Chapter 707: Paranoia and Overthinking, Enemies Everywhere
Chapter 707: Paranoia and Overthinking, Enemies Everywhere
"Can these things really block the Snake Father's perception during the sacrifice?" She Xi asked, looking at the large and small packages the spirit had placed on the table.
He was almost at his limit. After all, the sacrifice was urgent, and this was not something he could resolve on his own. It was a counterattack by the current High Priest. With faith at an all-time high, if She Xi didn't want to be retaliated against again, he had to perform the sacrifice.
Even if She Xi could delay it, how long could he delay it for?
Fortunately, the spirit's arrival was a huge help.
"Try them out and you'll know. Do you have any other choice?" the spirit taunted.
She Xi's expression was uncertain. He understood the spirit's implication: the spirit didn't know either.
After all, they hadn't truly tested them, and Qin Muye couldn't guarantee that all of them would work, but as long as one did, it would be enough.
"Alright, I understand. This time, I must crush that bastard," She Xi said with a grim expression.
"Good to know. Don't do anything foolish, or you'll regret it in your next life," the spirit warned sarcastically.
The spirit observed every move She Xi made and could tell that the snake person had ulterior motives, seemingly planning to use Qin Muye to pit the Snake Father against the Lord of the Endless Abyss, hoping for a mutual destruction.
For now, it was just minor actions, but what would happen later was uncertain, so the spirit issued a warning.
A white-eyed wolf, while somewhat forced into their role, still needed to be handled with care.
But She Xi feigned ignorance, saying, "Don't worry, I know my limits and won't make mistakes."
"Hopefully," the spirit replied and then turned to leave. He had come here to deliver the items and give a stern warning.
She Xi stared intently at the departing spirit. Despite his strength, he couldn't detect how the spirit left.
"The Lord of the Endless Abyss is truly generous, to bestow such power on a subordinate," She Xi said sarcastically. In recent days, he had realized that whether it was the Snake Father or the Lord of the Endless Abyss, what they gave him was a favor, not his own power. This offered him no real benefit.
So, he wanted true power.
'Neither the Snake Father nor the mysterious Lord of the Endless Abyss are the best partners. The only one who might truly cooperate is the Heavenly Emperor,' he thought.
Although cooperating with the Heavenly Emperor was like plotting with a tiger, following either the Lord of the Endless Abyss or the Snake Father meant his life was not in his own hands but in theirs, and they could crush him at any moment.
"Let's take it one step at a time," She Xi said, holding a peculiar-looking package as he headed to the Snake Hall. The entire Snake Hall was sealed off by him for the preparations of the sacrifice, and even the current High Priest couldn't enter, let alone anyone else.
'The remnants, they have finally risen to power,' She Xi thought, feeling helpless. He saw all the snake people associated with the current High Priest as remnants who had opposed him, and he blamed his failure on them.
Otherwise, why would they have risen to power? It must have been because they had betrayed him and then taken the fruits of his labor.
Naturally, he was seething with hatred, but he couldn't act now. Otherwise, he would have already executed all the snake people of the High Priest's lineage.
Leaving these remnants to cause trouble was not an option.
'But right now, I can't kill them. I must keep them as figureheads.'
'However, for these remnants, the worst fate is not death but to have the power they fought so hard for slip through their fingers.'
He couldn't kill them, but that didn't mean he couldn't torment them. In She Xi's eyes, these remnants were just as obsessed with power as he was.
So, his revenge was to let them sit in their positions but with no real power, mere figureheads.
This was the best revenge for these 'remnants.'
"Your Majesty, the Snake King, you have arrived," the snake guard at the Snake Hall said respectfully.
"Has the High Priest come by in the last two days?" She Xi asked, feigning curiosity. He was sure the High Priest had come, feeling deeply frustrated at being kept out.
"Since being denied entry last time, he hasn't come back," the snake guard replied.
"???" She Xi looked puzzled. Why aren't you playing by the rules? Shouldn't you be causing a commotion at the Snake Hall to expand your influence? Why haven't you come, or even made any follow-up moves?
"Have any others come by?" She Xi asked more tactfully.
"None. Since the Snake Hall was sealed, no one has come except for the High Priest on the first day, and now you," the snake guard replied honestly.
She Xi's expression was a bit puzzled, but he didn't say much more. "Hmm, I need to go in and set up. Open the door for me."
The snake guard quickly let him into the Snake Hall. On the way, he pondered what these snake people were up to.
'I see, they must have a bigger plan. Unfortunately, all my loyalists have been cleared out, or I could have investigated their plot.'
'These remnants are underestimating me. Do they really think I'll let my guard down just because they pretend to be weak?'
Once inside the Snake Hall, She Xi immediately imagined the High Priest's lineage plotting against him, and he couldn't help but smirk.
'Once I block the Snake Father's perception, even if you try to challenge me during the sacrifice, you won't stand a chance.'
The best time to challenge him would be during the sacrifice. Not only would it embarrass him, but it would also use the Snake Father's power to weaken his authority.
Without the Snake Father's support, everything would be just empty words.
The setup was quickly completed, but She Xi was still unsure as he looked at the devices.
"Made of metal, no power fluctuations. They look like useless decorations. Will they really work?"
He wanted to take them apart to see, but then he thought, if the spirit from the Endless Abyss really wanted to harm him, why go through all this trouble? Why not just attack directly?
So, he didn't touch them. If something went wrong, he would be the one to suffer.
"The Lord of the Endless Abyss has grand plans. The Snake Father probably can't satisfy him," She Xi thought. Since the spirit could provide such valuable items, it must have a bigger goal than just the Snake Father.
The Snake Father was almost all-powerful in She Xi's mind. Anything that could block the Snake Father's perception must be extraordinary.
After setting everything up, She Xi left the Snake Hall, reminding the snake guard not to let any other snake people enter, to ensure his setup remained intact.
The snake guard naturally agreed. After all, they had been doing this all along. He glanced at the setup, which looked like some decorative items, but he didn't pay much attention.
With that, the matter was settled, and She Xi returned to his own snake den.
On the way, he took a detour past the current High Priest's den to gather information. He found the High Priest painting, which made She Xi even more convinced that these 'remnants' had a big conspiracy. Even after being stripped of power, they still had the leisure to paint and enjoy themselves. This was definitely an act.
And they were doing it so well that even She Xi couldn't see through it. If he hadn't been on guard, he would have been deceived.
The High Priest even invited him in for tea, but She Xi declined, citing his busy schedule.
If he had gone in, the High Priest might have tried to pry information out of him, even if he got nothing, he might still sense something from She Xi's attitude.
"Strange, is his work really that busy?" The High Priest looked puzzled as She Xi walked away. Although he had taken the High Priest's position, it was out of necessity. He had been forced into the role, and if not for She Xi's creation of the Three Dukes and Nine Ministers and his own claim to the Snake King's throne, he would have given the High Priest's position back.
After all, being the High Priest meant managing the Snake Hall and overseeing the sacrifices. He would much rather enjoy himself or paint and create art than deal with all that.
"Never mind, once this sacrifice is over, I'll find a way to pass the High Priest's position to someone else," the High Priest thought. Before taking the position, he was just an ordinary snake person. After a few days, he realized that being an ordinary snake person was much better. He could have whatever he wanted without the stress and the responsibility of meeting the Snake Father's war goals.
