Chapter 709: Unlike Old Man, Only Capable of Breaking Your Heart
Chapter 709: Unlike Old Man, Only Capable of Breaking Your Heart
"Enough with the jokes!"
Kuro nearly roared, "Me drawing attention? What kind of attention? You want me to retire peacefully while you bury me alive?!"
"Never! All of this was Sakazuki's idea, you know. Old Man was strongly against it."
Lucius Kro chuckled, "You know Sakazuki's temperament—he doesn't take no for an answer. Unlike Old Man, who's only capable of breaking your heart, he at least considers your feelings."
What's with that smug tea-brewing tone of yours?
"Enough! Just tell me—if there's still room for negotiation? This burden's too heavy for me to carry", Kuro demanded.
"It's not as complicated as you think, Kuro."
Lucius Kro said, "This is just a newspaper. Its main targets are remnants from Roger's era. Those already established in the New World or retired pirates won't specifically come after you.
After filtering, only pirates who escaped from the sixth level and want to make a comeback remain. To announce their return, tracking you down becomes their best choice. Other pirates won't care about this at all."
"Only?"
You know how many escaped from the sixth level—you've got the gall to say 'only'?
Kuro's expression darkened to the point of dripping water.
Lucius Kro continued, "Though these pirates are scattered everywhere, we can't gather intelligence on all of them. But concentrating forces at a single point makes them easy to crush. Besides, you control the gateway to chaos—whether to let them through is entirely your decision."
That much was true. G-3's position was uniquely crucial—the frontline of frontlines. From here, any route choice determined which dangerous pirates got released into the current volatile New World situation, triggering another wave of destruction.
Put simply, he'd become the 'Gatekeeper' again.
Before, Shabondy was the Gatekeeper, blocking young pirates from advancing. Now, he'd become the Gatekeeper blocking Old Men from passing.
Kuro asked stubbornly, "No other options?"
"There is one—Old Man retires, and you take over."
"Goodbye!"
Crash! Kuro slammed the receiver onto the Transponder Snail, ending the call with the clatter.
"What a joke!" he muttered, turning to the window. "Have they captured the people yet?"
Klah adjusted his glasses, "We're searching. We've also sent people to recover our comrades' bodies."
"Good. Bring them back intact—we can't let their sacrifice be in vain", Kuro nodded.
"Vice Admiral Kuro, then how should we write the report?" Klah asked.
Kuro glared, "Have you gone stupid? Write it normally! Showcase the full Navy vs pirate confrontation. Downplay my role, emphasize everyone else's contributions—especially those who died. After writing reports this long, you still need me to teach you?!"
Jokes aside, the report must be handled properly. Kuro owed it to those who died.
Otherwise, what would they become—casualties of a maritime disaster?!
Though Kuro never sought fame, he wouldn't stoop to denying his comrades' merits like some conscienceless wretch!
"Understood, Vice Admiral Kuro." Klah saluted.
"Found it."
Lida spoke up, pulling a green Devil Fruit from her bag with a grimace, "Another snack gone to waste!"
Kuro glanced over, "In stock? Looks like a Paramecia."
He'd grown accustomed to Lida's deliveries.
Five Devil Fruit users died around her this time—given her shoulder bag's nature, a new fruit was inevitable.
Though the mechanics were unclear, it was always a bonus. Kuro never lost out.
The only exception was that bewildered Paramecia obtained last time—it still gnawed at him.
No idea where that Devil Fruit came from.
"Boroboroboro."
The Transponder Snail rang again—but not the office desk one.
Klah pulled out a Transponder Snail from his coat, answering, "Hello, this is Commander Klah."
"Commander Klah, we've captured the fishmen."
A Navy officer's voice came through, faintly amidst background noise.
Klah looked to Kuro. Kuro narrowed his eyes, "Let's go see."
The group rose, heading down to the lower deck.
The deck below swarmed with Navy personnel surrounding twenty bound, kneeling fishmen glaring defiantly.
"Hey! Release us now!"
One captured fishman shouted arrogantly, "You contemptible humans! We're fishmen—we're a superior race!"
Crack!
Sazil rolled up his sleeve and punched the fishman square in the face, sending him sprawling.
"Who the hell told you fishmen are superior?!" Sazil growled. "You're just a lowly fish swimming in the sea—dare you even pierce our ship?!"
"You humans should feel honored being sunk by us!" another fishman struggled to rise, but Navy rifles quickly aimed at him.
"Just shoot already! Kill me if you dare!" the fishman roared.
Whoosh!
Suddenly, a compressed air bullet launched from the crowd, piercing the fishman's temple, splattering blood. His eyes widened in shock before collapsing.
"Everyone here has that capability."
A calm voice cut through the chaos.
All turned to see Kuro lazily pointing a single finger, strolling forward.
Fishman Karate.
"Vice Admiral Kuro!"
Sazil and others saluted sharply.
"Karen!"
The fishmen glared at their fallen comrade, hatred burning toward Kuro. One struggled against ropes, lunging forward—only for Klah to point a finger, declaring:
"Fishman Karate."
Bang!
A neat hole appeared between the fishman's eyebrows, blood trailing as he toppled backward.
Silence gripped the fishmen.
"You dare massacre us? The World Government won't allow this! We're participating in this World Meeting—don't you fear starting a conflict?!" a fishman gritted his teeth.
"Oh-ho! You know about the World Meeting?"
Kuro raised an eyebrow mockingly, "So you've recently left Fishman Island then."
His gaze fixed on the fishman's chest—two tattoos marked him. One resembled a shark, the other a circle containing a body with a severed head.
"Jinbei, what's going on? At this critical moment, you still dare release fishmen as pirates? Worse—you pierced Old Man's subordinate's ship, costing me several subordinates. Well done, fishmen."
Kuro approached, cigar clenched between his teeth, looking down coldly, "Now... how should I deal with you lot?"
