Chapter 69: Reducing Bones to Ashes
Chapter 69: Reducing Bones to Ashes
Three slashes executed in an instant—this was fundamentally different from a single slash that split into three.
The former could be called speed. Even if someone claimed to slash three times "simultaneously", it still fell within the realm of speed.
But Kuro’s slash was genuine simultaneity. The moment his blade left the sheath, it became three blades.
“Y-y-y-y-y-you!”
Lida’s eyes widened as she pointed a trembling finger at Kuro, her voice shaking.
“As expected! You’re a total freak to pull off something like this!”
“It’s nothing really,” Kuro replied casually, unimpressed by his own Swallow Return technique. “It’s just three slashes. Look at Roronoa Zoro—he uses a three-sword style. His ‘Flying Slash’ moves are similar, and there’s even an eight-sword style. What’s so amazing about this?”
“This isn’t the same at all! Do you think I’m blind?!” Lida shot Kuro a glare.
Others might not understand, but she certainly could!
This was a divine-level slash!
How could a mere Bullet Swallow compare to the brilliance and terror of this strike?!
Klah didn’t see it. To him, this slash simply split into three—a strange phenomenon, but nothing more.
A slash like this? If he faced it, he’d just die. Nothing special.
But for Lida, who had witnessed most of Kuro’s techniques, even without expertise in unarmed combat or swordsmanship, she could still recognize its brilliance.
This wasn’t just a single slash becoming three—it also sealed the enemy’s escape routes. Once engaged, the opponent had no chance of evading.
This fell within the realm of ‘abilities.’
Kuro had reached the level of ‘abilities’ purely through swordsmanship alone!
Calling this man a freak felt like an insult to the word.
“Whatever. Doesn’t matter.”
Kuro scratched his head, gazing down at Bullet Swallow’s corpse. The body gradually softened, reverting to Buggy’s form as the pirate’s life faded.
But just to be safe…
Kuro swung his blade, severing Buggy’s head. With a few more slashes, he reduced the body to pieces. Then he unleashed a wisp of blade qi—a violent, surging force that turned Buggy’s remains to ash.
“What are you doing?” Lida asked.
“Precautions. Paramecia types always have weird abilities,” Kuro said.
This was called “adding a finishing blow”?
Lida watched the ashes drifting from the sky, her lips twitching. Suddenly, she felt pity for this pirate worth over 300 million.
Kuro’s eyes flickered with crimson as he activated Observation Haki, enveloping the entire island. Confirming Buggy’s presence had vanished, he nodded. “Alright, let’s go back.”
Lida fell silent. Did he really need to do this? Even using Observation Haki to double-check?
The ashes couldn’t possibly reassemble into a living person!
If that pirate had survived, he’d probably cry tears of gratitude knowing Kuro treated him this seriously.
As the group returned to camp, the battlefield fell silent, bathed only by moonlight.
The crescent moon in the sky was the sole witness.
The moon cycled through its phases, sinking beyond the ocean’s horizon as the sun rose to mark dawn.
Kuro returned to his ship and set course for Base 153.
Kas was a fake. He needed to find the real one.
Otherwise, there’d be no peace in the East Blue.
Day turned to night, night to day. When the moon climbed high again, the area on Stone Island where ashes had settled began to stir. The earth suddenly bubbled, spewing forth a mass of soft mud. It coalesced, reforming into Buggy’s shape.
“Hahahaha—”
Buggy collapsed to his knees, gasping for breath.
Blood oozed from his body, covering countless slash wounds.
“So close… so close to death…”
The Mimic Fruit was powerful. Beyond transforming into remembered objects, it had one ultimate trump card—‘Disguised Self.’
This wasn’t simple mimicry. By becoming himself, he could detach that form. The original body would vanish, reappearing at the original location after a day.
‘Faux Body’—the pinnacle of the Mimic Fruit’s abilities.
This was his last resort, usable only once.
After decades of possessing the fruit, today was the first—and last—time he revealed it.
When Kuro’s incomprehensible swordplay struck, Buggy activated Faux Body.
He had planned to let the Navy take his false body, but hadn’t expected Kuro to actually go straight for the kill.
Didn’t that bastard Kuro need his 300-million bounty body for a promotion?!
Killing him outright was bad enough—why slash him repeatedly?! And then that final wisp slash?!
Though his true body hid, the wisp slash still struck his existence, inflicting damage. Combined with the injuries from transforming into Bullet Swallow, he nearly died.
“Damned bastard!”
Buggy rolled onto his back, panting furiously. “I’ll remember you, Lucius Kro!”
No matter what, he survived.
That Kuro dared treat him this way? He’d make sure Kuro couldn’t stay in the Navy!
If he impersonated Kuro and caused trouble… how miserable would that make him?! And if the World Government got involved, that’d be perfect!
After resting, Buggy felt his strength return. Transforming into a bird, he soared into the distance.
……
After a day and night’s journey, Kuro returned to Base 153.
This time, he finally found Kas.
“Kas!!”
As the warship docked, Kuro spotted a patrolling Navy officer on the street—Kas.
With a shout, he charged forward. But Kas, seeing him, reacted even more excitedly. The bearded man dashed toward Kuro, snapped a crisp salute, and grabbed his hand.
“Kuro-san! It’s really you, Mr. Kuro!”
The mix of excitement and reverence in his tone made Kuro’s rehearsed scolding die in his throat.
That fiery, admiring gaze—it was genuine.
Kuro didn’t even need Observation Haki to confirm. This hotheaded idiot was definitely Kas.
Kas beamed, “Mr. Kuro! When I returned, I heard you came to the East Blue and were looking for me. I thought we missed each other, so I stayed at the base, waiting for you to come back!”
“Ahh, Kas. Long time no see.”
Kuro discreetly tried to pull his hand free but found it locked in Kas’s iron grip.
Kas clung like a son seeing his father rise from the grave after decades in the tomb.
Was he really this excited?
“Mr. Kuro! While you were away from the East Blue, I worked hard to spread your ideals. It’s already showing results! Many Navy officers, inspired by your relentless battles against pirates, have become more determined themselves. All thanks to your ideals!”
Kuro’s expression hardened. “Speaking of that… I need to talk to you about the justice path.”
That’s exactly why I came looking for you!
