Chapter 709: Mira's Overconfidence
Chapter 709: Mira's Overconfidence
Mira descended the stairs, holding the Beast King extermination quest in her hand, and made her way to find Makarov.
Makarov took the quest details from Mira and gave it a glance, his expression turning solemn. "Mira, this task might be a bit too challenging for you at this stage. I..."
"Alright, Master! I'm off!"
Mira interrupted Makarov, snatching the quest details back and dashing out of the guild.
Makarov stood up and called after her retreating figure, "Hey! Mira, wait!"
Watching Mira disappear without a glance back, Makarov heaved a sigh. In his opinion, Mira, who had just advanced to the S-class, might have taken on more than she could handle with this quest.
If it were Laxus or Mystogan, there wouldn't be an issue. Even Erza might be able to manage, but he feared that Mira would find herself in danger.
"Don't worry, Master," came Feng Ye's voice from the side.
Makarov turned to see Feng Ye descending the stairs from the second floor. He walked up to the bar and ordered a glass of juice before turning his gaze toward the direction Mira had left in.
Feng Ye offered a faint smile. "I thought that Mira lacked the maturity to advance to the S-class last year, and while she's still a bit lacking this year, I'm surprised you let her pass. I believe she needs to go through some trials to truly grow."
"I understand what you're saying, but..." Makarov's expression remained grave. He knew what Feng Ye meant, but he couldn't shake the concern that Mira might encounter a severe crisis, one that could even threaten her life.
Feng Ye smiled gently. "I know what you're worried about, Master. Rest assured, I'll keep an eye on her from the shadows. No major issues will arise."
"Oh, in that case, I can relax then." Makarov exhaled in relief at Feng Ye's assurance.
With Feng Ye's covert support, there was little chance of anything disastrous happening. It would be a good lesson for Mira to face some setbacks, recognize her shortcomings, and grow from the experience.
Feng Ye finished his juice and strolled out of the guild, his figure gradually fading into the air and vanishing from sight.
...
Mira left the guild and soon located her sister, Lisanna, and brother, Elfman.
Although she was confident in tackling the Beast King quest alone, she considered that if Elfman could absorb the Beast King's soul, it would greatly enhance his strength.
Out of concern for her siblings, Mira felt it would be better to bring them along. After all, she was now an S-class mage, capable of taking care of her brother and sister.
However, Feng Ye, lurking in the shadows, shook his head slightly.
If Mira had gone alone, even if she found herself outmatched by the Beast King, she indeed possessed the ability to retreat safely.
But bringing Elfman and Lisanna changed the situation. Their ordinary abilities would be of little use against the Beast King and might even become a burden.
"Overconfidence without absolute strength is indeed not a good thing." Feng Ye murmured softly.
He had accompanied Erza and Mira on quests before, and even led a group of six, including Erza, Mira, Juvia, Wendy, and Lisanna, on an SS-class quest.
But the reason he dared to do so was because of his overwhelming strength. Whether it was an SS-class or a century quest, he could effortlessly guide them to success.
That ease might have given Mira a false impression.
It led her to believe that advancing to the S-class granted her the qualification and capability to casually bring others along on S-class quests, but that wasn't the case. One needed even stronger abilities to do so.
Several days later.
Mira, accompanied by Elfman and Lisanna, arrived at the forest region marked in the S-class quest to defeat the Beast King.
Although Elfman and Lisanna took the mission seriously, they didn't sense any danger. In their eyes, their sister, Mira, who had already advanced to the rank of S-class Mage, should easily be able to handle such a task.
Having always been protected by their older sister, they had absolute trust in her.
"Roar!!!"
As Mira and her group entered the Beast King's territory, the Beast King also sensed their intrusion and let out a furious roar before emerging from the trees.
A surging wave of magical power emanated from its body, a force that was no less formidable than Mira's. With each step it took, the ground trembled.
"What powerful magic..."
Mira was slightly startled as she sensed the Beast King's power, but she remained confident in her own abilities. She let out a low shout and unleashed her magic as well.
"Receive - Satan Soul!"
Mira transformed into the form of the demon Satan, her body erupting with surging dark magic, and she took to the air to engage the Beast King in a fierce battle.
Lisanna and Elfman, who had intended to assist Mira, felt a sense of awe and fear as they witnessed the terrifying display of power clashing between Mira and the Beast King.
Cold sweat broke out on their foreheads.
The scene before them was quite different from what they had expected. Instead of Mira dominating the fight, it was an even match, with the Beast King even holding a slight advantage!
The terrifying magic unleashed by the Beast King made it seem like neither Lisanna nor Elfman had the qualifications to intervene. It would be dangerous just to get close, let alone offer assistance!
"So strong..."
Lisanna's eyes reflected a hint of fear.
Unconsciously, Elfman and Lisanna took a step back. Elfman watched the battle between Mira and the Beast King with bated breath. "Sis will win. We have to believe in her."
Lisanna nodded, knowing that they could only put their faith in Mira at this point.
Boom! Boom! Boom!!!
The clash between Mira and the Beast King was intense, causing the earth to crack and tremble, and the surrounding trees and foliage to be destroyed in swathes.
Mira unleashed all the techniques at her disposal, but she still struggled to gain the upper hand and couldn't completely overwhelm the Beast King.
Her strength was indeed formidable, worthy of an S-class Mage, and against an opponent of the same level or slightly weaker, her Satan Soul gave her the advantage. However, against an opponent just one level above her, the situation was entirely different from her previous battles!
Even her strongest techniques failed to defeat the Beast King!
And her total magical power was no greater than the Beast King's!
"If this continues... it won't end well..."
Mira's initial composure had faded, and she now felt a sense of panic as she realized her magic power had dropped to less than a third of its maximum.
If she exhausted her magic without defeating the Beast King, she would be in serious trouble!
"Super Cruel Flash!"
"Darkness Torrent!"
"Soul Extinguisher!"
Mira grew anxious and began to frantically unleash her remaining magic, throwing everything she had at the Beast King. Her attacks did inflict some wounds, but none were fatal!
With each powerful technique she used, her magic power rapidly diminished, and finally, after unleashing her last big move, her magic was completely depleted. She couldn't maintain the Satan Soul form any longer, and she reverted to her human form, falling from the sky.
