Chapter 7: Acquiring the Title
Chapter 7: Acquiring the Title
Obtaining thirty gold coins so quickly would make Father Vic feel he had undervalued himself, prompting him to raise the price at the last moment.
- This delicate balance needed careful consideration.
After two arduous days, Karl's 'Piety' finally earned Father Vic's approval, and he agreed to bestow his blessing.
In this world, where powers beyond ordinary humans existed, only the blessing of the deity could transform one into a true noble.
The ceremony was less intricate than the inheritance process but still required bathing, dressing, and prayers.
The entire process took one to two days.
Karl, dressed in a white shirt and red robe, placed his weapon and light armor on the altar, holding the scriptures and swearing an oath.
"I, Carl Bergman, swear before the great Dawn Lord's statue to uphold loyalty and honor for my entire life..."
"As a noble, I shall treat the weak with kindness and bravely stand against violence, fighting for those unarmed..."
"Baron Carl."
At the church entrance, a blonde-haired woman nodded at Karl, who had just finished the ceremony.
"Congratulations."
"Daina," Karl stopped in his tracks, his voice tinged with surprise.
"How are you here?"
The woman before him had distinct features and a tall figure. A sheathed longsword hung at her waist, and her shoulder-length blonde hair naturally lifted.
Her long pants hugged her slender legs, and the leather top perfectly accentuated her curves, giving her a wild and beautiful aura.
Daina Yegel, the South City Patrol Chief, was the third daughter of Viscount Sassoon and Karl's direct superior.
They weren't particularly close.
The young and beautiful woman took something from behind her and handed it to Karl.
"A gift."
"Thank you."
Karl bowed in gratitude and accepted the present.
It was a gentleman's cane, beautifully crafted from cedar wood with silver embellishments, providing an excellent grip.
"As a noble, how can you not have a cane by your side?" Daina said with a light laugh.
"I happened to have some business nearby, so I came to see you."
"Do you need help?" Karl tapped the ground with his cane, not overly polite, as the cost of the gift was not a concern.
"You're still on vacation." Daina folded her arms.
"Two commoners died last night, and someone claimed it was the work of a vampire. I had to go and check it out."
"A vampire?" Karl's expression changed.
"Is it real?"
"Of course it's not!" Daina chuckled.
"Whether or not vampires exist is uncertain, but the blood on the victims was indeed drained."
"Hmm..."
"Although it's strange, it's something the patrol officers can handle."
Karl nodded.
As inspectors, they only intervened in matters involving nobles or those with significant impact; the officers were responsible for routine security and apprehending fugitives.
This was the difference between an inspector and an officer.
"Carl."
As they walked, Daina spoke up.
"Do you remember my cousin, Martha?"
"Martha?"
Karl's mind flashed back to an image of a young, cheerful girl at a banquet.
"I remember."
"She's still unmarried." Daina looked at Karl and said,
"She's only a few years younger than you. Why don't you get to know her?"
"This..." Karl's face showed hesitation.
"I don't want to get married so soon, and I'm afraid my appearance might scare others."
He touched the scar on his face as he spoke.
"Looks don't matter for a man." Daina said.
"Now that you're a noble, there will be women willing to marry you, even bringing wealth."
Karl remained silent.
He had no resistance to living off others, but he wasn't used to others offering him such an arrangement.
Before he became a baron, she had never mentioned this, and now it was likely because she had her eyes on his title.
"Just like Uncle Gerald."
"For a family to prosper, it's not enough to rely on a single person," Daina continued. "Our Yegerzon family has flourished today because we have many children, and our blood's influence is significant."
"Yes."
Karl nodded, then suddenly spoke up. "It seems the Captain hasn't chosen a fiance yet?"
Damn! As soon as the words left his mouth, he regretted it. This woman wasn't someone to be trifled with, and it was already too late to realize his mistake.
"Hmm?"
Daina's expression darkened, and her steps halted. An intangible pressure seemed to envelop the entire place.
The overwhelming aura of life felt almost tangible, causing Karl to gasp.
Knight Attendant!
It was said that she had already reached the pinnacle of the Knight Attendant rank and could become a full-fledged Knight at any moment. Apparently, it was true.
The golden-haired beauty before him was not at all fragile; if she were to take action, even three of him might not be a match for her.
While Karl had trained since childhood, his physique remained within the ordinary human range. Facing a peak Knight Attendant was like a mouse encountering a cat; the aura of life from a superior being instinctively intimidated him.
"Captain."
Karl's throat rolled as he swallowed. "I just remembered I have some family matters to attend to. May I take my leave?"
"..." Daina's expression remained blank, and she gave a slight nod. Karl hurriedly left.
"This guy..."
Watching Karl's retreating figure, Daina's eyes revealed a hint of surprise. "His personality seems different from before?" she mused.
The old Karl was impulsive, prone to shouting and yelling. His recent behavior, while somewhat disrespectful, was more cautious.
Stroking her chin, she shook her head lightly, deciding not to dwell on it. It was common for someone's personality to change drastically after experiencing life-threatening situations.
Back at his residence, Jenny was singing as usual, her voice even more enchanting than before.
Indeed, she had a remarkable talent for singing.
"Thud!"
Karl threw himself onto the bed, his fingers intertwined as he stared at the ceiling, seemingly lost in thought.
'Having a noble identity is indeed convenient. Even Captain Daina is proactively playing matchmaker.'
'But what I want isn't money!'
If he desired wealth and a comfortable life, marrying the daughter of a wealthy merchant would be the best choice.
With his baron status, achieving this wouldn't be difficult.
But Karl didn't lack money.
Hmm,
at least not for now, and most likely not in the future either.
The other world was somewhat dangerous, but acquiring a certain amount of wealth there was relatively easy.
"I want a Breath Technique!"
As far as he knew, most Breath Techniques were in the hands of the Church, with the rest passed down among great nobles and knights.
Very few were scattered outside these circles.
Obtaining one was even more challenging; even some noble families with centuries of heritage didn't possess Breath Techniques.
'Compared to here, Breath Techniques in the other world are more accessible, at least with money as a means to acquire them.'
Several days later, Karl drew back the curtain and gazed at the full moon in the night sky.
"Blessings of the Dawn Lord..."
Closing the curtain, he gathered all the items he had prepared and held them close. Closing his eyes, he arrived at the mysterious place.
With the help of the portal, Karl once again traveled to the other world, carrying numerous supplies.
This time,
that bone-chilling aura of darkness was absent.
"On the Scorching Moon Day, the smog dissipates, and half-dead creatures dare not show themselves. Even the Black City becomes safe."
