Chapter 723: Venom Shadow
Chapter 723: Venom Shadow
Chen Chuan examined Mr. Yang's wound and noticed a strange substance surrounding it, hindering its healing. It seemed like some sort of biological toxin.
Before leaving, he had reviewed the Processing Bureau's intelligence regarding the incoming fighters from the Coalition, and he was not entirely ignorant of their backgrounds.
He inquired about the attacker's appearance from Mr. Yang and learned some details.
If the man's words were accurate, based on the available information, the pursuer was likely the Coalition's fighter known as "Venom Shadow."
This individual was rumored to be a top-ranked fighter worldwide.
Mr. Yang earnestly requested his help, and without hesitation, Chen Chuan agreed.
"Mr. Yang, I can assist you with this matter because these people are also my enemies. I came here specifically for them."
Chen Chuan had already planned to raid their camp, and he wouldn't refuse the opportunity to eliminate one of their strong fighters outside the camp.
Furthermore, he was curious about the international rankings and wanted to witness the abilities of these top-ranked fighters firsthand.
Mr. Yang, seeing Chen Chuan's immediate agreement without questioning the difficulty or danger involved, attributed it to his status as a veteran of Grand Harmony. He felt a surge of long-lost passion and a strong desire to do something for Chen Chuan.
Mr. Yang moved forward slightly and asked, "Mr. Chen, are you here to investigate the situation?"
Chen Chuan replied, "I intend to take a look at their established camp over there."
Mr. Yang nodded and said solemnly, "This route might be unfamiliar to you, Mr. Chen, but I've lived here for twenty-five years. I know some shortcuts to avoid trouble and reach the camp quickly. It's also a good spot for observation. After this is over, I'll accompany you there."
Chen Chuan asked, "Mr. Yang, do you need an escort to help those outside leave together?"
Mr. Yang explained, "They've all lived here their entire lives. If there's no pursuit from a strong fighter from the rear, they can navigate the forest without difficulty."
Chen Chuan didn't refuse, as the situation appeared complex. Having a guide familiar with the area would be beneficial.
He examined Mr. Yang's wound again and took out a small bottle of medicine from his pocket, offering it to him. "Try this."
Mr. Yang accepted without hesitation. He uncorked the bottle, examined its contents, and said sentimentally, "It's the same as before." He skillfully removed the stopper and applied some of the medicine to the external wound. Then, with his fingers, he dabbed more medicine onto the wound, reaching deep inside without flinching.
After a while, the strange substance hindering the wound's healing was suppressed. The altered tissue around the wound seemed to come back to life, gradually repairing itself.
Feeling the medicine's effect, Mr. Yang showed his delight. He then expressed his gratitude to Chen Chuan, "Mr. Chen, thank you for the medicine!"
Chen Chuan replied, "Mr. Yang, your words are too kind. Given your status, we can consider ourselves comrades, and this is nothing."
"Comrades?"
Mr. Yang nodded, extending his hand. "Yang Yongcheng, a soldier who left the army twenty-five years ago."
Chen Chuan shook his hand, introducing himself, "Chen Chuan, Investigation Director of the Processing Bureau."
"Investigation Director?"
Yang Yongcheng was taken aback. He hadn't expected an investigation director to be here; in the military, this would be a high-ranking officer, unlikely to be on the front lines, let alone in such a remote location.
However, it had been twenty-five years since he left the Defense Department, and his past experience might not apply to the current situation, so he didn't inquire further.
After a glance outside, he checked his old-fashioned mechanical wristwatch. It was already noon, the time when the attacker usually struck, according to his information. "Mr. Director, we should prepare," he said sternly.
Chen Chuan acknowledged with a sound of agreement. "The person is already here."
Yang Yongcheng's expression tightened at these words, and the next moment, the tent's curtain flew up, and Chen Chuan, who had been sitting there, suddenly disappeared.
A loud explosion-like blast reverberated from outside, causing the tent to tremble.
Yang Yongcheng immediately grabbed his bone weapon and rushed out. Outside, he heard continuous thunderous sounds, sometimes close by and then seemingly far away, each one painfully loud.
The commotion didn't last long, and the final sound seemed to come from the forest they had passed through. He immediately headed in that direction.
After traveling about five or six hundred meters, he saw Chen Chuan standing there with his sword, its sheath still on. Only his empty fist emitted faint wisps of energy.
Lying there was a figure in a conical mask and black protective uniform. His chest had a sunken area that resembled a vortex, and his body and limbs appeared twisted in the direction of the vortex.
He suddenly felt his breathing become heavy as he slowly approached the figure on the ground, noticing the person was holding a pitch-black, long-spiked weapon. However, this weapon was also twisted by an unknown force.
With his keen eyesight, he could discern that the person was attempting to use a transformed weapon to resist the power, but it proved futile. The force penetrated both the person and the weapon.
Chen Chuan asked, "Senior Yang, is it him?"
Yang Yongcheng nodded, "Yes, it's him."
Looking at the half-dead person lying on the ground, his emotions were mixed. He never imagined that this opponent, who seemed so formidable and invincible in his eyes, would be so easily defeated by Chen Chuan. He suddenly felt old, as if he had become detached from his era.
Chen Chuan approached this internationally renowned fighter with utmost seriousness. However, after the fight, he felt the opponent had some skill; as a squad leader, it was more than sufficient, and even as an investigation director, it would be enough. But that was as far as it went.
Only after reaching a certain level, every bit of improvement in strength becomes extremely challenging. Therefore, he couldn't underestimate those who were ranked higher in the intelligence reports. Their true abilities were yet to be determined, and a fight was necessary to find out.
Yang Yongcheng squatted down and reached out with his gloved hand to examine the body. He discovered that the person's bones and muscles below the neck had been twisted and mangled by some force. Once again, he was secretly amazed.
He said, "Director Chen, do you want to extract some intelligence from him?"
Chen Chuan replied, "Yes, but it seems he's not willing to cooperate."
Yang Yongcheng immediately said, "If Director Chen trusts us, we can help."
On the 16th of September, in the year 1991, a book was published that contained no errors!
Chen Chuan had no choice but to agree. Interrogation was not his forte, but if Yang Yongcheng could extract information, that would be best. If not, it wouldn't be a big hindrance.
Yang Yongcheng immediately took out a rope and tightly bound the person below him. Then, he hoisted the body onto his shoulder and returned to the camp with Chen Chuan.
He first delivered the Venom Shadow to a tent and then turned back to Chen Chuan, saying, "Director Chen, the interrogation will take some time, and it might rain several times today. It's not suitable to go to the coalition camp. Why don't we rest here today, and tomorrow morning, I'll personally take you to the garrison camp."
Chen Chuan agreed, "Alright."
At that moment, Yang Yongcheng reached into the pocket of his windbreaker and took out a palm-sized object wrapped in thick cloth. He handed it to Chen Chuan, saying, "Director Chen, please accept this."
Chen Chuan didn't immediately reach out to take it but asked, "What is this?"
Yang Yongcheng sighed and said, "This is the relic I found back then."
Chen Chuan was surprised, "Oh? Didn't your teammates bring this back?"
Yang Yongcheng shook his head, "On our journey, we were continuously attacked by powerful creatures. We suspected it was because we carried this relic, so I left it behind when I was the rear guard."
"According to our analysis, this is likely just a fifth-rank relic, and at most, it won't exceed the fourth rank. Its value might not be that great; otherwise, the creatures we attracted would have been more formidable."
"I've kept this object with me all these years, but I couldn't figure anything out from it. Director Chen, I'd like to entrust this to you. Whether you keep it or bring it back to the Defense Department is up to you. However, this is not our compensation. The items we promised will be delivered to you later."
Chen Chuan didn't care much about the reward, but he didn't refuse the object. He reached out and took it.
"Then I'll take it."
Yang Yongcheng saw that he had taken it, and it seemed like a huge burden had been lifted from him, making him feel much more relaxed.
He asked if Chen Chuan needed a tent, but Chen Chuan declined, so Yang Yongcheng didn't insist. He knew that Chen Chuan must have his own arrangements for the night.
Since they decided to stay, Chen Chuan went to prepare a tent in a corner of the camp, keeping some distance from the others.
The entire camp was surrounded by campfire pits, so there was no need to worry about any issues. He didn't have to light a campfire himself.
With ample time on this occasion, he made the pit more spacious. After finishing all the arrangements, he noticed the rain starting to fall again, so he informed Yang Yongcheng that he wanted to cultivate and asked them not to disturb him.
Then he returned to the tent. Sitting down, he picked up the Snow Lady Sword and lightly swung it, creating a luminous rift. He was about to begin his cultivation for the day, but at that moment, he felt something in his pocket start to vibrate slightly.
