hoping someone would step forward, which would give him peace of mind.
But after waiting for half a minute, Rochelle's hope was in vain.
As time ticked by, the pressure on Rochelle grew, and he finally steeled himself to speak.
"Lord Hals, Evers met with me last night. He tried to persuade me to join the Dark Lord and become a Death Eater. He promised that if I joined the Dark Lord, they would help me regain control of the Wizarding Market..."
Once he started, Rochelle spilled out the entire story, leaving nothing out. He knew that if Ivan questioned Evers, the truth would come out anyway.
"So, you agreed?" Asia glared at Rochelle, her voice harsh.
Rochelle shook his head frantically, explaining, "No, I didn't. I firmly rejected Evers' offer and warned him to think carefully. Those who betray Lord Hals will have no good end..."
"Don't think you can talk your way out of this, Rochelle!" Evers, who had been lying on the ground, struggled to his feet, glaring at Rochelle with hatred. "You told me you would consider my proposal and give me an answer the next day!"
"That's a lie! I said that to mislead you so I could gather evidence and inform Lord Hals at today's meeting!" Rochelle spoke with righteous indignation, then turned to Ivan, trying to ingratiate himself.
"I just didn't expect that Lord Hals had already seen through you and exposed your true colors first..."
