Chapter 72: Water Root Grass
Chapter 72: Water Root Grass
As Rain continued reading, he realized that his initial guess was indeed incorrect.
He came across another entry that read:
"Dog Enhancement: To further break the shackles of a dog's potential and increase the chances of entering a feral state, consider a daily nutrient-rich meal as a base, supplemented monthly with 2 fluid ounces of Mutagenic Growth Potion."
"However, this unstable potion may cause unpredictable changes in the dog. Exercise caution during administration, and discontinue use if any adverse effects are observed."
"Mutagenic Growth Potion Recipe: 1 ounce of Golden Marigold, 1 pair of Nocturnal Vampire Bat wings, and 2 Carrion Wolf claws."
Upon reading this, Rain couldn't help but ponder, connecting it to Cole's previous writings. He quickly formed a rough guess about the Hyena Queen's situation in his mind.
Cole must have accidentally cultivated the Hyena Queen, 'Maria,' using that single bottle of Mutagenic Growth Potion.
But as the book suggested, the Hyena Queen not only became more robust and taller but also underwent a mutation.
The mutation, however, took an uncommon direction—a rare reproductive mutation.
Rain couldn't help but shake his head.
As he flipped through the pages, Rain discovered various breeding methods for different animals.
Many of these methods required the use of potions, and not only were these potions unfamiliar to Rain, but the descriptions of their preparation processes often included passages written in an unknown language.
"Is it to keep it secret, or is it a spell that needs to be chanted during the preparation process?" Rain wondered, deep in thought.
He gently set the book down.
Rain had a nagging feeling that this book was not as simple as it seemed.
Why would someone use such a lavishly decorated diary? The cover was made of silver and adorned with noble sapphires, rubies, and turquoise, which was a bit hard for Rain to comprehend.
Shaking his head, Rain decided to put this thought aside for the moment.
Setting the book aside, Rain picked up the wooden amulet encased in a wooden box and examined it.
After studying it for a while, Rain could only discern that the animals and plants carved on both sides of the amulet were incredibly lifelike. Still, he couldn't decipher anything else.
However, he understood that if 'Dog King' Cole had placed the amulet in the wooden box alongside the book, it must be of significant value.
Perhaps it was as precious as the book.
A sudden realization flashed through Rain's mind.
"Could the book and the amulet belong to the same owner?"
This thought immediately brightened Rain's eyes.
If this were the case, it would easily explain why 'Dog King' Cole had kept the two items together.
Furthermore, both the illustration on the book's silver cover and the patterns on the amulet could be summarized with the word 'nature.'
Rain stroked his chin, nodding from time to time as he delved deeper into his thoughts, feeling that he had grasped the essence of something.
However, understanding and comprehending were two different matters.
In the end, Rain could only tuck the amulet back into the 'Beast Tamer's Journal' and carefully store it away.
Afterward, Rain paced the room with his hands clasped across his chest, deep in contemplation.
"I can understand the dog breeding methods in the earlier parts of the 'Beast Tamer's Journal,' and the materials mentioned should be purchasable. I could try following some of the recipes and formulas."
"Perhaps this might trigger the Beast Tamer profession panel."
"The dog issue is easier to solve. During the last servant training session, I could have taken home a Lurcher puppy. I didn't claim it because I wasn't being assessed as a dog trainer, and it would have cost three silver coins to adopt one.

"Later, I can head to the manor myself to take care of the dogs. That leaves the recipes and potion formulas. For a start, I can begin with some simple recipes."
"However, the unknown script on the potion formulas is quite bothersome. I'll have to figure out where I can learn about it. Since Cole mentioned that even ordinary scholars wouldn't know it, this script must be uncommon."
"But this can wait for now."
"As for the nutrient meal formula: 2 fluid ounces of Water Root Grass, 2 eggs, half a pint of milk, and 20 ounces of pork or chicken."
"It seems I haven't heard much about Water Root Grass. I should visit an alchemy shop first."
"Alright, I'll head to the alchemy shop to check if they have Water Root Grass for sale. If they do, I'll purchase the ingredients first, then go and collect the dogs."
Rain quickly organized his thoughts and was about to head out to Aber Alchemy Shop.
Besides selling finished potions, Aber Alchemy Shop also offered a variety of herbs and raw materials.
If Water Root Grass was available in town, this shop would be the most likely place to find it.
Soon, Rain arrived at the shop and saw Molly tending the store again. Upon seeing Rain enter, she greeted him with a smile.
"Rain, are you here to see Aber again today?"
"No, Molly, please tell Aber that I'm very grateful for his help last time. I'm here to inquire if you have Water Root Grass for sale."
"Water Root Grass? Let me check." Molly seemed unsure if they had this herb and immediately turned to examine the shelves with the medicinal ingredients.
"We
"We do. How many do you need, Rain?"
"I'll take three, please!"
"Three? That's not cheap. They're priced at five silver coins each, so three would cost fifteen silver coins in total! I wonder what Aber was thinking, charging so much for this herb."
Molly picked up a light yellow herb and examined it, occasionally grumbling about Aber.
"Fifteen silver coins?" Rain couldn't help but be taken aback.
"Yes, and here's the fifteen silver coins." Rain handed over the coins but smiled without directly answering Molly's question.
After receiving the three Water Root Grasses, Rain quickly left the shop.
Water Root Grass resembled a carrot, with a light yellow skin and a more developed root system. It was smaller than a carrot and had more delicate roots.
Rain exited the alchemy shop and visited other stores, quickly gathering the remaining ingredients.
When Rain returned home, his parents were still not back.
However, Anna and Mint immediately noticed what he was carrying.
"Wow, brother, why did you buy so many vegetables today?"
"That's great! We can have so many delicious dishes tonight!"
"Um, Mint, haha, yes!" Rain, seeing his sister's joy, couldn't bring himself to reveal the real reason."
How can I say that I'm trying to make dog food?"
There's no rush.
These everyday ingredients can be purchased anytime.
Making my sister happy is more important.
Just then, a familiar voice called out from outside.
"Rain, are you home?" George shouted from the doorway.
"Yes, George, come in!" Rain opened the door with a smile.
"Wow, Rain, you've grown so much!" George, his best friend, gestured to Rain's height, expressing his surprise.
