Chapter 690: Voldemort Can't Sit Still for a Moment!
Chapter 690: Voldemort Can’t Sit Still for a Moment!
"Have you or Hermione Granger mentioned Barty Jr.'s situation to anyone else recently?" Dumbledore asked.
Ivan hesitated and shook his head. He was well aware of the importance of keeping secrets, so he always exercised great caution. Hermione, too, would not have spoken about it carelessly.
Harry and Ron had only learned about Barty Crouch Jr. today, so they could hardly be considered fully informed before that.
"Albus, it can't be these kids' fault!" Mad-Eye Moody frowned and said in a deep voice. "Barty Jr. only died a week ago. Even if some students had heard about it, the news couldn’t have spread to that person so quickly."
Voldemort was now an isolated figure with very limited sources of information. Therefore, someone must have deliberately relayed the news to him.
"Could the Ministry of Magic have leaked it?" Ivan immediately thought of that possibility.
To him, the Ministry's intelligence network was as leaky as a sieve. For example, the Triwizard Cup, which was supposed to be a secret event this year, was known to many before the school year even began. Dawgert had even deduced from some intelligence that one of the tasks might involve dragons...
So Ivan suspected that a high-ranking official in the Ministry might have defected to Voldemort, becoming the Dark Lord's inside man.
However, just as Ivan was thinking this, Dumbledore dismissed the idea. "That's not possible. I only told Fudge about Barty Jr. tonight."
"That's odd. If that's the case, then only a few of us should know about this..." Mad-Eye Moody raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over Ivan, Harry, and the others, then turning back to Dumbledore. "Could it have been Barty? Or did he tell someone?"
Ivan also thought this was a possibility. Initially, only Dumbledore, Mad-Eye Moody, Hermione, Crouch, and himself knew about it. If it wasn’t one of them, it had to be Crouch!
"I believe Barty wouldn’t have disclosed it easily! Perhaps Voldemort placed some kind of warning magic on Barty Jr. to alert him to everything..." Dumbledore interrupted their speculation. The situation was urgent, and they needed to stay united rather than indulge in baseless suspicion!
"Regardless, the most important thing now is to find out the location of that village and prevent the tragedy from happening", Dumbledore added.
"But Britain is so large. How do we determine which village the Dark Lord is targeting?" Ron asked, puzzled.
Harry knew the Dark Lord was planning an attack but had no idea where the specific village was, not even a single clue. There was no way to start looking.
"Voldemort is currently restricted in his movements and hasn’t fully regained his strength. It won’t be easy for him to wipe out an entire Muggle village... So he’ll have to choose a suitable location to avoid causing widespread chaos that could disrupt his rituals!" Ivan muttered to himself.
Muggles aren’t fools; they know how to resist and escape when faced with danger. Even a thousand pigs, if thrown into a village, wouldn’t be killed off in a few days.
Mad-Eye Moody found this reasoning sound and continued along Ivan’s line of thought. "So Voldemort will likely choose a small, remote village with a limited number of Muggles, probably a few dozen to a hundred. This way, we can rule out most locations!"
Dumbledore nodded, "There's one more thing to consider: Tom has a particular fondness for nostalgia. This narrows down the likely locations he might target for an attack!"
"You mean the village near the cave?" Ivan whistled, easily guessing the place Dumbledore was referring to.
But knowing this only made it more shocking. Any person with a shred of conscience wouldn't be so depraved as to target the place where they played as a child.
However, Voldemort was clearly an exception. He had even tried to murder his childhood playmates near that village.
"Exactly. If Voldemort is planning a massacre, this is the most likely place!" Dumbledore said gravely.
He had visited the village recently while investigating the Horcrux. The village was sparsely populated, situated by the sea, and surrounded by mountains and cliffs. Even if something horrific happened, the Muggle government would take some time to respond.
With this in mind, Dumbledore turned to Mad-Eye Moody. "Alastor, since we can't count on Cornelius, we'll have to take matters into our own hands."
"It's about time, Albus!" Mad-Eye Moody grinned. "Shall I go and gather everyone?"
"No need. I'll have Fawkes handle the notifications", Dumbledore shook his head. Mad-Eye Moody was still the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts and had classes to prepare for. Such a minor task could be handled by the phoenix.
"Professor Dumbledore, what about us? What should we do?" Harry, who had been unable to get a word in, quickly asked.
"Your job is to stay at the school and protect yourselves!" Dumbledore replied earnestly.
"But..." Harry opened his mouth to protest.
"Your safety is just as important as protecting that village, Harry!" Dumbledore interrupted. "We can't be certain if Voldemort is really planning a massacre or if it's just a diversion. We need to be prepared for both possibilities..."
Without waiting for Harry's response, Dumbledore then instructed Ivan and the others to keep the night's events confidential to avoid any leaks.
"Professors, can I tell Hermione?" Ivan suddenly asked, thinking that with Hermione's intelligence, she would likely find out from Harry and Ron anyway.
"Of course, Hermione Granger is someone we can trust!" Dumbledore nodded.
...
Ten minutes later, Ivan, Harry, and Ron emerged from the Headmaster's Office and made their way to the Gryffindor Common Room.
All three wore worried expressions. Harry and Ron were still reeling from the shock of Voldemort's plan to massacre the village to resurrect himself.
Ivan sighed helplessly, realizing that his peaceful school life was about to come to an end. Voldemort really couldn't stay quiet for a moment!
