Chapter 72: Departing Ways
Chapter 72: Departing Ways
Contrary to his imagination, the scene before them was not one of towering skyscrapers in a modern metropolis.
Instead, they were surrounded by old-style residential buildings, none taller than ten stories, a clear sign of their age.
The streets were lined with numerous shops, teahouses, inns, and pawnshops. Various vendors could be seen and heard shouting their wares.
The streets were bustling with people and vehicles, creating a cacophony of sounds.
Jiang Cheng had a strange feeling, as if he had traveled back to the 1990s before his time-travel.
However, Chen Sao and the others in the car were already stunned.
As someone who grew up in the slums, even if this was just a dream, they had never seen such a scene, nor had they ever seen so many people and vehicles.
"This isn't even the busiest place here."
Bai Wei spoke up, "Do you see those tallest buildings? Those streets over there are the liveliest in the outer city, with all sorts of things."
The group looked in that direction.
The buildings there were at least two or three times taller than the ones around them.
Lin Yue was left in awe.
If this place was so bustling and lively, how much more bustling could that place be?
Chen Sao's eyes widened, but she soon withdrew her gaze.
After all, they were only here to hide out temporarily, not to settle down. Why worry about such things?
Moreover, this was the inner city, and the cost of living was definitely not low, let alone that place.
Jiang Cheng's heart wasn't particularly stirred.
He felt that those places should be similar to the commercial streets he knew before his time-travel, but for Chen Sao and the others, it was their first time seeing such a place, while for him, it had become commonplace.
Besides, now wasn't the time to be thinking about such things.
The car turned off the main road and entered a two-lane street, instantly making the street much quieter. Some pedestrians passing by had a worried look on their faces.
"It seems like the people in the outer city don't necessarily have it as good as we thought."
Jiang Cheng thought to himself.
Occasionally, they could see uniformed guards passing by, indicating that security was definitely better than in the slums.
After a few minutes, the vehicle entered an old-style residential complex and stopped in front of a building in the northeast corner.
"This is it."
Bai Wei unbuckled her seatbelt and smiled, "Come in."
The three of them unbuckled their seatbelts, got out of the car, and Jiang Cheng opened the door for Chen Sao, who was sitting in the back seat.
The three of them got out of the car and looked up at the six-story building, feeling a bit lost.
Was this the place they were going to stay next?
The group carried their luggage and went up to the third floor, arriving at the left-hand apartment.
Bai Wei took out a key and opened the door.
Jiang Cheng's eyes lit up.
Although the building looked a bit old, the interior was quite nice. The living room had a sofa, a TV, and tiled flooring.
"It's been a long time since we've lived here. It seems to have a bit of a homely feel."
Bai Wei turned around and smiled at the others.
"Come in."
The three of them looked at Jiang Cheng, their eyes showing some apprehension.
When had they ever seen such a nice house that they dared not enter, afraid of dirtying the floor?
"Come on, Grandma, Chen Sao."
He smiled and took the elderly woman's hand, secretly vowing in his heart that one day, he would also let his family live in such a house.
The group entered the apartment, and under Bai Wei's lead, they toured the entire place.
Besides the living room, there were two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, all fully equipped.
"There's a vegetable market just outside the complex, along with other shops. After this, you can go shopping there. The prices are even cheaper than in the slums."
Bai Wei looked at Chen Sao and spoke, "Thank you! Thank you! We..." Chen Sao was so nervous that she couldn't speak properly.
"It's fine."
Bai Wei waved her hand, "This was agreed upon with Jiang Cheng, and this house is usually empty anyway. It's no problem if you stay here for a while; it'll even bring some liveliness. Oh, and here's my phone number. If anything happens, just pay someone to help and call this number." She handed Chen Sao her business card and the keys.
"Young lady, you've been too kind to us. We don't know how to repay you." The elder was so moved that tears streamed down his face.
"It's fine."
Bai Wei smiled and looked at Jiang Cheng beside her, "Are you sure you don't want to stay here?"
Jiang Cheng shook his head.
"Alright, then you two chat. I'll wait in the car. If there's any issue, you can ask me later." Bai Wei finished speaking and smiled at the elder before walking out.
"Xiao Cheng, that young lady is a good person." The elder sighed, "Such a nice house, and she's letting us stay if we want to."
"Senior Sister Bai is indeed a good person."
Jiang Cheng's gaze swept over the three of them, "Grandma, Chen Sao, Xiao Yue, for the next period, you'll stay here first. Remember the location of the house, don't get lost, and don't run around. Once the Wild Wolf Gang leaves, I'll come and get you."
The three of them nodded continuously.
"Xiao Cheng, are you really going back? Why not stay together? Won't it be fine to wait out this period?" Chen Sao's eyes were filled with worry.
"Yes, Jiang Cheng, why don't you stay too? I see there are two rooms here; there's enough space." Lin Yue also advised.
Jiang Cheng smiled at her.
"I already said, I have the premium membership card for the Martial Arts Academy. Nothing will happen."
As he spoke, Jiang Cheng suddenly thought of something and looked at Chen Sao, "Chen Sao, how about this? I'll take you out to buy some things and also help you get familiar with the surroundings."
"Okay."
Chen Sao quickly agreed.
She was also concerned. Once Jiang Cheng left with that person, she'd be completely blind without him.
"Grandma, Xiao Yue, you two wait at home. Unless it's us knocking, don't open the door for anyone else."
"Mhm, don't worry, Jiang Cheng. I understand." Lin Yue nodded vigorously.
Having lived in the slum area for a long time, she still had her guard up.
Jiang Cheng brought Chen Sao downstairs, informed Bai Wei, who readily agreed. He directly came out of the car and walked while introducing the surroundings to Chen Sao.
Chen Sao listened attentively, nodding from time to time.
After spending over half an hour, they bought basic living supplies. It was time to part ways.
Jiang Cheng stood outside, looking at the three inside the room, and his eyes also turned red.
"Chen Sao, I'll be counting on you to take care of Grandma for this period."
"Jiang Cheng, what are you saying? Even if you don't say it, Sister-in-law will take good care of Grandma for you."
"Jiang Cheng, rest assured. We'll definitely take good care of Grandma."
"Mhm, Grandma, I'm leaving."
Jiang Cheng smiled and waved.
"Xiao Cheng, be careful on your way back! Don't get into fights. If it's really bad, you know to eat something, right?" The elder's tears flowed.
"I understand."
Jiang Cheng slowly closed the door and sniffed.
"You're really going back?"
Bai Wei stood to the side, and her eyes also turned a bit red.
"Mhm."
Jiang Cheng nodded without hesitation.
With his family settled, he could finally relax a bit.
