Chapter 702: Ambush
Chapter 702: Ambush
At 10:12, Supervisor Wen arrived at the designated location by train.
He and his team disembarked and made their way towards the passage entrance. Among the group he brought were his trusted subordinates and some personnel from other Central Cities, supplied by their respective cities.
Supervisor Wen didn't plan to rely on these additional members as his main force. Instead, he intended to use them as backup, knowing that they might not give their all for another city and that they wouldn't want their own people to be used as cannon fodder.
As they reached their destination, a team of soldiers saluted them, "Supervisor!"
Supervisor Wen returned the salute and asked, "Is everything ready?"
"Yes, sir. All set."
Supervisor Wen scanned the area with his World Credential and was pleased to see that communications were clear and personnel were in place at all critical locations.
For this operation, he had sent people ahead to survey the terrain, set up surveillance, and deploy domain and interference creatures, along with some simple, hidden secret department organisms.
Just seventeen or eighteen minutes away, there was a local base with ample ammunition and food supplies, which had been used to support this operation. In fact, if the passage hadn't been under the control of the City Council, the base would have been even closer, allowing for constant monitoring of the area.
However, the situation was quite the opposite. Thick vegetation obscured the view of the base, making it difficult to observe the area. The only nearby structures were a simple maintenance inspection station and a watchtower on a hill.
Supervisor Wen glanced at the watchtower on the distant hill, a crucial vantage point for observing the entire area. Due to its distance, it was challenging to communicate directly with the World Credential, so he asked, "Is that area set up?"
A member of his team responded, "Yes, sir. Supervisor Han has already sent people there, and we have our people in place. We received a telegram confirmation ten minutes ago."
Supervisor Wen paused for a moment, then said, "Send a cipher letter to confirm again."
"Yes, sir!"
After a while, a team member reported, "Supervisor, everything is confirmed."
Supervisor Wen instructed, "Remember to confirm again before the operation begins." The team member acknowledged the order.
"Also..."
Supervisor Wen made a few taps on his World Credential, arranging for vehicles to be stationed at several locations. He instructed them to maintain contact via telegram and to retreat towards the base if they received an emergency signal.
"Understood!"
After finalizing all the arrangements, Supervisor Wen met with Supervisor Han to reconfirm the deployment of their respective teams.
Supervisor Han was responsible for blocking the rear, while Supervisor Wen would launch the attack from the side.
With the mortars and machine guns they had set up, they held a significant advantage in the predetermined battlefield. The only concern was preventing a powerful fighter from launching a counter-attack, which would ensure a smooth operation.
The presence of powerful fighters was precisely what they wanted, as they intended to personally engage and eliminate them. Once these fighters were dealt with, the remaining opposition would be of little concern.
After personally inspecting the positions, Supervisor Wen and Supervisor Han parted ways, each returning to their posts. Supervisor Wen checked his watch; it was 11:22. If their timing was accurate, the Linax Federation personnel would arrive in about ten minutes.
Just then, an armored vehicle approached from the direction of the railway tracks. Since they had already sealed off this area, Processing Bureau officers immediately moved to intercept it. However, upon seeing the identification presented by the occupants, they had no choice but to let the vehicle pass.
Supervisor Wen was surprised by the identity of the visitors and used his World Credential to inform Supervisor Han of the situation, saying, "There's a slight issue, I'll go handle it first."
Supervisor Han, who was also observing the scene, responded, "Deal with it quickly; the Linax Federation personnel are almost here."
Supervisor Wen waved his hand and approached the armored vehicle. Two individuals, wearing fedoras and black trench coats, descended from the vehicle.
As they approached, one of them presented their name card, "We are investigators from the Administrative Bureau. There's a case that requires your immediate investigation, Supervisor Wen. Please come with us."
The other person showed a "Investigation Order" they were holding.
Supervisor Wen was even more perplexed. While the Administrative Bureau had the authority to inspect and question officials, it was subject to rank and position. For someone of his status, even if there was an issue, he should have been notified in advance. It was unusual for them to show up unannounced and demand his presence for an investigation.
However, an "Investigation Order" was typically issued in urgent situations, and even someone of his rank had an obligation to comply.
Supervisor Wen said, "Officers, I have a critical mission at hand. Can you wait for a while? I'll join you once I've completed my task."
One of the Administrative Bureau members shook their head and spoke in a stern tone, "We apologize, Supervisor Wen, it's not that we're unwilling to accommodate. However, the matter we're investigating is directly related to your current operation. That's why our superiors are so eager to meet with you. We must insist that you return with us immediately for questioning."
Supervisor Wen furrowed his brows. In the time it took for this exchange, several minutes had passed. If the operation proceeded smoothly, there was a chance to intercept the Linax Federation personnel right here.
As he considered making another attempt, Supervisor Han seemed to notice the issue and arrived in a vehicle. Stepping out of the car, he said, "Supervisor Wen, we have less than three minutes left. We've already encountered the advance team from the Linax Federation, and we must be prepared."
He turned to the two Administrative Bureau officials, "The Administrative Bureau?"
Supervisor Wen nodded helplessly.
"Did you notify the Administrative Bureau about this, Supervisor Wen?" Supervisor Han asked.
The officials from the Administrative Bureau ignored Supervisor Han's question and stared at Supervisor Wen. One of them slowly said, "Supervisor Wen, Director Wu hopes that you'll cooperate."
Supervisor Wen was taken aback. Director Wu was currently under interrogation, and according to procedure, it was impossible for him to communicate with the outside world or issue orders to his subordinates. Was this before the interrogation?
The name Supervisor Wen used in his previous letters, Supervisor Wen Chu, was known only to Director Wu. He didn't know why Director Wu had used this name, but as a loyal subordinate, he wouldn't question it.
"Alright, I'll go with you," Supervisor Wen said.
Supervisor Wen turned back to Supervisor Han and apologized, "I'm sorry, Supervisor Han. I have to go with them, but I'll leave my team under your command. They'll fully cooperate with you."
Supervisor Han looked at the two Administrative Bureau officials and asked, "Can I have a word with Supervisor Wen?"
In the 1619 version of the book, there was no mistake in this sentence!
The two officials glanced at each other and didn't respond, but it was clear they had silently agreed.
Supervisor Wen followed Supervisor Han as they walked, apologizing, "I'm truly sorry, Supervisor Han, but I have to follow Director Wu's instructions."
"I understand. This is an unexpected situation, and no one could have foreseen it. Some things are just impossible to go according to your plan, but there's still a way to make up for it..."
As Supervisor Han spoke, he suddenly punched Supervisor Wen in the chest.
The punch was so fast it was unbelievable, especially at such close range.
With a loud 'bang', Supervisor Wen, in an almost impossible feat, lifted his hand to block the punch, and a circle of outward-shooting energy burst from the point of contact.
In that moment, the two men's heart strength collided, but Supervisor Wen wasn't the one who had attacked; he was the defender, and so he was at a greater disadvantage.
His palm and arm, used to block the punch, seemed to be sliced by countless blades, leaving long, thin wounds. A larger hole burst open on his back, and the clothes and protective vest underneath tore with a loud 'pa' sound.
This was Supervisor Han's specialty, the "Triphasic Force."
This force had three variations: the first turned into fine threads that pierced the opponent's heart and exploded it from within; the second acted like countless blades, slicing through flesh and bone; and the third entangled the enemy, making it impossible for them to escape. The user could choose which variation to use at will.
Unleashing this force was a true test of an opponent's ability to react. If one misjudged and used the wrong countermeasure, they might be completely invaded by the force, making it an extremely difficult one to defend against, especially when unleashed suddenly, making it even more dangerous.
Supervisor Wen, in that moment of crisis, not only accurately judged the force's variation but also, in a hurried state, guided the force to explode from his back, preventing it from settling in his body.
So, despite the grim appearance, he wasn't severely injured.
At the same time, Supervisor Han was also affected by Supervisor Wen's force, causing him to stumble backward, unable to follow up with his next move. He couldn't help but look at Supervisor Wen and say, "Spatial Stagnation Force..."
The Spatial Stagnation Force was a technique that excelled at restricting an opponent's strength. Once hit by heart strength, the opponent would involuntarily become stiff and numb, unable to react, move, or use their strength.
After three years of working together, Supervisor Han had never known what kind of strength Supervisor Wen possessed. So, he was slightly affected, but as the opponent's strength was unleashed in a hurry, it didn't hinder him much. Instantly dispelling the remaining force, he tapped his toes and rushed towards Supervisor Wen.
At the same time, the officials from the Administrative Bureau, seeing the sudden turn of events, reacted swiftly. They quickly drew their guns, and before they could aim, shots rang out from Supervisor Han's car, parked nearby, and two heads exploded in quick succession.
Supervisor Wen's expression turned solemn, and he sensed a rustling sound in his ear; the communication was being jammed by domain creatures.
He didn't question Supervisor Han's actions because, from the moment they engaged, these things became unimportant.
Just as Supervisor Wen tried to adjust and respond to Supervisor Han's next attack, a figure suddenly burst out of the car, appearing at his side in an instant, accompanied by an incredibly strong sense of oppression.
