Chapter 711: Secrets of the River of History
Chapter 711: Secrets of the River of History
According to their analysis, Ryan and the others believed that the ancient Laputians must have accidentally discovered the method to create Flight Stone Crystals. They then built a flourishing civilization based on these Flight Stone Crystals.
However, due to their technological limitations, numerous problems arose after the Sky City was established. Eventually, the Laputians had no choice but to abandon the Sky City and return to living on the ground.
One of the most critical issues was the Magic Radiation problem. As Liam had previously analyzed, the ancient Laputians had a very low efficiency in utilizing the energy from levitation stone crystals. As a result, a significant amount of Magna Magic was released into the surrounding environment.
This high-intensity Magic energy was harmful to the Laputians, who could not control Magic. People living in the Sky City would develop malignant mutations if they stayed there for too long. This was especially true for the next generation born in the Sky City, who were exposed to higher levels of radiation and suffered increasingly severe mutations.
In the end, unable to solve these problems, the Laputians had to abandon their Sky City and return it to the ground. They also deliberately sealed all the technology related to the Sky City and Flight Stone Crystals to prevent future generations from repeating their mistakes.
However, much like the thriving life around Chernobyl, this radiation, while harmful to humans, did not harm plants. In fact, it promoted the evolution of plants. The upper layer of the Sky City, with its primeval forest-like mini ecosystem and the massive tree, clearly demonstrated this.
Additionally, after the tree's roots enveloped the Flight Stone Crystal, a portion of the energy, filtered by the tree, reached the upper layer of Sky City Laputa, nourishing the growth of all living things. This is the primary reason the upper layer's small and imperfect ecosystem was able to sustain itself for 700 years.
After Liam shared his analysis with everyone, the entire control room fell silent. It took several minutes before Hilda snapped out of her shock.
"Now I understand why Laputa fell", Hilda said with a sigh. "In my hometown, the valley of Kandia, there has been an ancient ballad for 700 years. The lyrics go like this: 'Roots must be grounded in the soil, live with the wind, endure winter with the bamboo, and sing of spring with the birds.' I believe this is our ancestors' warning to future generations."
"You're right", Liam said, gently patting a tree root thicker than himself. "The high-intensity Magna Magic does indeed harm nearby people, but after being filtered by this tree, it not only doesn't harm the surrounding life but also promotes their benign evolution."
"Yes, that's exactly it", Hermione nodded, adding, "I discovered a secret within the special energy circulation formed by the massive Flight Stone Crystal and the tree using my methods. If they had adopted a plant-filtering solution from the beginning, 700 years would have been enough time for your generations to evolve and eventually master the power of Magic."
As she said this, Hermione thought about the difference between Wizards and Muggles in her homeland. She now had enough evidence to prove that Wizards and many magical creatures' ancestors lived in environments stimulated by Magic power, which led to their evolution into beings capable of using Magic and passing this ability down through their genes.
Hermione even suspected that the ancestors of Goblins, Giants, or Veelas were also humans, but they had been exposed to different types of Magic radiation, which altered their physical forms. This would explain why, despite their significant physical differences from humans, they do not have reproductive barriers with humans.
Of course, these important research topics are better left for when we have more free time. Right now, they need to find a way to hide this Sky City.
"At least Laputa's own power can't hide this city", Liam and Hermione said with a helpless look after working for five or six hours, as the time crept into the evening. They were speaking to the two little ones who were almost asleep, leaning against each other.
"Didn't we see a huge storm surrounding this Sky City when we arrived?" Baru asked, puzzled. "Can't we just summon that storm again?"
"If it were that simple", Liam replied, sounding frustrated. "You have to understand that creating a storm in a calm sky and maintaining it require very different amounts of energy and effort. Moreover, because many systems in Sky City have been damaged, once we restart the storm, we won't be able to control its size or direction. If it heads towards the mainland—"
"You're right", Hilda nodded. "Even if all the traps along our path were functioning normally, the fact that those massive tree roots could reach this supposedly sealed dimension suggests that Sky City has changed a lot since 700 years ago. I believe many things that we can't see are likely not working as they should."
"Earlier, we found that the entire weapons system of Sky City is operational. As a core Sky City of the ancient civilization, Laputa's purely military systems are in much better condition than the others. For example, we can use this city to fire Devastating Lightning or control nearly ten thousand War Robots to sweep everything around us", Hermione said, spreading her hands. "But that's meaningless to us. To a flying battleship, destroying it would only require our spaceship. More firepower won't help us now."
"So what do we do now?" Baru asked, squatting down and scratching his head in frustration. "We don't have enough time to hide this Sky City with magic, and its own power isn't enough to hide it as it did in the past."
"Liam, Hermione", Hilda suddenly stood up and looked at Ryan and the others. "Didn't you say you have your own countries in other worlds?"
"That's right", Liam nodded. "To be precise, we have our own countries in several worlds. However, all of them are far from peaceful, always facing various wars—"
After that, Liam and Hermione took turns to briefly introduce a few of the worlds, concluding with: "So we search for information in various places, hoping to gain enough technology to defeat our enemies and provide a better life for those who believe in and follow us."
"Is that so!" Hilda nodded, then said something surprising. "Then could you take this Sky City to your worlds?"
"What?" Baru turned to Hilda, surprised. "Why would we do that?"
"It's simple", Hilda explained to everyone. "Firstly, we can't hide Laputa right now. If this flying city falls into the hands of the Ambitionists, our worlds will be filled with blood and flames, and peace will be lost forever."
"Secondly, even if we hide Laputa this time, with the advancement of flight technology, I believe it will eventually be discovered. The only way to ensure its safety is to hide it in another world."
"Alright, I think we can take this Sky City to another world. But what about you guys?" Liam asked, now worried. "After all, your identities have been exposed. Unless you can hide in a place where no one can find you, the Ambitionists will keep hunting you."
