Chapter 69: The Search
Upon hearing Chen Chuan's words, Cheng Zitong appeared delighted and said, "Exactly! That's why you're a natural-born member of the Insight School!"
Chen Chuan smiled and continued to flip through the documents in his hand.
Cheng Zitong seemed a bit thirsty at the moment, so he picked up the water on the desk and took a sip. Then, pointing at the documents, he said, "The client's request is to capture a Well Baby, and the reward is quite high. No one is competing for it, and it doesn't seem too dangerous. Since we still have time now, you can try to catch it tonight."
Chen Chuan thought, "It seems there's more than one of these things, and I'm not even sure if it's the legendary creature from the tales. But I'll find out once I see it."
He was indeed very interested in such matters.
Although the task could only be carried out at night, he still needed to check the location during the day, as the information was from a few years ago, and it might not be accurate now. He needed to verify it himself.
Since the next day was a rest day, he decided to stay in the dormitory that night, considering the necessary preparations and specific plans. He also trained a bit and went to bed when it was time.
The next day, he first visited his aunt's house, borrowed a Yearfuli brand watch from her, took the bicycle that was kept there, and then went out to buy some tools. After that, he rode towards the northern part of the city.
After riding for about three quarters of an hour, he arrived at the old city in the north.
Cheng Zitong wasn't entirely unfamiliar with this area, as his previous life's parents' house was located further north from here. It was in this area that he had lost his life in his previous life.
Since he didn't know the exact cause of his previous life's death, he had avoided returning to that place to prevent unnecessary danger.
This area was filled with old houses, some dating back more than sixty years, and even before the establishment of the Great Shun Republic. It had been nearly a hundred years, and this area used to be the old Yangzhi Town. After the Great Expansion, the new Yangzhi City was established as a logistics center.
The northwestern part of Yangzhi City, including the suburbs and villages like Zangshan to the north are no longer.
Cheng Zitong was relieved to hear this. The main concern was the absence of HTML files, which could potentially carry malicious code.
Chen Chuan decided on his course of action and rode his bike to a nearby martial arts gym, where he could train and pass the time.
In this area, the most troublesome aspect at night was the various gangs. Most shops would close early, but the gym remained open and hosted martial arts tournaments that attracted both overt and covert gang members. It was the perfect place for Chen Chuan to wait until the right moment.
Around 8:30 pm, Chen Chuan left the gym, noticing the stark contrast between the bustling gym and the quiet streets outside. The only movement came from the swaying tree branches with their dangling dead leaves, illuminated by the street lamps below. There were hardly any pedestrians in sight.
Adjusting his hat, Chen Chuan retrieved his bike and rode towards the well's location.
After five or six minutes, he approached the alley where the well was located, illuminated by a solitary street lamp. Suddenly, he noticed a man walking towards him from across the street.
The man appeared strong and wore a mask and a baseball cap. He had been walking briskly, but upon noticing Chen Chuan, he seemed to pay extra attention to his satchel. He hesitated for a moment, adjusted his hat, and then hurriedly turned down a side street.
Chen Chuan could tell from the man's gait and physique that he had received training, possibly from a gang. However, this was of no concern to Chen Chuan. He dismounted his bike and pushed it into the dimly lit alley, using a flashlight to guide his way.
As he ventured further, he slowed down, noticing a group of seven or eight burly men standing around the well. They were smoking, holding clubs, daggers, and flashlights, one of which was pointed directly at him. Chen Chuan squinted slightly in response.
"Brother Tian, it's that kid from earlier today!"
Brother Tian, slightly annoyed, shouted, "Kid, I knew you were trouble from this morning. I came here to hide, but you keep showing up. I didn't want to fight, but you're just asking for it. It's your bad luck!"
Chen Chuan sighed softly, "It's hard to say who's unlucky."
Brother Tian roared, "Get him!"
Chen Chuan gently pushed his bike to the side, took off his hat, and tossed it into the basket. He then strode forward, loosening up his shoulders and wrists as he walked.
A gang member swung a stick at him, but Chen Chuan effortlessly dodged it with a slight head turn and pushed the attacker's chest, sending him flying backward and knocking down several people behind him.
Chen Chuan stepped out of the alley, and as a man with a knife lunged at him from the side, Chen Chuan spun around and stomped on the man's shin, causing a loud crack. The man screamed in agony, clutching his twisted leg as he fell to the ground.
Another gang member swung a club at Chen Chuan, but he deftly caught it and pushed it downward, breaking it in half and sending the attacker to the ground, clutching his chest in pain.
The remaining gang members froze, shrinking back in fear. It was clear that Chen Chuan was a skilled fighter, and engaging him would only result in a beating.
Brother Tian, seeing no one else daring to move, was now in a difficult position. He clenched his teeth and raised his saber, charging towards Chen Chuan.
But before his blade could land, Chen Chuan moved swiftly, and the gang leader felt darkness envelop him.
The gang members watched in shock as their leader was kicked in the head by Chen Chuan, sending him flying sideways and landing motionlessly on the ground.
At this point, the rest of the gang members decided to flee, abandoning their leader and their weapons as they ran down the alley.
Chen Chuan paid them no mind. He had already wasted enough time and couldn't afford further delays.
Approaching the well, he grabbed the pulley and began to turn it. However, he immediately sensed something amiss—the weight below felt lighter than expected. After a moment's thought, he continued to turn the pulley, and when the bucket reached the top, he discovered several sealed plastic bags inside, each containing box-shaped objects.
Chen Chuan wondered, "Are these... medicines?"
