Chapter 70: Mother Zhou's Outburst
Chapter 70: Mother Zhou’s Outburst
Wenwan frowned at Pan Daidi’s words. "Auntie, don’t say such things. Sister Jiang Xia doesn’t seem like that kind of person. This letter is just from a regular classmate, or maybe it’s about something important."
Pan Daidi sneered. "Pfft, she is exactly that kind of person! Flies don’t land on uncracked eggs. Why hasn’t any scoundrel written to you or me? Only to her!"
She’s nothing but a slut, always dressing up to seduce men.
If it weren’t for her seducing my son, would he have touched her? She almost kicked him so hard he couldn’t have children! She even got beaten by Zhou Chenglei, was criticized, and had to pay a fine. She was hospitalized for almost half a month and only recently got out!
She wishes Jiang Xia would just die!
Mother Zhou was carrying two buckets of urine to fertilize the eggplants.
The grudge from the last time the whole family attacked them still hadn’t faded!
She carried the two buckets of watered-down urine and deliberately swayed as she passed Pan Daidi, splashing urine all over her feet, soaking half her pants and shoes.
Whether it was a blessing or a curse, she was wearing black plastic sandals.
The whole dirt road reeked!
Pan Daidi jumped up in shock. "Ah! What are you doing? Are you crazy?"
Some of the splashed urine even hit Wenwan’s feet and pants.
"My shoes!" Wenwan screamed. She only had one pair of shoes!
It was disgusting!
Wenwan couldn’t help but gag.
Mother Zhou said smugly, "Sorry, it was an accident! Who made you spew filth on the road? Now you’re the one who stinks!"
"That’s not an accident, you did it on purpose! Who’s spewing filth? I’m just stating the facts! Your daughter-in-law is a fox, and now men are sending her love letters!"
Pan Daidi was so angry she reached out to push Mother Zhou.
Mother Zhou, holding the two buckets of urine, looked ready to splash it if Pan Daidi dared to touch her. "What? Want to hit me? Come on! You dirty bitch, last time you shamelessly bullied my daughter-in-law, and I haven’t settled the score yet! Now you’re slandering her! Come on! Let’s fight! I’ll drown you in urine! You dare to smear my daughter-in-law with filth! Come on! See if I don’t drown you! You damn scumbag!"
Pan Daidi, seeing Mother Zhou’s two buckets of yellow urine, didn’t dare to provoke her!
"Psycho! I don’t want to talk to you, good intentions get no reward! I’m not wrong, those love letters are proof! Otherwise, why don’t you open them in front of everyone?"
Open those letters in front of everyone? Wenwan wanted to go wash her shoes but held back, feeling a bit curious.
Mother Zhou, of course, wouldn’t open the letters in public. She wasn’t that stupid. "I don’t do low things like peeking at other people’s letters. I’m not as low as you! You’re the one who stinks from head to toe! I’ll drown you if you slander my daughter-in-law again!"
Mother Zhou made a move as if to charge at her with the urine buckets!
"Pervert! Psycho! I’m just kindly reminding you to keep an eye on your good daughter-in-law, so she doesn’t run off with someone one day and you can’t find her!" Pan Daidi ran away in fear!
Too smelly, too disgusting!
Mother Zhou looked at Wenwan.
Wenwan felt a bit guilty and tried to stay calm. "I didn’t know passing a letter would cause trouble for Sister Jiang Xia and Auntie. I’m really sorry, don’t blame me, I’ll go now!"
With that, she ran away too!
Mother Zhou watched Wenwan’s retreating back. This girl was no good!
If it was intentional, she had bad character!
If it was unintentional, she was just stupid!
Thankfully, she hadn’t married her to Ah Lei.
Mother Zhou then looked at Tian Caihua.
Tian Caihua knew her mother-in-law was formidable and had already fled when she saw her coming!
In the village, if her mother-in-law was second in arguments, no one would be first!
She immediately handed the letters to Mother Zhou. "Mom, what should we do with these letters?"
"Or give it to Xia Jiang?"
Mrs. Zhou took the letter with a blank expression and stuffed it into her pocket.
Mrs. Zhou had received some education in her youth and could recognize a few characters, even though she had learned traditional Chinese. This didn't stop her from recognizing simplified characters, especially Xia Jiang's name.
In the distance, Wen Wan stood by the stream, washing, but she didn't forget to look up. Seeing Tian Caihua hand the letter to Mrs. Zhou, she felt that her purpose was achieved.
She knew Tian Caihua had a sharp tongue and had deliberately given her the letter in the morning when everyone was watering the vegetable garden. This way, the whole village would see and hear about it, and the rumors of Xia Jiang and Wu Qizhi's elopement would start again.
Tian Caihua, unable to keep secrets, would inevitably tell Mrs. Zhou about Xia Jiang and Zhou Chenglei's plan to divorce once the household registration was transferred back.
Moreover, Zhou Chenglei, upon returning and seeing the letters Xia Jiang wrote to Wu Qizhi, filled with disdain for him and his family and affection for Wu Qizhi, would he be able to bear it? Even if he had some feelings for her, those letters would likely cool his heart.
Of course, the letters Xia Jiang wrote to Wu Qizhi didn't express any love for him. In her letters, she only asked Wu Qizhi to help her with the divorce and clearly stated that she didn't like him, that their elopement was a ruse, and that she would introduce him to a job afterward. She had altered only one of those letters.
The other two letters were genuine, clearly replies to Wu Qizhi, filled with complaints about life in the countryside and the Zhou family, and a strong desire to divorce and return to the city to continue her studies.
Wen Wan watched as Mrs. Zhou calmly carried the bucket of urine to their vegetable garden, her heart tingling with anticipation.
The calmer the surface, the bigger the storm.
Wen Wan, thinking of something, immediately got out of the stream. She needed to call Wu Qizhi. She had been to the dock that morning and knew that Xia Jiang hadn't gone out to sea with Zhou Chenglei today.
Mrs. Zhou placed the bucket of urine in their vegetable garden, planning to fertilize the vegetables in the evening. She didn't want to do it in the morning because the strong sun could scorch the plants.
She told Tian Caihua, "Give me the water bucket after you finish watering the vegetables."
Then she squatted down to start weeding the garden.
Tian Caihua, not in the mood to water vegetables, looked around and saw that everyone was busy in their own gardens, far away and out of earshot. She squatted down and helped with the weeding, saying, "Mom, there's something I don't know if I should tell you."
"Spit it out!" Mrs. Zhou, in a bad mood, snapped.
She knew her daughter-in-law couldn't keep her mouth shut.
"It's about the fourth brother and Xia Jiang. They've already agreed to divorce..."
After finishing in the vegetable garden, Mrs. Zhou returned home around ten o'clock.
Xia Jiang was braiding Zhou Zhou's hair. That morning, she had washed all the new clothes she had bought. One of Zhou Zhou's dresses, being very thin, had dried quickly, so Xia Jiang had her change into it and then braided her hair into two pigtails.
Seeing Mrs. Zhou return, Xia Jiang greeted her, "Mom."
Zhou Zhou also greeted her, "Grandma."
Her fever had subsided, and she was feeling better.
Mrs. Zhou placed the eggplants, green beans, and bitter melons she had picked on the kitchen windowsill and said to Xia Jiang, "Xia Jiang, come inside. I have something to ask you. Zhou Zhou, sit here and be good."
