Chapter 692: The Giant's Crisis
Chapter 692: The Giant's Crisis
The next morning, Fred and George Weasley rushed back to St. Catchpole Village without even stopping for breakfast.
However, they did not find Kyle as they had hoped.
"What? He's not here?" Fred exclaimed.
"Yes, he left just ten minutes ago," Chris replied, "Mr. Scamander thought it was time for Kyle to broaden his horizons, so he took him out during this vacation."
Chris opened the door for them, "You probably haven't had breakfast yet, right?"
"No, we..." Fred started to say, but before he could finish, a unique aroma caught his attention. It smelled like grilled steak, but with an indescribable freshness, reminiscent of morning dew or freshly picked fruits.
Both Fred and George's noses were drawn as if by an invisible force, and they unconsciously walked into the house.
Chris waved his wand with a smile, and two steaming, fragrant meat dishes floated out from the kitchen, landing on empty plates on the dining table.
"Unicorn haunches, the favorite food of the Hestia Island black dragons," Chris explained with a laugh.
"This creature isn't found in Britain," he continued, "Mr. Scamander brought it specially. Try it and see how it tastes."
"Then we won't be polite," Fred and George said as they sat down at the table and couldn't resist cutting a piece of meat to taste.
It was indeed delicious, and they enjoyed it as much as the Hestia Island black dragons supposedly did.
In the blink of an eye, half of the meat dish had vanished.
"What are we here for..." Fred felt he should ask something, but the words seemed to disappear along with the meat.
Oh well, never mind. Let's eat first...
Meanwhile, Kyle had also arrived at a remote location with Newt, surrounded by a continuous range of mountains. They were currently at the summit of one of these mountains.
"South of Romania..." Newt pointed in the direction they were facing, "From here, if you keep going straight, you'll reach Bulgaria. I've walked this path several times and remember it clearly."
Kyle glanced at him and said slowly, "So this isn't an officially marked road, is it?"
"At least the Portkey we used was obtained through legitimate means," Newt assured him as he casually put a brooch into his pocket. "This is great. Back then, I struggled to get certain specific Portkeys, and I even received fake ones. I spent a lot of Galleons, but the destination turned out to be a different place."
Kyle knew he was referring to his experiences from decades ago when he delivered magical creatures worldwide. He couldn't help but ask curiously, "What happened to the person who sold you the fake Portkey? Didn't you go after him?"
"Of course, I did," Newt replied, "But I couldn't find him. That's normal because selling Portkeys is illegal, and they never stay in one place for long."
"But I heard that the person who sold you the fake Portkey became a hero in his country one day," Newt added.
Kyle tried to keep a straight face... It was rare for someone to become a national hero by selling fakes, even in the magical world. However, if it was about Portkeys and involved Newt, it didn't seem so incomprehensible.
After all, by doing so, he had saved his country from a potential disaster... The title of a hero wasn't excessive.
"How did you find out?" Kyle continued to ask, "Did he write to you?"
"No, I heard it from other Portkey sellers," Newt explained, "And it seems he even returned the Galleons to me... I'm sure the owl carrying the Galleons flew for at least a month. When it found me, it was so skinny that it was just skin and bones. Poor little thing."
Newt didn't seem keen on discussing his past experiences. He looked around as if searching for someone...
"That's strange. Dumbledore said the person responsible for meeting us would be nearby, and we'd recognize her at first sight. Where is she?"
"It seems you two are the people I've been waiting for," a deep voice suddenly spoke from behind them.
Newt turned around and had to look up to see the speaker in full.
It was Madame Maximus from Beauxbatons, and her height of nearly ten feet made her instantly recognizable.
"Oh, what an impressive Disillusionment Charm," Newt commented.
"Although I'd love to accept your compliment," Madame Maximus smiled, "I actually used the Homorphus Charm. The real me is somewhere else."
Madame Maximus smiled and said, "I doubt there's anyone in the magical world more skilled in Disillusionment Charms than you. If I used this magic, I'd surely be discovered."
Newt laughed but didn't say anything.
At this moment, Kyle also noticed something mirror-like under Madame Maximus's feet, hidden among the pile of leaves. They hadn't noticed it when they first arrived.
Soon after, with a faint explosion, the real Madame Maximus appeared. She extended her hand and said, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Scamander. Your work has always been the most important textbook in Beauxbatons."
"It's my honor," Newt replied, extending his hand as well.
"And you, Kyle, it's nice to see you again."
"The pleasure is mine, Madame Maximus."
Kyle chuckled. "I heard that you've been up to quite a bit this year, and you were even hired by the British Ministry of Magic as an exceptional case?"
"It's nothing major, just small stuff," Kyle replied.
"You're too modest..." Madame Maximus shook her head. "Normally, the French Ministry of Magic wouldn't hire a sixth-year student. I'm sure it's the same on your side."
"I really regret not knocking you out and taking you with me," she said half-jokingly. "But now, your situation is different. If I did that now, it would become an international incident.
Kyle tugged at the corner of his mouth and quickly changed the subject. "What are we here for, anyway?"
"Oh, you don't know?" Madame Maximus looked at Newt with interest. "Didn't you tell him?"
"I forgot," Newt patted his head. "Well, it's not too late to tell you now. The main reason we're here is because of the giants."
"Giants?" Kyle realized, no wonder the person in charge of receiving them was Madame Maximus, but he wondered why Hagrid wasn't there.
"Tell us about the current situation," Newt said.
"It's a bit tricky," Madame Maximus said, her voice becoming much lower. "I've been keeping an eye on their movements. Their Gog Highmarch has completely sided with the Death Eaters. Recently, he's been leading the migration of their tribe, and from the direction they're heading, their destination seems to be Britain."
"They've already started moving?" Newt frowned. "How did they move so fast?"
"Because of the Death Eaters," Madame Maximus explained. "Yesterday, a Death Eater went to the Highmarch cave, and by night, they began their migration."
"We must stop them," Newt said gravely. "Otherwise, the Muggle villages along their route will suffer."
"One has already been destroyed," Madame Maximus sighed. "I just evacuated the Muggles with Hagrid, and dozens of giants flattened the village."
At this point, Newt didn't waste any more time and immediately prepared to rush over.
But Madame Maximus signaled for him not to be too hasty.
"We've checked, and in the short term, there's no second village on their path. Hagrid is also keeping an eye on them. If anything happens, he'll contact me first."
"No, you're wrong," Newt said seriously. "Giants are inherently violent. They actively seek out and approach places with life activity instead of taking the shortest route."
Madame Maximus didn't doubt the authenticity of Newt's words. If anyone knew giants better than her, it would be the person in front of her. So, she immediately quickened her pace.
"Follow me. They're not far from here..."
On the way, Newt noticed Kyle's confusion and asked, "Are you wondering why I'm here?"
"Yes," Kyle nodded.
Logically, if Newt wanted to find help, his father, Chris, would be the first choice. They had done it this way before.
"That's because Chris is too conspicuous," Newt explained. "If he suddenly disappeared from the Ministry of Magic, the Death Eaters would likely guess that we're targeting the giants. They might send more people, including other members of the Phoenix Society."
"But you're different. Your target is relatively smaller, and even if you leave for a while, it won't attract the Death Eaters' attention."
...So, I'm just not noticeable? Kyle pouted. Although what he said was true, he still felt a bit annoyed.
Who was he looking down on...
But Kyle soon thought of another matter and quickly asked, "But yesterday at the station, a lot of people must have seen you. Is that okay?"
"Of course not," Newt smiled. "In fact, the 'me' in Britain has already headed towards the Black Forest."
"The Black Forest?"
"The place where werewolves were last seen," Newt explained. "Although their problem is also troublesome, giants are still more difficult to handle."
This work is uploaded by the 69 Book Bar.
"And the main reason I asked you to come and help isn't the most important one. With Madame Maximus and Hagrid here, it's already sufficient."
"Then why?" Kyle asked, puzzled.
"It's mainly to let you adapt to the war in advance," Newt said. "We actually discussed it together and agreed that it's very necessary to adapt before the real war arrives. Chris also agreed."
"Did my mom agree too?" Kyle asked subconsciously.
For some reason, Newt didn't answer this question. Instead, he awkwardly changed the subject. "In fact, what you're doing now is what Chris and Diana did before...
"Confronting giants, monsters, werewolves... They kept most of the dark creatures off the battlefield. Otherwise, the outcome of the last war would have been much more devastating."
"That's right," Madame Maximus at the front said seriously. "In war, dark creatures can play a much bigger role than usual... Oh, we're here."
As she spoke, another massive figure suddenly jumped out from the side, holding a large stone bow that was fully drawn.
"It's us, Hagrid, don't be nervous," said the man, loosening his grip on the bowstring as he recognized the visitor.
"Sorry, Olim," Hagrid apologized, then asked, "Has Professor Dumbledore's person arrived?"
"He's here," Ms. Maximus replied, stepping aside to reveal two people behind her.
"Mr. Scamander, I knew it was you, and Kyle..."
"Hmm? Wait..."
Hagrid was initially startled, then suddenly realized something, "Kyle, why are you here? Did you sneak along? Go back immediately!"
"No, Hagrid," Newt said, "I brought Kyle, and Professor Dumbledore agreed to it."
"What?" Hagrid exclaimed in disbelief, "But he's still a student... Are all the members of the Phoenix Society dead? How can they send an ungraduated student to such a dangerous place? Giants aren't monsters; they're far more dangerous than most Death Eaters."
"I'm well aware of that," Newt said, "But our goal this time isn't to kill all the giants. With us here, Kyle won't face any danger."
Newt spoke calmly and confidently.
Hagrid hesitated for a moment, ultimately choosing not to say anything. Instead, he looked at Kyle and reminded him, "Alright, but you must stay close to me later, and don't run around."
Kyle naturally agreed.
"Hagrid, where are they?" Ms. Maximus asked.
"Over there," Hagrid pointed to a valley not far away, "Because Death Eaters are following them, I didn't dare get too close. But it's the same from here."
The three of them looked in the direction he indicated.
Just as Hagrid said, they didn't need to be close to observe the giants' movements... because they were simply too eye-catching.
Dozens of giants moved together, and even from several miles away, they could see everything clearly.
In the distant valley, a group of giants were advancing at an incomprehensible speed. They seemed to move slowly, but each step they took was large, so their actual speed was much faster.
"What should we do now?" Hagrid asked, "The last time I came with Olim, we already had a falling out. Gogg doesn't trust us, and if we meet again, they'll definitely fight. We're no match for so many giants."
"We don't need to deal with all the giants," Newt said seriously after observing from the hilltop for a while, "Among those giants, some seem unwilling."
"That's right," Hagrid nodded, "About half of the giants are dissatisfied with Gog's rule and don't want to oppose wizards, but they are too small to resist."
"This makes it much simpler," Newt pondered for a moment, "As long as we can find a way to deal with Gog, they'll have to return to their tribe and choose a new Gog."
"As long as the new Gog refuses to cooperate with the Death Eaters, this problem will be resolved."
"That's not easy," Ms. Maximus said with concern, "And he's at least twenty feet tall. Moreover, the giants always move together, and we can't separate them. To kill him, we must deal with all the giants."
"We have to try," Newt said, then turned to Kyle, "Do you have the box?"
"Of course," Kyle replied.
Since they were going on a long journey, how could he not bring his box?
"Then good," Newt also took out a box meaningfully, "Giants and dragons are natural enemies, and the flames from dragons are what they hate the most. To create chaos among the giants, this is the best method."
"I understand," Kyle nodded and also took out a box.
Then, in Ms. Maximus's incredulous gaze, two massive adult dragons appeared out of thin air in front of her.
"Oh, Merlin..." she stared at the two enormous creatures, instinctively taking two steps back.
Hagrid, on the other hand, was the opposite. His eyes were filled with enchantment, and he even wanted to go forward and touch the scales that glistened in the sunlight.
"Hungarian Tree Bee and Norwegian Ridgeback... Norbert?"
Hagrid suddenly froze, feeling that the Norwegian Ridgeback dragon in front of him looked very familiar.
In response, a joyful snort filled with joy.
Clearly, Norbert had recognized Hagrid and greeted him habitually.
But he seemed to have forgotten that his size was no longer the same as before.
Previously, when Norbert greeted Hagrid, he could only spray a small flame, but now...
Two scorching pillars of fire descended from above. Fortunately, Ms. Maximus was quick-eyed and quick-footed, kicking Hagrid to the side just in time.
"You're crazy, Hagrid," she frowned and shouted, "This is a dragon!"
"Oh, it's fine, Olim," Hagrid brushed off the dust and stood up, "This dragon was hatched by me, I think it has no ill intent, it's just that it saw me and got too excited."
"Oh... It still remembers me," Hagrid said with a happy face.
