Chapter 699: Feng Ye's Second Challenge
Chapter 699: Feng Ye's Second Challenge
"The founding president..." Wendy blinked, her eyes shining with admiration.
Erza also smiled gently, echoing her sentiment: "I've heard our founding president is the renowned 'Fairy Tactician' who made significant contributions to the development of the magical world. I wonder what kind of person she is."
"I've never met the founding president either," Makarov added, his eyes softening as he gazed towards Tenrou Island. "I was told my name was given to me by the founding president. Unfortunately, according to the second master, the founding president left the guild after receiving a call from her teacher soon after, and never returned."
"She never came back?" Jubia asked, a hint of surprise in her voice. "Who was this teacher of hers, and why haven't I heard of them before?"
"Jubia, you don't read enough books," Makarov teased, turning to look at her. "The teacher of our founding president was the greatest wizard from four hundred years ago. They made immense contributions to the prosperity of the human world and magic, and many of the things they left behind have become holy sites."
"Eh?" Jubia exclaimed, taken aback. "Four hundred years ago?"
She started counting on her fingers, calculating that if Makarov was the third master, then the founding president must have lived an incredibly long life to still be around from four hundred years ago. "Is the founding president a few hundred years old?" she wondered aloud.
"No," Makarov shook his head. "The founding president is indeed someone from a hundred years ago."
Erza mused, "So that means that great wizard lived for three hundred years?"
Makarov paused for a moment before responding, "Perhaps. But that wizard hasn't been seen since around four hundred years ago. Aside from the founding president, no one has laid eyes on them, so whether they're still alive or not remains a mystery."
"It would be amazing if we had the chance to meet that great wizard and the founding president," Wendy said, her eyes sparkling with admiration.
Makarov sighed wistfully, "Who knows? No one even knows if the founding president is still alive... Oh, right, we're almost there. Examiners, take your positions."
"Let's go, Gildarts," Feng Ye said with a casual smile. He waved at Gildarts and opened a spatial door leading to Tenrou Island, disappearing from the deck with his companion.
Seeing that Feng Ye and Gildarts had left first, Makarov turned to Mira and the others, raising a finger to signal the next part of his explanation.
"Now, let me explain the detailed rules," he began. "The first challenge is to be tackled individually. There will be five paths marked by smoke on the shore, and each path will present different obstacles. Those who successfully navigate their chosen path will proceed to the second challenge."
"You may begin your attempts now!" Makarov announced, and with that, the S-Class Mage Promotion Trial of the Fairy Tail guild officially commenced!
...
On Tenrou Island, Feng Ye stepped out of the spatial door and onto the island. He glanced in Gildarts' direction and said, "Alright, you can take your position at the first challenge."
"I won't let them pass easily," Gildarts replied with a smile. "I don't like holding back in battles, but Feng Ye, you shouldn't make the second challenge too difficult. It would be troublesome if no one could get through."
As he would be overseeing one of the paths in the first challenge, Gildarts intended to make it tough. Anyone who encountered him would be out of luck, both because of his strength and because it was the initial challenge, so a strict evaluation was reasonable. However, the same didn't apply to Feng Ye's role in the second challenge.
...
Moments later, Erza, Mira, and the others arrived at the first challenge.
Mira faced off against Byjuslo, while Erza encountered Fried. Mest was the unluckiest, coming up against Gildarts himself.
Mest's magic included Memory Magic and Spatial Movement Magic. However, the entire passage was covered in runic arrays that prohibited the use of spatial magic to bypass the challenge directly. Thus, he had no choice but to fight Gildarts head-on.
Thanks to the flexibility of his spatial magic, he managed to hold on for a moment, but ultimately, he fell to Gildarts' relentless iron fist.
Shortly after.
On the other side, Erza, Mira, and the rest also concluded their respective battles, with Mira and Erza barely scraping by with narrow victories.
Although they were only fifteen years old at the moment, much younger than Fried and Byjuslo, their strength had indeed reached the level of S-class mages, surpassing the two veterans.
Of course, due to their younger age, their advantage in strength wasn't overwhelming, and both women could only be said to have barely won.
In the end.
Erza and Mira, each bearing their wounds, walked out of the passage and followed the signs, making their way to the very center of the first layer of Tenrou Island.
Tenrou Island appeared as a regular island floating on the sea, with a mushroom cap the size of the entire island growing on it. The top of the mushroom cap formed the second layer of Tenrou Island.
At that moment, Erza and Mira arrived at the base of the Tenrou Tree, located in the center of the island, almost simultaneously.
From a distance, they could see Feng Ye leaning casually against a thick tree root, a thin blade of grass between his lips, his hands folded behind his head as he gazed at them leisurely.
"You're here," Feng Ye said, pushing himself off the tree root and standing up slowly. He offered them a light smile and then snapped his fingers, shooting out two blobs of white holy light towards the two women.
The milky-white beams enveloped Erza and Mira, and they felt a warm current flowing into their bodies from every corner, rapidly healing their wounds and restoring their depleted magic power.
Seconds later.
The white holy light faded away, and the two women were back to their peak condition.
However, despite being fully healed, neither of them relaxed their expressions. Instead, they stared at Feng Ye with utmost seriousness because they knew that this challenge set by Feng Ye would be no ordinary test! If Feng Ye hadn't healed them, they might have assumed it would be a straightforward challenge, but the fact that he restored them to full strength indicated that this trial would be exceptionally difficult!
"Alright, now for your second challenge," Feng Ye said, holding up two fingers. His demeanor was calm as he explained, "The second test is simple. All you need to do is walk from where you are to me, come give me a high-five, and you'll have passed."
"..."
Erza and Mira both looked at Feng Ye with grave expressions.
The task sounded ridiculously easy—so easy that it was almost unbelievable. But often, the simplest-sounding tasks were the most challenging to accomplish.
After a moment of solemnity, Mira glanced at Erza, her eyes flashing with a mix of confidence and provocation. "If you're too scared to go first, I'll take the lead and pass this trial, Erza!" she declared.
With that, she dashed forward, sprinting towards Feng Ye.
