Chapter 682: It Seems Professor Moody Has Finally Gone Mad!
"I saw you fighting with Mad-Eye Moody and Barty Jr., so I begged Professor Dumbledore for help. But he said that if he intervened rashly, it might disturb your enjoyment, and you would certainly be very unhappy", Hermione explained.
No, I would have been overjoyed!
Ivan had no idea how to respond. He wasn't some battle-hungry madman or obsessed wizard; where did he get the enthusiasm for fighting?
However, Ivan understood that Dumbledore was just making an excuse. After all, the old professors were most interested in secretly "guiding" their students or saying cryptic things to let others "realize" their meanings over time.
Perhaps it was a bad habit from decades of being professors and the headmaster.
After saying goodbye to Hermione, Ivan tiptoed back to the boys' dormitory.
By now, it was just starting to get light, but the others in the dormitory were still sound asleep. Seamus was sprawled out, mumbling in his sleep, and Ron's snores echoed through the room.
Ivan, exhausted from the night's activities, took off his shoes and socks and climbed into bed, reflecting on the night's events.
Barty Jr. was dead, Harry was safe, and Voldemort's meticulous plans had been thoroughly disrupted. This string of good news allowed Ivan, who had been worried about the Dark Lord's resurrection, to breathe a sigh of relief.
Yet, a lingering shadow still clouded Ivan's mind as he recalled Trelawney's prophecy.
"The darkness draws near, shadows will cover the sky, the Death Eaters will break free, and the Wizarding World will face great changes."
Thinking about it, Ivan furrowed his brow. According to Harry's description, this was another true prophecy.
But now that he had killed Barty Jr., Voldemort shouldn't be able to resurrect himself. Would the prophecy's outcome change?
Ivan felt a twinge of unease but then shook his head, chiding himself. He remembered that in the original timeline, Peter Pettigrew had mentioned that Voldemort's resurrection rituals didn't necessarily require Harry's blood.
Voldemort's obsession with this point was due to the significant setback he had suffered at Harry's hands in the past. He wanted to avoid the protective magic surrounding Harry and planned to kill him in front of his traitors on the day of his resurrection to reassert his authority.
Regardless, with Barty Jr. dead, Voldemort would have to rethink his resurrection plans, at least buying Ivan some time.
And time was exactly what he lacked!
Ivan's thoughts grew hazy as fatigue washed over him, and he soon drifted into a deep sleep.
...
The next morning.
After barely getting a few hours of sleep, Ivan was woken up by Ron, yawning. They quickly had breakfast and headed to their Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
Initially, when Ivan saw the schedule, his first thought was to return to the dormitory for a quick nap.
After all, Mad-Eye Moody had just been beaten up and had been discussing matters with Dumbledore until the early hours of the morning. Any normal person would take a day off.
However, Mad-Eye Moody was far from normal, so he appeared in class that morning, acting as if nothing had happened, and proceeded to teach them Defense Against the Dark Arts.
It wasn't until near the end of the class that Mad-Eye Moody revealed his true intentions.
He forced every young wizard, except Ivan and Hermione, to stand up and find out what was different about him today compared to his usual self within a set time limit.
If you got anything wrong, Mad-Eye Moody wouldn't hesitate to give you a stern reprimand, and a few of the girls were nearly in tears.
"You have truly disappointed me. There were so many differences, but only Neville noticed that my clothes were dirty and torn. Didn't anyone see the new scars on my arm, or that I've changed my wooden leg?"
Mad-Eye Moody angrily shouted, spittle flying onto Seamus's face.
He hadn't even washed his face this morning, rushing over to maintain his current state to teach them a lesson. Unfortunately, the students' reactions left him deeply disappointed—no one had truly noticed his abnormalities.
As he spoke, Mad-Eye Moody showed everyone his new leg, still made of wood but now a beautiful reddish-brown color.
"I expect everyone to submit a report at least five feet long next class, detailing those differences. Do you understand?" Mad-Eye Moody pounded the table and roared.
...
"It looks like Professor Moody has finally gone mad!" As soon as they stepped out of the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Ron couldn't wait to voice his thoughts, then continued with a gloomy tone.
"We're not Muggle detectives. Who would notice if he changed his wooden leg today?"
Harry nodded in agreement.
Hermione, standing nearby, couldn't bear to watch any longer and immediately countered. "Professor Moody is right! You all lack observational skills. If you paid more attention, you would have noticed that the hem of Professor Moody's robes was stained with blood. This description..."
Hermione paused, unsure if she should reveal what happened last night. Professor Dumbledore hadn't asked them to keep it a secret, but he also hadn't given them permission to share it.
Hearing Hermione mention blood, Harry and Ron instantly perked up, eagerly asking, "What about the description?"
Hermione hesitated, glancing at Ivan. Seeing that he didn't stop her, she glared at the two of them in frustration and said, "Can't you see? This description suggests that Professor Moody has just been in a battle!"
"A battle?" Harry said, puzzled.
Ron was stunned for a moment before suddenly exclaiming, "Did he go after Snape last night?"
Ivan rolled his eyes, wondering why they always associated things with Snape.
"It could be Karkaroff!" Harry said confidently.
Apart from Snape, Karkaroff was the most likely suspect. At the Christmas Ball, Ginny had overheard a conversation between Snape and Karkaroff, and it seemed they were discussing something.
"It's neither!" Hermione glared at them, dismissing their guesses.
This only made Harry and Ron more confused, and they quickly pressed for more information.
"Can't you just stop asking? Professor Dumbledore will tell us in a few days", Hermione said irritably, already regretting having mentioned it.
Ivan also remained silent.
With Barty Crouch Jr. just defeated, he wasn't sure whether Dumbledore planned to keep the news secret to mislead Voldemort and trace more clues, or to announce it publicly. So, maintaining secrecy was essential for now.
After all, Ron was a big mouth, and Harry had the potential to leak information. Who knew when these two might spill the beans...
