Chapter 693: War Machines, Firegod Pathway
Chapter 693: War Machines, Firegod Pathway
Ms. Maximus couldn't understand why Hagrid was so thrilled, nor could she fathom how he associated the ferocious dragon in front of him with a "good boy."
What well-behaved child could grow to fifteen feet tall, breathe fire, and have a temper like that? She had never seen or even heard of such a thing.
On the other side, Norbert, upon seeing Newt's Hungarian Hornet, immediately let out a low growl, and the other dragon responded in kind.
Among dragons, both the Norwegian Ridgeback and the Hungarian Hornet were notorious for their ferocity. Even a casual glance from a passerby could provoke them into a three-day, three-night battle.
This was simply their nature.
Moreover, Norbert had been beaten up by this Hungarian Hornet when he was younger, and now, seeing it again, those unpleasant memories flooded back.
Norbert's growls grew louder, as if he might pounce and bite the other dragon at any moment.
The Hungarian Hornet, perched above, looked down at Norbert with a hint of disdain on its face.
Being in its prime, it held no regard for Norbert, a mere upstart.
"Alright, Hagrid, we have serious business to attend to," Newt said, gently patting the Hungarian Hornet's wing, and it immediately turned its head away.
On the other side, Kyle also managed to calm down the restless Norbert.
"What should we do?"
"Just leave it to them," Newt replied. "Two dragons are enough to cause chaos among the giants."
As soon as he finished speaking, the Hungarian Hornet took the lead, flying towards the moving giant tribe, with Norbert close behind, spreading its wings.
The two dragons charged towards the giants, who, having no cover, immediately spotted them. They halted in their tracks, waving wooden sticks, giant axes, and other weapons at the dragons in the sky, roaring loudly.
But the dragons paid no heed to the giants' roars; no matter how loud they roared, they couldn't fly.
As soon as they approached their targets, two scorching dragon flames instantly rained down from the giants' heads, a clear show of firepower.
The already disorganized giant tribe became even more chaotic, pushing and shoving each other to reach safer ground to avoid the flames from above.
A giant, at least twenty feet tall, wearing a helmet and wielding a long-handled giant axe, roared loudly, attempting to calm the chaotic tribe, but to little avail.
Angrily, he picked up a sharpened tree trunk and hurled it at the dragon in the sky with all his might.
However, Norbert nimbly dodged it with a quick turn, then spat a large flame directly at the giant.
Soon, the giants scattered in various directions, and under the deliberate herding of the dragons, Gogok Highmagog had completely separated from the main force.
But at this moment, the giants, who had initially been in a panic, gradually calmed down. Some smarter giants, learning from Highmagog's example, began throwing their weapons with all their might.
Now, the two dragons were finding it increasingly difficult to dodge, and to make matters worse, there were also flashes of magic among them, indicating that the Death Eaters had joined the fray.
"That's enough," Newt said softly, watching the battlefield from the hilltop. "There are too many giants; this will do."
He whistled, and the Hungarian Hornet, sensing something, turned and flew back towards them, also slapping Norbert's head with its wing to remind it to retreat.
After doing this, Newt vanished from his original spot, using Apparition to appear before the giant, Gogok Highmagog.
"Stop!"
He gathered the dirt and stones on the ground, forming a fifteen-foot-tall "Mud Giant," successfully capturing Highmagog's attention.
"Are you going to wage war against wizards?" he shouted, his voice echoing through the entire valley.
"Go back, return to your tribe..."
However, in response, he received a roar and a sweeping blow from a giant axe, splitting the Mud Giant in half.
Then, two bright lights, one red and one green, shot from a distance, shattering the remaining half of the Mud Giant.
"Looks like persuasion isn't working..." Kyle appeared just in time to catch Newt, who nearly fell.
Ms. Maximus also arrived, wand in hand, cautiously scanning the surroundings.
"Are you alright, Mr. Scamander?"
"I'm fine," Newt said, sighing. "I didn't want to do this, but Giant Gogok refuses to give up the war..."
Newt waved his wand, and the stones and dirt on the ground began to gather again.
"I'll lead him elsewhere... Kyle, Ms. Maximus, help me cast the Mist Spell, the bigger the area, the better. I can't handle too many giants at once..."
"Alright!" Ms. Maximus immediately waved her wand.
A layer of white mist enveloped the valley, and the distant giants gradually became hazy.
But in the next second, a gust of wind blew, dissipating much of the mist, and they heard a frustrated voice shouting.
"What are you standing there for? Go help!"
Some giants immediately ran towards them.
Kyle, standing nearby, first froze, then quickly pulled out a round bead from the Transforming Lizard Pouch and crushed it with force.
Thick white fog erupted from the shattered bead, covering the entire valley in seconds, as if the world had suddenly lost its color. This was far more efficient than Ms. Maximus's spell.
And this mist... couldn't be dispersed by the wind.
"Oh... What is this thing?" Newt blinked, a little taken aback.
He had prepared himself for a long battle, but in the blink of an eye, Kyle had brought him such a huge surprise.
Giants' sense of direction was already poor, and this level of fog was enough to disorient them.
"Ah, the Mist Orb," Kyle said, "I bought it from Hogsmeade." He continued, "Unfortunately, this is the last one, and I'm not sure if Devish and Bangs still have any in stock."
"If they do, we should buy more," Newt said, taking a deep breath and quickly locating the direction of the giant Gogmagog based on its scent.
"Alright, you'd better stay back now."
"Wait," Kyle interrupted, whispering, "Can I take over?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, let me handle this giant," Kyle said, "Since we're preparing for war, we can't just do nothing, right?"
"No, you don't have enough experience..." Newt started to say, but before he could finish, Kyle had already waved his wand.
The stones on the ground transformed into a spear, which thrust forward with great force.
The spear seemed to hit something, emitting a dull sound.
"Roar!"
A roar came from not too far away.
"Earplugging Charm!"
To prevent the giant from locating them through sound, Kyle cast another spell.
The Earplugging Charm filled the ears of those outside a certain range with an indistinguishable buzzing sound.
Kyle had tried this spell when he was bored, and it was equally effective on Norbert because it wasn't a direct attack spell, but rather a spell that created an artificial environment, similar to the Mist Spell, except that it targeted the sense of hearing.
So the dragon's scales were completely ineffective, and it was likely the same for the giant.
It had to be said that this anti-eavesdropping spell was a perfect match for the Mist Orb.
At this moment, Newt didn't continue to object. He watched Kyle and asked, "What are you planning to do?"
"The best choice is the Fiendfyre Curse, of course," Kyle said, "When dealing with magical creatures, this spell is even more powerful than the Killing Curse."
Even Newt had to admit that Kyle was right.
For some large magical creatures, the effect of the Killing Curse wasn't particularly strong... Even the Dark Wizard from decades ago, or Dumbledore, couldn't kill an adult dragon with a single spell.
Not to mention Kyle, who wasn't even seventeen yet.
But Fiendfyre was different...
The monster created by Fiendfyre would grow stronger over time, and there was no upper limit. Given enough time, it could easily devour the giant in the entire valley.
"If possible, I wouldn't recommend you do that," Newt said, "Fiendfyre is a Dark Magic spell, and using it too many times isn't a good thing. It will gradually make you addicted to its powerful destructive power, and one day by the time you realize you've completely lost control over it."
"Of course, if the situation is critical, then it's a different story."
"I know," Kyle nodded, "So I have another plan."
He looked up and saw the giant's silhouette in the thick fog.
"Stupefy!"
Kyle waved his wand tentatively, and as expected, the Stupefy Spell bounced off the giant after hitting it.
Their skin was as hard as stone... No, even harder than stone.
However, this action angered the giant, who sensed Kyle's location. The giant swung its battle-axe, creating a whistling sound, and struck the ground less than a foot away from Kyle.
Kyle retreated while trying other spells, but none of them worked, not even the Repelling Charm, Cutting Charm, Explosion Charm, or the more powerful Sectumsempra.
Sectumsempra, which could easily cut through stone, only caused the giant to cry out in pain before it continued to swing its battle-axe as if nothing had happened.
This might also be related to Kyle not finding the right spot... But there was no choice, as the surrounding white mist restricted both the giant and Kyle.
He could barely make out the giant's rough outline and had no way to precisely locate the weak points on its body.
"Thunder Explosion!"
Kyle cast another Explosion Charm, but the giant remained unscathed. Kyle panted heavily.
After a stalemate of twenty minutes, Kyle realized that he couldn't seem to break through the giant's defense, and instead, he was the one who was losing his focus.
He had expected the giant to be hard, but not this hard. It was as if no spell could affect it.
The giant also seemed to be getting annoyed, roaring as it swung its axe, as if shooing away an irritating insect.
Kyle didn't recast the Earplugging Charm this time, mainly because by now, he wasn't sure where he was in relation to his original position. He knew that he had been running and chasing the giant for twenty minutes, and they were likely far from their initial location.
At this moment, a creature that resembled a Bludger covered in fuzz suddenly jumped out of the mist and landed on Kyle's shoulder, and Newt appeared as well.
"How does it feel..." Newt said with a hint of amusement, "It's the first time I've seen Kyle in such a flustered state, and it's quite interesting."
"This guy is like a mountain," Kyle panted again, "How were the giants defeated in the war?"
After resolving the crisis with the giants, Kyle and his group did not immediately leave the area. Instead, Newt explained, "Most of the giants were lured to a remote mountain range, larger than this one, and they didn't come out until three years after the war ended."
"What about the remaining giants...?" Kyle asked. "I remember the records mentioning giants, and Professor Dumbledore killed them, right?"
"No," Newt shook his head. "If I remember correctly, it was a group of stone statues."
"Stone statues?"
"Yes, a group of statues that were immune to spells and incredibly strong," Newt elaborated. "When the giants were about to reach Hogsmeade, these statues suddenly appeared and surrounded them outside the village."
"The ones from the school?" Kyle recalled the statues at Hogwarts that could be animated by magic, but only a few professors knew how to do so.
"Probably. Everyone who saw those statues said they looked very familiar," Newt replied Newt.
"Alright, the mist is almost gone. Leave the rest to me. We must deal with it quickly, or it will be more troublesome when the mist clears," Kyle said as he turned to Newt.
"Give me three more minutes, just three minutes," Kyle pleaded. "I just wanted to test the giant's strength; I didn't really have no way to control him."
"You want to use Fiendfyre?" Newt raised an eyebrow.
"No, I have another plan," Kyle assured him.
"Alright, then," Newt said, glancing at the thinning white mist around them. "Just three minutes, and then I'll take over."
"No problem," Kyle agreed.
Kyle immediately took out a box and instructed, "Remember to close your eyes or move further away."
"You're not going to..." Newt's mouth twitched.
Before he could finish his sentence, a scaly head emerged from the box, causing Newt to quickly avert his gaze.
The giant Gogok Highmagog also seemed to sense a threat, and he began swinging his axe with more force.
"Go! You should get some exercise too!" Kyle commanded.
At Kyle's order, the snake monster rushed out.
Meanwhile, Kyle also extended his wand.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
Highmagog's axe suddenly froze in mid-air, and he instinctive reflex as he reached out to grab it, but Kyle had already controlled the axe to fly further away.
Taking advantage of Highmagog's distraction, the snake monster had also reached his feet and bit down on his calf.
Kyle's skin, which had left him helpless, was like tofu in the face of the snake monster's fangs, easily pierced.
Highmagog let out a scream and started pounding the snake monster with his fists. The venom, which was incredibly lethal to wizards, seemed to only slow Highmagog down a little.
The heavy hammer-like punches also caused the snake monster to emit a painful hiss. It released its mouth and quickly coiled around Highmagog's body, climbing upwards while exerting force.
The fifty-foot-long snake monster couldn't easily break free, even though Highmagog was the giant leader. Instinctively, Highmagog lowered his head, trying to pull the snake monster off his body.
But as he lowered his head, he found himself staring into a pair of yellow eyes.
In an instant, Highmagog's movements froze.
The white mist gradually thinned, and even Kyle, standing at a distance, could clearly see Highmagog's feet slowly turning grayish-white, and the color continued to spread up to his ankles.
"That's it?" Kyle was a bit surprised. He had witnessed the snake monster's gaze, but only his feet were petrified... and not even truly petrified, as he could still move, just much slower than before. The grayish-white color stopped spreading at his ankles.
Kyle was a bit surprised. He had witnessed the snake monster's gaze, but only his feet were petrified... and not even truly petrified, as he could still move, just much slower than before. The grayish-white color stopped spreading at his ankles.
This guy was a born shield, and if they stood in a row, they would be the most solid defense line.
No wonder Dumbledore and Voldemort both wanted to recruit giants; they were born war machines.
And if that didn't work, they would have to use Fiendfyre.
Kyle exhaled and extended his wand.
Magical runes emerged from the tip of his wand.
The surroundings seemed to heat up, and tiny flames appeared out of thin air, dancing around Kyle.
These flames gathered and transformed into an ocean of fire, surging and churning beside Kyle.
The scorching sea of fire seemed to disperse even the thick fog, and the surroundings gradually became clearer.
Highmagog's struggles intensified.
"Come back!" Kyle said softly.
The snake monster quickly slithered down from Highmagog's body and swam back into the box nearby.
Highmagog also wanted to run, but his petrified feet weren't as agile as before, and the snake monster's venom was taking effect. He could only stagger, like a drunk man.
Kyle waved his arm, controlling the sea of fire, and finally pointed his wand at Highmagog's feet.
"Firegod Pathway!"
The raging sea of fire found an outlet and surged towards Highmagog, engulfing him.
The screams this time were more piercing than before, mixed with strange roars. Before Kyle could figure out what they meant, the sounds abruptly stopped.
When the flames dissipated, Highmagog was lying there, completely unconscious.
Kyle stumbled forward and aimed his wand at Highmagog's neck.
"Wait..."
"Godless Blade!"
