Chapter 681: It Was All a Misunderstanding!
Chapter 681: It Was All a Misunderstanding!
"Did I get it wrong? It was the night before the first match. If you weren't following me, what were you doing out so late?" Mad-Eye Moody asked, eyeing Ivan's reaction with a curious look.
"I think you've misunderstood, Professor Moody. That night, I received a message from Hagrid, so Harry and I went to the Forbidden Forest to see the dragon", Ivan shrugged and explained.
Ivan also recalled what had happened that night. After returning from the Forbidden Forest, he had gone to the kitchen to grab a midnight snack and ran into Mad-Eye Moody there by chance.
"No wonder..." Moody muttered to himself. When they first met, he had found Ivan's reaction strange, but Ivan's persistent questioning about various matters only made him more convinced that Ivan was following him that night.
"By the way, Professor, were you really investigating Karkaroff that night?" Ivan suddenly asked.
"Of course not. You should be able to guess the reason, no need for me to explain it", Moody shook his head and said in a low voice.
That night, he had gone to the kitchen as usual to prepare a meal for Barty Crouch Jr. However, he noticed Ivan's suspicion and happened to see Karkaroff with his magical eye, so he decided to use this as an excuse to leave.
Ivan also remembered this and was speechless. It turned out that both of them had been misinterpreting the situation that night!
Hermione, who was listening to their conversation, was completely lost, while Dumbledore, curious, looked at the two and asked, "Alastor… Hals, it seems something interesting happened recently. Could you explain more clearly?"
Mad-Eye Moody had no intention of keeping it a secret and promptly explained the entire situation. He then continued, "In short, I told Barty Crouch Jr. about this, and he, like me, mistakenly thought that Hals had some crucial leads and was investigating us. So, he ordered me to divert your attention to Crouch to allay your suspicions about me."
"Wasn't he worried that I might find more clues from Mr. Crouch?" Ivan rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
"Barty Jr. didn't expect you to be so capable. He assumed you wouldn't find anything", Mad-Eye Moody rolled his eyes. "You should know that his father, Barty Crouch, is not an easy opponent. Barty Jr. hoped to distract you by involving you in a detective game."
"And when the time was right, he planned to use your hands to send his father to Azkaban!" Mad-Eye Moody added.
Having "worked" with Barty Crouch Jr. for half a year, Moody knew all too well how much Barty Jr. despised his father, to the point of wanting to make Crouch experience the same fate of being locked up with Dementors in Azkaban.
Listening to Mad-Eye Moody's account, Ivan was astonished. He hadn't realized that Barty Jr. had so many schemes going on behind the scenes.
If it weren't for his plot-awareness, his suspicion of Mad-Eye Moody, and the help of the Marauder's Map, he might have been manipulated into a complete circle.
In a sense, Barty Crouch Jr. died a rather frustrating death.
"Quite an ingenious plan… I never would have guessed that Barty Jr. had the talent for plotting such schemes when he first came to Hogwarts", Dumbledore said with interest.
"Indeed, he did have some talent." Mad-Eye Moody also nodded. Barty Jr.'s various schemes were quite clever, but unfortunately, he met a monster, and all his plans came to nothing.
Ivan only took a few minutes to easily uncover Crouch's secrets, and Dumbledore did not send Crouch to Azkaban as Barty Jr. had imagined.
"You can't imagine how furious Barty Jr. was when he learned this news..." Mad-Eye Moody recalled, speaking with a mocking tone.
"No, I think we all felt the intensity of that anger tonight..." Ivan looked at the broken, shrouded corpse and sarcastically remarked.
Only a wizard who was sufficiently enraged would cast a spell to blow himself up.
Dumbledore also glanced at Barty Jr.'s remains and quickly followed up, "Alastor, did Barty Jr. tell you why Voldemort wanted Harry?"
"They were preparing some kind of Dark Magic ritual that required Harry", Mad-Eye Moody hesitated, saying. Although he had been under the Imperius Curse, he was only considered a half-insider and couldn't gather too much confidential information.
"Rituals, huh?" Dumbledore murmured, pausing for a moment before speaking to Mad-Eye Moody. "Alastor, could you bring Barty here? I have some questions to ask him, and I should also inform him that we've found his son."
Mad-Eye Moody agreed, using a Transfiguration spell to create a temporary prosthetic leg. Then, leaning on his wand, he left.
Dumbledore then turned to Ivan and Hermione, speaking gently. "Ivan, Hermione Granger, I think after a busy night, it's time for you both to get some rest."
"Good night, Professor Dumbledore", Ivan understood that Dumbledore was dismissing them and didn't linger, turning to leave with Hermione.
As they exited the Headmaster's Office, the massive stone statue behind them slowly descended with a dull thud, sealing the entrance.
Ivan was about to head straight back to the dormitory when Hermione suddenly hugged him.
"What's wrong, Hermione?" Ivan was taken aback.
"Are you okay, Ivan? Are you hurt? Should we go to the Hospital Wing to get you checked out?" Hermione asked anxiously, then suddenly remembered and muttered, "Oh, I almost forgot, the Hospital Wing isn't open yet."
"I'm fine, nothing at all. But isn't it a bit late to ask these questions now?" Ivan said with a mix of amusement and exasperation.
Hermione pursed her lips and didn't respond. With Dumbledore and Mad-Eye Moody around, and seeing Ivan standing there unharmed with no torn clothes, she naturally couldn't show too much concern.
Ivan guessed what the young witch was thinking and didn't press the matter, reassuring her multiple times that he was perfectly healthy and hadn't suffered any hidden injuries from the explosion.
After calming Hermione's worries, Ivan inquired about her experience that night, wanting to know when Dumbledore had started following him.
As they walked and talked, by the time they reached the Gryffindor Common Room, Hermione had recounted how she and Dumbledore followed Ivan into the chamber...
