Chapter 72: If She Doesn't Stir Up Trouble, She's Not Jiang Xia!
Chapter 72: If She Doesn't Stir Up Trouble, She's Not Jiang Xia!
Wen Wan was stunned by Jiang Xia's sudden slap, but she quickly recovered and raised her hand to strike back.
Jiang Xia grabbed her wrist and twisted it instinctively.
"Ah~!"
A loud scream echoed through the commune, drawing everyone's attention.
People rushed out to see what was happening.
Jiang Xia had dislocated Wen Wan's wrist and let go of her hand.
This dislocation technique was something Jiang Xia had learned from a local doctor in her past life. It had proven effective against harassers during her late-night shifts.
Wen Wan's hand hung limply, beads of cold sweat forming on her forehead.
Seeing the situation, the commune members pointed at Jiang Xia and demanded, "What are you doing? Why did you hit her?!"
"What are you doing? Why did you hit her?!"
"Who are you? Why did you hit her? You think you're the toughest, huh?"
...
Wen Wan, in pain, tears streaming down her face, clutched her dislocated wrist and said coldly, "Sister Jiang Xia, I don't know what I did to offend you. You slapped me and dislocated my wrist!"
Jiang Xia took out the letter and addressed the crowd, "Wen Wan forged my handwriting and wrote a fake letter. I couldn't control my anger, so I hit her."
Wen Wan's eyes flickered. She had anticipated that Jiang Xia would know, but she wasn't afraid. Without evidence, Jiang Xia was powerless. She gritted her teeth and said, "Sister Jiang Xia, I don't know what you're talking about. Someone gave me this letter to pass on to you. I didn't even read its contents. What do you mean by forging your handwriting? I have no idea what you're talking about!"
The commune leader was confused by Jiang Xia's words. Forged letters? Even the radio dramas didn't dare to make up such stories!
"Is there some misunderstanding? Why would Comrade Wen Wan forge your handwriting?"
The other commune members chimed in, "Yeah! Why would she forge your handwriting for no reason?"
Jiang Xia replied, "That's for her to answer. The letter in my hand is a slanderous message against me. I don't know if Comrade Wen Wan has forged other letters in my handwriting, which is why I came to the commune to ask everyone to investigate."
"You all know my husband is Zhou Chenglei. What was Zhou Chenglei's status before? If Wen Wan forged a letter in my handwriting to my husband in the military to gather information, what would be the consequences?"
"Or if she forged a letter to my father or mother to gather information or ask for something, what would the consequences of such a casual letter be?"
"Spies are quite common these days, aren't they? Isn't it terrifying to think about?"
Jiang Xia believed that someone in the commune knew about her parents' status.
She had no evidence to prove that Wen Wan had forged the letter. If she went to Wen Wan's house to search for evidence, she would have no justification.
But that was fine. There were plenty of places where justice could be sought!
So she came to the commune.
If she didn't stir up trouble today and turn the tables, she wouldn't be Jiang Xia!
Sure enough, the commune leader's expression turned serious.
Jiang Xia's father held a high position in the city's administration, and her mother was the factory manager of a clothing factory.
Jiang Xia's words were not unfounded. If Wen Wan had forged a letter in her handwriting to ask for something, she could have gained significant benefits.
And there was Zhou Chenglei's former status to consider.
The commune leader was increasingly terrified by the implications!
And the more he thought about it, the more anxious he became!
"What letter? Let me see. Comrade Jiang Xia, are you sure it was Comrade Wen Wan who forged your handwriting?"
Wen Wan looked at Jiang Xia in disbelief. What was she talking about? She might as well say she had forged her handwriting to leak state secrets!
Jiang Xia handed the letter to the commune leader. "I came to the commune because I wasn't sure. But this letter was given to my mother-in-law by Comrade Wen Wan in front of many villagers."
"This letter claims it was written to a male classmate, but I absolutely never wrote anything like this. Yet, the handwriting is mine! The more I think about it, the more frightened I become."
"The handwriting in this letter is identical to mine. I’m worried there might be other letters. After all, this letter only accuses me of having an affair with another man, which only damages my personal reputation. But I’m afraid Wen Wan might have written other letters that could harm the collective, the country, or even national security! Captain, I think we should go to Wen Wan’s house and see if she has any other letters hidden there."
Wen Wan’s face turned pale with rage. How dare she! This was a blatant attempt to drive her to the brink of destruction. How vicious!
"Jiang Xia, how can you make such baseless accusations? I’m a law-abiding citizen. Why would I do something like that? Captain, I didn’t do it!"
Wen Wan never imagined that Jiang Xia would bring up her parents and Zhou Chenglei’s past. Wasn’t this just using background to pressure her?
It was pure bullying! No wonder her father was sent to prison in the previous life because of her.
Her entire family was ruined because of her.
Jiang Xia was truly a menace.
But now, before she could cause any real harm, Wen Wan found herself already trapped by Jiang Xia.
The production team captain furrowed his brow as he read the letter. This letter indeed didn’t mention anything that could harm the collective; it only damaged personal reputation.
However, Jiang Xia was right. "Comrade Wen Wan, did you really write this letter?"
What? The captain actually believed her? Wen Wan was almost at the point of tears, her heart aching more than her dislocated hand. "Captain, I didn’t! Jiang Xia is making it all up! She’s framing me! Why would I try to mimic her handwriting? I don’t even have a sample of her handwriting to copy! I received this letter in the city yesterday. Someone asked me to pass it on to her, and I know nothing else."
Jiang Xia looked at Wen Wan with surprise. "Comrade Wen Wan, we have no past grievances. Why would I frame you? I would need a motive, a reason, or some conflict of interest, wouldn’t I? Do we have any of those?"
Wen Wan: "..." Of course, you stole my man, but how could I say that?
Jiang Xia continued, "I didn’t say for sure that you wrote it, but this letter was delivered to my mother-in-law by you. I just noticed that the handwriting is a copy of mine. I only brought it up because it’s a serious matter that could affect the safety of the collective. Everyone has a responsibility to be vigilant. If it’s not you, just cooperate with the investigation. The innocent have nothing to fear!"
Jiang Xia then turned to the others in the production team. "What do you all think? If she’s innocent, we can clear her name, right? And if I’ve wronged Comrade Wen Wan, I’ll make a public apology once the investigation is complete!"
The others in the production team agreed that the matter should be investigated. Even though they were now liberated, no one knew if there were still spies or agents around.
The captain nodded. "Comrade Jiang Xia’s concerns are valid. We can’t be complacent about such matters. We must be cautious. Comrade Wen Wan, please cooperate with the investigation. We need to check your home to see if there are any other letters that mimic Comrade Jiang Xia’s or anyone else’s handwriting!"
Wen Wan was almost at her wits’ end. She could see that Jiang Xia was determined to blow this out of proportion, to the point where she would lose all face in the production team. Everyone would suspect her of being a spy, and only then would they feel at ease!
Wen Wan realized that Jiang Xia wanted her to face public criticism.
She even wanted her to be arrested!
Today’s second update, with one more at around ten. I’ll need to check and revise it.
