Chapter 705: Ambush, Death Eaters, and Dragons
Chapter 705: Ambush, Death Eaters, and Dragons
On the last day of July, after a fruitless morning searching for Dementors, Kyle and Cedric decided to temporarily halt their outdoor pursuit following a discussion.
Ever since the Daily Prophet published the bounty information, the roaming Dementors seemed to have disappeared in large numbers.
Of course, this didn't mean they had all been exchanged for Galleons... One hundred Galleons was tempting, but there weren't many wizards capable of killing Dementors, and it wouldn't happen that quickly.
Kyle guessed that most of the missing Dementors were in hiding, after all, Death Eaters read the newspapers too.
Now, Dementors had transformed from feared calamities into lucrative Galleons, and Lord Voldemort wouldn't just stand by and watch his capable assistants be divided and claimed.
However, this was also a good thing; at least there was no longer a need to worry about Muggles being affected.
Moreover, with the Dementors in hiding, it was more convenient to capture them all at once. The only problem now was finding their exact location.
But this was a matter for Dumbledore to consider.
After making their decision, Kyle and Cedric prepared to return, but before that, they needed to check out the last address on the list.
This address had been added just a few minutes ago, indicating that someone had discovered the trail of a Dementor and reported it to the Ministry of Magic.
After being busy for several days, one more wouldn't make much difference.
"Do you think someone might have gotten there before us again?" Cedric asked.
"Who knows," Kyle said, "But this address just appeared, so there probably isn't anyone there yet."
"Finally, it's over..." Cedric rubbed his forehead, "I don't care, you have to give me three days off when we get back."
"Don't you like flying?" Kyle smiled, "It's common for Quidditch matches to last a week, you won't be able to become a professional player like this."
"Is it the same?" Cedric said irritably, "You don't have to worry about Dementors on the Quidditch pitch."
"I guess..." Kyle shrugged, "But whether you get time off or not isn't up to me."
"Then I don't care, my salary for this month can't be reduced." Cedric said with a hint of cheekiness.
Kyle was a little dazed, finding it hard to imagine that Cedric could say such words...
"The vacation doesn't matter..." Kyle glanced at him, "It's best to avoid contact with Fred and George in the future, and don't learn their bad habits of being sneaky and slippery."
"They're far worse than you," Cedric muttered under his breath.
The two soon arrived in Hampshire, but after flying around the address for half an hour, they still couldn't find any trace of the Dementor. However, they spotted three wizards in the air above a forest, all riding broomsticks, with a large locked trunk beside them.
Before they could get close, Kyle heard their excited chatter.
"A live Dementor is worth two hundred Galleons, what luck."
"Yeah, I didn't expect these guys to become so valuable..."
"It's a pity there's only one, otherwise, we would have really struck it rich..."
There was no need to guess; the trunk must contain a Dementor.
"Looks like someone got here before us," Cedric said softly, "I didn't expect anyone could capture a Dementor alive, they're quite capable."
Kyle nodded.
Facing such a dangerous creature as the Dementor, the difficulty of capturing it far exceeded the challenge of killing it. Each breath of the Dementor significantly weakened a wizard's fighting power...
Since there were three of them, they probably used multiple Patronuses to surround it.
Kyle glanced at the cheerful trio, with no intention of greeting them, and turned his broomstick around with Cedric to head directly back to the Ministry of Magic.
However, at this moment, a protective tree branch suddenly emerged from Kyle's collar, its sharp fingers piercing his neck.
Instinctively, Kyle turned his broomstick around, colliding with Cedric beside him.
Caught off guard, Cedric nearly fell from his broomstick.
"Kyle, what are you..." Cedric's words were cut short as he saw three spells fly past, right where Kyle had been moments ago.
No explanation was needed.
"Wait!" Cedric quickly lifted the Disillusionment Charm, looking at the three wizards in the distance, "We just happened to pass by, we have no ill intentions, and we won't take your Dementor..."
"Get rid of the extra one!"
Before he could finish, three more spells flew towards them.
Although Cedric tried to dodge, one spell still hit his broomstick.
Black smoke rose from the broomstick's tail, and Cedric wobbled as he fell towards the ground.
As Kyle prepared to grab him, he was blocked by an incoming spell, forcing him to turn around.
"I didn't expect you to dodge that..." said the bearded wizard among the three, "You're indeed the Triwizard Tournament champion."
"You know me?" Kyle glanced down quickly, and only relaxed slightly when he saw Cedric had drawn his wand in mid-air.
"Of course, you're quite valuable now." Greed flashed in the eyes of the other bearded wizard, "Lord Voldemort has declared that whoever can kill you will receive the highest honor and a generous reward."
"A generous reward?" Kyle asked curiously, "Is it one million Galleons?"
"If so, we can definitely work together."
The bearded wizard was a bit lost in Kyle's train of thought. He couldn't understand how they could possibly collaborate on this matter.
"It's simple," Kyle explained. "I'll make the Polyjuice Potion, you let the person behind you drink it, and then kill him. That way, you can claim the reward, right?"
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. We'll split the reward, nine to one, and you'll get the lion's share."
As soon as Kyle finished speaking, the wizard behind the bearded wizard became tense, and his wand subconsciously shifted direction.
"You fool!" The bearded wizard scolded.
Then he turned to Kyle, "Do you really think you can cause infighting among us with such petty tricks? Stop dreaming. No one can deceive the great Dark Lord, and no one dares to do such a thing."
"That's right," said the bearded wizard, "and the reward from the Dark Lord is not something as vulgar as Galleons. It can't be divided!"
"I don't think Galleons are vulgar," Kyle muttered. "By the way, are you waiting for me here on purpose? If so, how did you know I would pass by here?"
"Stop talking nonsense and kill him quickly!" The female witch among the three glared at Kyle with deep-seated hatred in her eyes, "You should have known this would happen when you killed my brother..."
"Your brother?" Kyle was confused, "Who is he?"
"Amicus Carrow!" The witch screamed.
Kyle remembered. This person seemed to be the Death Eater in the Giant Valley.
"No, you've got the wrong person!" Kyle said, "The one who killed your brother is Hagrid. You should go find him, not me."
"You can't just come after me because you can't beat a half-giant. I'm not an easy target."
"You will all die!" The witch said with a hint of madness, "You're the first, and soon others will join you!"
"So you're confident you can kill me?"
"Do you think you can still escape?" The witch sneered, "In my eyes, you're not that formidable, and no one here can help you!"
"How about we discuss this?" Kyle stammered, "I'll tell you where Hagrid is, and you can go find him..."
"Shut up, don't think I don't know you're stalling for time!" The witch interrupted him.
"Rest assured, by the time the Aurors arrive, you'll already be dead."
"Fine..." Kyle shrugged, "But if you know I'm stalling, why are you saying so much?"
"Avada Kedavra!" A flash of green light instantly approached.
However, in the next second, a massive figure appeared in front of Kyle, blocking the incoming Killing Curse.
The dark scales shimmered with a chilling glow, and the Killing Curse hitting them caused several scales to quickly turn a grayish-white.
But Norbert's massive body was unaffected by the scales.
"Fire, dragon?"
All three Death Eaters were stunned, and the bearded wizard rubbed his eyes, unable to believe what he was seeing.
How could there possibly be a dragon here?
Before he could figure it out, Norbert, enraged by the Killing Curse, opened his mouth and blasted a scorching dragon flame at the trio.
They instinctively tried to run, but Kyle wasn't going to give them that chance.
"Obstacle!"
"Stupefy!"
To dodge Kyle's spell, they had to forcibly change their direction.
However, this brief pause caused one Death Eater to be engulfed by the dragon flame and fall to the ground.
The other two were lucky to escape, but they weren't in a much better situation either. The sky was the dragon's domain, and riding a broomstick couldn't make up for that.
Norbert flapped his wings and swiftly charged at the nearest Death Eater.
The bearded wizard had never felt his broomstick move so slowly. In an instant, he felt himself engulfed by a shadow.
He couldn't help but turn around and shout,
"I surrender, me, armor..."
"Bang!"
Before he could finish his sentence, a heavy tail covered in scales slammed into him.
With a loud bang, he was knocked towards the ground.
Only the witch named Carrow was left.
Things happened too fast for her to understand what was going on, and the three-on-one situation quickly turned into a one-on-one.
Although she wanted to kill Kyle, the raging dragon behind her and the rising temperature around made her dare not turn back, only wanting to escape quickly.
The dragon closely pursued, the distance getting closer...
However, just as Norbert was about to catch up to Carrow, two hooded Death Eaters appeared nearby.
The simultaneous Killing Curses forced Norbert to stop.
Norbert had never been treated this way before. He immediately dove towards the location of the two Death Eaters, unleashing a torrent of dragon flame.
But before that, the two Death Eaters' figures had already disappeared.
Kyle flew over and calmed the agitated Norbert.
Although he didn't know who the two Death Eaters behind him were, they had delayed Norbert, and the witch named Carrow had escaped.
Kyle didn't plan to chase her either.
If he wanted to, he could have caught up with her, relying on the speed of the Firebolt. But he didn't know if there were any more ambushes nearby, so for safety, it was better not to take risks... After all, it wasn't just about him anymore.
When Kyle landed on the ground, he quickly found Cedric leaning against a tree.
Despite using a spell to slow his descent, Cedric still suffered a nasty fall.
"How are you?" Kyle asked.
"I'm fine," Cedric gritted his teeth, his leg twisted in an odd position, likely broken.
"And you, are you okay?" Kyle panted, "Who are those three?"
"Death Eaters," Kyle replied.
"As expected, those guys," Cedric handed the booklet to Kyle, "I've already notified the Aurors, they should be here soon."
Kyle glanced at the booklet, noticing an additional line after the latest address.
"Black Wizard discovered, urgent situation..."
Cedric had added this, and the Aurors had several such booklets. To save time, any additions or modifications made to one booklet would appear on the others.
This indicated that the Aurors would arrive shortly.
"Wait here for a moment," Kyle stood up and walked towards the woods.
"Where are you going?" Cedric asked anxiously, "It's dangerous, come back quickly."
However, Kyle showed no signs of stopping. Soon, he found the two Death Eaters who had fallen earlier.
To Kyle's surprise, the bearded wizard, Norbert, had been struck by a dragon's tail and fell from the sky, yet he was still alive, even attempting to escape with a limp.
He must have cast the Iron Body Charm at the last moment...
Kyle didn't think much and walked straight towards him.
"Damn it!" the Death Eater rasped, "The Dark Lord... won't let you go!"
"You don't need to remind me," Kyle said without hesitation, pointing his wand at the Death Eater.
"What do you think you're doing...?" The Death Eater broke into a cold sweat, "You can't... can't kill me... Dumbledore wouldn't allow it..."
"Legilimency!"
The Death Eater's eyes immediately became scattered.
...
"Crack! Crack! Crack!"
A few seconds later, a series of crisp explosions echoed through the surroundings... The Aurors had arrived.
"Obliviate!"
"Kyle!" Chris rushed over, his face tense with concern, "How are you, are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Dad," Kyle smiled, "He tried to escape, but I caught him."
"Leave it to the Aurors," Chris said, "Come with me, I'll take you to St. Mungo's."
"I'm really fine, just send Cedric there," Kyle said, "But Dad, how did you get here?"
"Amos recognized Cedric's handwriting, so I guessed you encountered Death Eaters," Chris asked anxiously, "What happened?"
"It seems the Death Eaters were planning to take away the Dementors, and we happened to run into them," Kyle explained.
This was what Kyle had seen in the bearded wizard's mind.
Initially, Kyle thought the wizard had set a trap specifically for him, but it turned out to be just a coincidence.
The Death Eaters were delivering a message to the Dementors on behalf of the Dark Lord and were responsible for escorting them away. Coincidentally, Kyle and Cedric arrived at the same time.
The Illusion Charm's concealment effect wasn't very effective during the day. Upon noticing the two, the Death Eaters put on a show, planning to commit a crime before leaving to report to the Dark Lord.
Then, the previous scene unfolded.
However, Kyle was surprised to find that he was so valuable. Whether dead or alive, as long as they could bring him back, not only would he become a core Death Eater, but the Dark Lord would personally enhance his abilities.
This treatment was even more prestigious than Harry's. No wonder their eyes had turned red upon seeing Kyle.
At this moment, Scrimgeour arrived. He surveyed the surroundings and, upon noticing the area ravaged by dragon flames, frowned slightly.
"This doesn't seem like an ordinary Fire Charm."
"Death Eaters," Kyle said angrily, "Those heartless bastards, they're despicable."
"I see," Scrimgeour nodded, not overly concerned.
The Death Eaters' Dark Magic was indeed peculiar, and the Fire Charm was one of their common methods.
Chris, standing nearby, twitched the corner of his mouth. He glanced at Kyle but ultimately said nothing.
Afterward, Amos Diggory used a key to take Kyle and the injured Cedric away from the scene, heading back to the Ministry of Magic.
After they left, Scrimgeour approached a scorched tree, reaching out to touch its trunk.
"Chris, come take a look, this can't be dragon fire, can it?"
"Ah, no," Chris also touched the trunk, taking a deep breath and speaking calmly, "Dragon flames would have a stronger sulfur smell and adhesion. What appeared here... should just be a special Magical Fire."
"That's good," Scrimgeour breathed a sigh of relief, "If there's a dragon among the Death Eaters, that would be truly troublesome."
"Yes," Chris agreed.
"But your son is truly exceptional," Scrimgeour smiled, "Facing two Death Eaters, he drove one away and captured the other. He's a natural-born Auror, and it's a waste of talent to be stuck in the Minister's office."
"Ahem..." Chris chuckled but quickly regained his composure, coughing twice, "I must remind you, Rufus, not to mention this in the Ministry."
"Of course, I won't," Scrimgeour said, "But you should really convince Kyle to become an Auror. It suits him."
"I will," Chris smiled, "But the final decision still lies with Kyle."
