Chapter 681: Registration
Chapter 681: Registration
Lu Jiaxin had seen it played out on television countless times before—the male lead secretly arranging a proposal, moving the female lead to tears, who would then happily accept amidst cheers and applause. Now, as the protagonist of her own love story, she felt not excitement or tears of joy, but a deep sense of contentment.
Cheers erupted around her, with some even whistling in celebration. Only Qian Xiaoxiao whispered on their way back that the proposal lacked creativity and that she had seen it many times on TV.
Lu Jiaxin didn't mind. Smiling, she said, "It's not about the gesture, but the thought that counts."
There were no perfect men in this world, just as there were no perfect women. If they were to spend a lifetime together, they must learn to accommodate and understand each other. Demanding everything from the other would only lead to a short-lived relationship.
Qian Xiaoxiao was left speechless.
During their trip to the Maldives, Lu Jiaxin learned to drive a motorboat and a yacht, and even went diving with Nie Zhan to catch fish. It was incredibly fun.
Happy days always flew by, and a week passed in the blink of an eye. As they rode to the airport, Lu Jiaxin said, "I really don't want to go back. Nie Zhan, I'm thinking of retiring in a couple of years."
Knowing her distaste for work, Nie Zhan smiled and said, "Sure, I can help manage the company when the time comes."
The empire he had built with Jiaxin would surely be passed on to their children one day. However, he wouldn't consider retirement until their heir was ready to stand on their own. But for now, it was too early to discuss such matters; they weren't even married yet, let alone had children.
The day they returned to Hong Kong City, Nie Zhan eagerly submitted their marriage application. In Hong Kong, registrations were scheduled, and they would have to wait for their turn to come around.
The next morning, Lu Jiaxin received a call from Zong Shimen. "Jiaxin, did Nie Zhan propose to you during your trip to the Maldives?"
Lu Jiaxin smiled and briefly recounted the proposal. "Xiaoxiao said it was unoriginal and that she'd seen it done on TV several times. He's just not the romantic type."
Zong Shimen laughed. "Do you know how your brother-in-law proposed to me?"
Jiaxin didn't, as she had never asked Zong Shimen about it, and Nie Zhan had never mentioned it either.
"Hu Zhifeng sure knew how to put on a show," Zong Shimen said. "The first time was at a restaurant. He hid the ring in a small cake, but I had just graduated from university and wanted to focus on my career, so I turned him down. The second time was on a night by the beach. He set off fireworks and proposed under the sparkling sky, but I still had my concerns, so I refused again. The third time, we returned to our alma mater and he proposed on campus. I was so touched that I finally accepted."
No doubt, the beach proposal was Hu Zhifeng's idea.
Zong Shimen continued, "He swept me off my feet with his sweet words during the proposal, but not a single promise was kept after we married. Looking back, someone like Nie Zhan, who's sincere and down-to-earth, is much better."
Putting aside other things, Nie Zhan had given a generous betrothal gift and had always helped Jiaxin make money. Of course, the two of them were a formidable pair in the business world, conquering every challenge that came their way.
Lu Jiaxin smiled and said, "I think so, too. He's devoted in our relationship, helps me make money, and tolerates my bad habits. That's more than enough."
Even when they were dating, she knew that Nie Zhan wasn't the type to be romantic or whisper sweet nothings. It would be selfish to expect something he couldn't deliver.
She had her fair share of flaws, too, but Nie Zhan had never asked her to change! Besides, they had enjoyed their vacation together, and that was what mattered most.
"So, when are you two planning to tie the knot?" Zong Shimen asked.
"We haven't set a date yet," Lu Jiaxin said. "We'll need to find an auspicious day, but we're thinking of the end of this year or sometime next year."
"We agreed to keep the engagement simple, but we'll go all out for the wedding."
When the time came for them to tie the knot, they would not only invite their friends and business associates but also prominent figures from all walks of life, and the banquet would consist of no fewer than a hundred tables. There were also the wedding gown, the groom's suit, the groomsmen's and bridesmaids' attire, and a host of other details to attend to. It would take at least three to five months to prepare for such an event.
Zong Shimen felt that they should go all out. A woman only gets married once in her life, and if she has the means, she should definitely do it in style, even if it means a little more work.
After discussing the proposal, Zong Shimen brought up the topic of Nie Manlin again. "Your mother-in-law is getting a divorce again. I heard she's planning to settle back in Hong Kong City."
"When did this happen?" Lu Jiaxin asked.
"You didn't know?"
Lu Jiaxin truly had no idea. Smiling, she said, "Nie Zhan didn't tell me. You know I just got back from the Maldives today."
Zong Shimen had heard the news from a friend who was a relative of Nie Jingwen's wife. "I think Nie Zhan didn't want to affect your mood, so he didn't tell you. But your mother-in-law sure knows how to stir up trouble. At fifty years old, she went all out to have a child for that man, and now, just two years later, she's creating a fuss about getting a divorce."
"Your mother-in-law may be in her fifties, but she's still unpredictable. If she says she's returning to Hong Kong City, she probably won't stay for long. I heard the man doesn't want the child, and if she tries to dump the kid on you, don't you dare take him in."
Lu Jiaxin appreciated her concern. Smiling, she said, "The Nie family will indulge her, but I won't. If she dares to leave the child with me, I'll send him away so that she'll never see him again."
After saying this, she felt she might have spoken too harshly. "When her eldest daughter was dying of leukemia, she didn't bat an eyelid. People like her only care about themselves; their children are either a guarantee or a burden to them."
Those who were useful, like Nie Zhan, the son of a billionaire, were her guarantee for the rest of her life. Those who were useless, like Mina and her brother, were a burden to be discarded at any time.
Zong Shimen despised Nie Manlin. "If you want to pursue a romantic love, that's fine. But when you were so deeply in love that you wanted to have a child, and now that the passion has faded and you want to separate, you're treating the child like an old doll and discarding him. That's worse than a beast."
Lu Jiaxin arrived home half an hour before Nie Zhan that evening. As soon as she saw him, she asked, "Your mother is getting a divorce again. Why didn't you tell me about this?"
"My grandfather called the day before we left," Nie Zhan explained. "He wanted me to handle it, but I refused. I didn't want it to affect your mood, so I didn't mention it."
Lu Jiaxin smiled and asked, "Were you worried it would affect my vacation mood, or were you afraid I wouldn't accept your proposal because of this?"
Nie Zhan didn't deny it, indicating that both were true. "Don't worry, I won't get involved in her matters from now on."
Lu Jiaxin had no intention of interfering. "I heard the man doesn't want the child. Is she planning to bring him back here?"
Nie Zhan nodded. "She called me today and said she wanted to bring the child back to Hong Kong City. I suggested she send him away. With the way she is, she won't be able to raise him properly."
Lu Jiaxin was surprised by his firmness. "Won't your mother be furious?"
Nie Zhan shrugged it off. "I don't know. I hung up before she could start yelling at me."
From the time he graduated from university until now, he had been cleaning up her messes, and he was truly tired of it.
Lu Jiaxin shook her head. "It's easy to say, but it's difficult to do."
She also wanted to cut ties with Lu Hongjun, but reality didn't allow it. Thankfully, they were thousands of miles apart, and out of sight, out of mind. If she had to see him every day, she wouldn't be able to stand it.
