Chapter 697: Being Kind to People, But What About Beasts?
Chapter 697: Being Kind to People, But What About Beasts?
Beast monsters were no different from spiritual herbs to Lu Chen. All he needed to do was go through the process of taming them, and he would gain a detailed understanding of their breed, state, and other aspects.
Having just received a fifth-grade spiritual herb seedling from Yan Jiuan, Lu Chen couldn't refuse and so he nodded in agreement.
"Alright, then. I'll take you to that secret realm now, fellow Daoist Lu," said the mild-mannered middle-aged man. After Lu Chen finished arranging everything in his cave abode, the man produced a silvery-white talisman array that radiated light, and in the blink of an eye, both their figures disappeared.
"This is the special secret realm owned by the Chamber of Commerce," he said as their figures quietly appeared from a spatial rift high in the sky.
As soon as he entered, Lu Chen sensed an unsettling aura within the spiritual energy that filled the air, causing a sense of agitation.
He looked down and saw that the secret realm consisted of varied terrain, with the occasional glimpse of fierce and sinister beast monsters flashing by.
When a beast monster spotted another, it would charge at it without hesitation, sometimes triggering a chaotic melee.
"Don't these beast monsters need to be disciplined?" Lu Chen couldn't help but ask Yan Jiuan, who was beside him.
Compared to these beasts below, the ones he had tamed back in Tianjian Sect could be considered well-behaved and obedient.
"There's something you should know, fellow Daoist Lu. These beast monsters were specifically chosen and sent to this secret realm because of their fierce nature," Yan Jiuan explained as they flew alongside each other.
"After being raised in this special secret realm for a period, their ferocity will intensify further."
"The reason for this approach is that these beast monsters have a rather unique purpose."
"The essence of some fifth-grade beast monsters is most suitable for refining into artifact spirits. Even fourth-grade beast monsters are better suited for refining certain artifacts, arrays, and even cultivating divine abilities than ordinary demon beasts."
"I've certainly broadened my horizons today, learning that beast monsters can be raised for specific purposes," Lu Chen remarked with a light nod, impressed.
"There are two Core Formation cultivators from the Chamber of Commerce and several Late-stage and Mid-stage Foundation Establishment cultivators in the secret realm. Let me introduce you to them," Yan Jiuan said after a moment.
Soon, the two arrived at a spacious plain, where they could see over a dozen cultivators approaching from a distance.
The two leading cultivators were both in the early Core Formation stage. One had a sturdy build, dark skin, and was bare-chested, with only a short skirt made of beast hide adorned with exotic beast patterns covering his lower body. The other had a string of white skulls hanging around his neck, each with a bizarre shape, seemingly made from unknown demon beasts.
"This is Fellow Daoist Pan Hong, an expert in beast language with an extraordinary ability to communicate with fierce beasts," Yan Jiuan introduced them.
"And this is Fellow Daoist Ding Yu, who hails from a prominent beast-taming sect. He has extensive experience in raising demon beasts and is intimately familiar with the habits of most demon beasts."
"As for this one, he is Fellow Daoist Lu Chen, a renowned expert in spiritual herbs and spirit beasts. He has even been hired as a guest advisor by the Chamber of Commerce."
Yan Jiuan proceeded to introduce the three of them to each other.
"Fellow Daoist Lu, your reputation precedes you!"
"It's a pleasure to meet you both," Lu Chen said.
Both men wore enthusiastic smiles on their faces. Although their cultivation levels were similar to Lu Chen's, his status as a guest advisor to the Chamber of Commerce far exceeded theirs, so they naturally wanted to establish a good relationship with him.
The group of Chamber of Commerce cultivators ventured deeper into the plain.
From their conversation, Lu Chen learned that the beast monsters in the secret realm were all exceptionally fierce and aggressive. To avoid beast attacks, their dwelling was built deep underground, fortified with multiple array formations, making it as sturdy as a golden soup.
Yan Jiuan didn't stay long in the secret realm. After giving Lu Chen a few instructions, he departed.
Lu Chen rested for half a day and gained a wealth of information about the fierce beast secret realm from Pan Hong and Ding Yu.
On the flying boat, protected by a spiritual energy shield, the burly Pan Hong turned to Lu Xuan and asked.
"I mostly stay in my cave abode and get along with people. I rarely have any combat experience."
Lu Xuan replied honestly.
"That might be a bit troublesome. When dealing with the fierce beasts in this secret realm, we can't avoid fighting them," Pan Hong said.
"However, Fellow Daoist Lu, as a Core Formation cultivator, your cultivation alone is enough to suppress the majority of fierce beasts. There's no need to worry about that."
"The task of the cultivators in this secret realm is simple: to raise these fierce beasts and maintain their ferocity," Pan Hong continued.
"They can be tamed, but not completely," he added.
"It's quite challenging to find the right balance. Many fierce beasts have perished at the hands of cultivators due to mishandling," he admitted.
"What is the acceptable rate of casualties among the fierce beasts, according to the Chamber of Commerce?" Lu Chen asked abruptly.
Pan Hong turned his head, looking somewhat surprised that Lu Chen would ask such a question.
"If the casualty rate is within ten percent, the Chamber won't ask any questions. But if it exceeds three percent, they will demand an explanation," he replied succinctly.
"How dangerous is it, then, for cultivators residing in the secret realm and tending to these fierce beasts?" Lu Chen inquired, nodding slightly to indicate his understanding.
"As far as I know, over the years, only two Foundation Establishment cultivators have perished in attacks by multiple fierce beasts. Many have been injured, though. As for Core Formation cultivators, injuries are rare since fifth-grade fierce beasts are not common here," Pan Hong explained.
"The cultivators are equipped with special artifacts to deal with fierce beasts. In case of danger, they can also call for help from fellow cultivators. Additionally, the Chamber provides defensive artifacts, talismans, and arrays, ensuring a certain level of safety," he assured.
As the flying boat traveled forward, they encountered an increasing number of fierce beasts.
"I'm in charge of this particular area, and my partner, Fellow Daoist Ding, manages another. Our methods of taming the fierce beasts are slightly different. I call this area the Pan Hong Enclosure," the burly young cultivator said, his teeth flashing in a grin, the beast hide skirt adorned with exotic beast patterns shifting as he moved.
Lu Chen turned his head and saw a colorful giant snake with a pair of wings rushing towards the flying boat like an arrow.
"Fellow Daoist Lu, stay on the boat and don't move. I'll be right back," Pan Hong said, leaving Lu Chen momentarily.
His right foot swelled to several times its original size, the muscles knotted and veins bulging, as thick as fingers. With a powerful stomp, he propelled the flying boat forward, outpacing the giant snake by several folds and delivering a forceful kick to its scaled belly.
The force of that kick was astonishing, and the giant snake lost control, tumbling through the air like a falling star before crashing to the ground, sending up a cloud of dust.
"That's a rather brute-force method of taming," Lu Chen thought to himself, witnessing the scene.
"However, for these beasts that possess only ferocity and lack intelligence, this is probably the most effective approach. No amount of gentle taming methods can compare to a good beating," he mused.
"Looks like I'll have to adapt to this Pan Hong Enclosure and learn how to deal with these fierce beasts," he added.
"Being kind to people doesn't always work with beasts."
Lu Chen stretched his body, feeling the fusion of the Azure Phoenix Bone within, the golden-tinged bones emitting a crisp sound. He felt eager to test his newfound strength.
