Chapter 691: Preparations for the Final Task
Chapter 691: Preparations for the Final Task
Time flew by, and two months passed in the blink of an eye.
However, to Ivan and the others' surprise, the Wizarding World remained unusually calm during this period. The school's classes continued as usual, and everything was peaceful.
Even in Potions class, Snape rarely picked on them anymore, though his face remained as gloomy as ever. It was unclear whether Dumbledore had assigned him some new task.
With the end of the term approaching, the young wizards in the castle grew increasingly anxious, no longer as relaxed as before. The once empty Library and Common Room were now packed with students in the afternoons.
As Champions, Ivan and Harry had even more responsibilities, as they needed to prepare for the upcoming Third Task.
Hermione, equally nervous, had been diligently organizing the spells that might be useful during the competition, ensuring that Ivan and Harry had mastered all of them.
"Professor Moody once said that the final task takes place in a large maze. They will place clever traps and dangerous magical creatures in the maze's corridors as a test... and the other Champions might also attack you!"
Hermione explained the details of the competition to Harry, suggesting that he practice the offensive spells on her list to prepare for potential battles in the maze.
Harry nodded continuously but seemed somewhat distracted throughout the conversation.
Ron patted his shoulder, offering comfort. "Stop worrying about the Dark Lord, Harry! It might just have been a nightmare. It's been over two months; if he was going to act, he would have done so by now!"
"That can't be a dream, Ron!" Harry countered. "I didn't even know who Barty Jr. was, but I heard Voldemort mention his death. Does that sound possible to you?"
"But even if it's true, there's nothing we can do about it now. You should focus more on the upcoming competition", Ron said, frowning.
Harry didn't respond, knowing Ron was right.
In fact, the prolonged calm over the past two months had gradually made him doubt the reality of that dream, fearing that his words might have caused the professors unnecessary trouble.
With this thought, Harry sighed and turned his attention to the long list in front of him. It was filled with a series of spells, most of which he had successfully mastered over the past two months, but he still struggled with advanced spells like Protego.
In contrast, Ivan, also a Champion, found the situation much easier to handle.
He had already mastered the basic spells on the list years ago, and the final exam was never a challenge for him. As a result, he was the most relaxed person in the Common Room, leisurely reading the Daily Prophet.
The incident with Barty Jr. had made Ivan more vigilant, emphasizing the importance of information. Reading the newspaper had become a daily habit to avoid missing any crucial news.
However, the recent issues of the Daily Prophet were mostly filled with reports on the Triwizard Tournament or gossip, with very little substantial content. Not even Barty Crouch's arrest was mentioned, leading Ivan to suspect that Fudge had suppressed the news.
Ivan flipped through the pages for a bit, expecting another day filled with gossip and fluff. Suddenly, one particular article caught his attention.
"You guys should take a look at this!" Ivan tossed the Daily Prophet onto the table and pointed to a column of news, speaking up.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione all leaned in curiously to read it.
"Three days ago, a Muggle was attacked by Curses?" Hermione read the news aloud, her voice tinged with shock and disbelief.
"Exactly! And it happened in that Seaside Village!" Ivan confirmed with certainty.
Although the Daily Prophet didn't explicitly mention it, Ivan could tell from the familiar background in the photos on the page.
"Peter and Voldemort must have started their plan. We should go tell Professor Dumbledore right away!" Harry dropped his book and was about to run out.
Ivan reached out and held him back, speaking with a hint of exasperation. "No need, Harry! You don't think Professor Dumbledore doesn't already know about this, do you? Don't forget, the professors have had people keeping an eye on that place!"
"Maybe it was Professor Dumbledore who drove the Dark Lord away!" Hermione speculated.
"If that's the case, the Dark Lord's plan must have been ruined, right?" Ron sounded relieved, still shaken by the news of Voldemort's plan to massacre the village to revive himself.
"It's not that simple!" Ivan shook his head solemnly. He believed that Dumbledore and Voldemort hadn't actually confronted each other yet.
Otherwise, given Voldemort's current half-dead state, he wouldn't have stood a chance against Dumbledore and wouldn't have managed to escape. The Daily Prophet also didn't mention any signs of a wizard battle at the scene.
This meant Voldemort was still lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.
For two whole months, Voldemort had been inactive, and Ivan suspected he was likely waiting for the perfect opportunity, such as the day of the final Triwizard Cup event!
As the referee of the Triwizard Tournament, Dumbledore would be at Hogwarts overseeing the entire competition on that day. Without Dumbledore as his primary adversary, Voldemort would feel much more at ease.
This recent attack might have been a test to gauge the response of the Order of the Phoenix members. Ivan wondered if they had exposed their positions, alerting Voldemort to any potential threats.
While they were discussing, an owl flew in through the window, circled the Common Room, and then flew directly toward Harry, dropping an envelope on the table.
Harry deftly opened the envelope, pulled out the parchment, and his face lit up as he read the letter.
"Who sent you the letter? What does it say?" Ivan asked, curious.
"It's from Sirius Black! He says the Ministry of Magic will invite the Champions' relatives to watch the final task, and he's coming to see it too!" Harry said, beaming with excitement.
"That's great news!" Ivan smiled. He wondered if Asia would come. She seemed to dislike Dumbledore and was often reluctant to enter Hogwarts...
