Chapter 68: The True War - Conclusion
Chapter 68: The True War - Conclusion
Liam found that the elite zombies he was commanding were about the same size as regular zombies, sitting in seats on the backs of colossal zombies, which were even larger than the normal ones. They were frantically directing the zombies to reinforce as the humans charged towards them.
Unfortunately, the plants capable of ranged attacks were putting up a strong barrier, preventing the surrounding zombies from providing immediate support.
Dave's giant robots quickly engaged the zombies, pinning down the colossal zombies while the plants on their backs unleashed a barrage of attacks.
Liam wasn't idle either. He began using magic to target the elite zombies. However, he discovered that these elite zombies had magic resistance, and even the Purge of the Unclean, which was specifically designed to counter ancient Life Magic, only managed to slightly slow them down.
Deciding to focus on supporting his teammates, Liam saw a colossal zombie being pinned by a giant robot, with an elite zombie trying to escape. He aimed a Purge of the Unclean at the zombie, causing it to hesitate for a moment. Seizing the opportunity, Liam's teammate maneuvered the robot forward and used the Fire Dragon Grass to incinerate the elite zombie.
Without a word, Liam used his Grapple Hook to swing to another direction, quickly attaching an Iron Armor to a warrior who had fallen off a robot during the battle, helping him fend off a zombie's attack. On the battlefield, everyone was doing their best to support their comrades and eliminate the enemy.
In less than ten minutes of intense fighting, the humans had completely eradicated the elite zombies that were commanding the zombie army. When the last elite zombie was crushed by a giant robot, Liam knew the war was won.
Sure enough, without the elite zombies to direct them, the other zombies reverted to their aimless wandering. Although the humans' Life Force still attracted them, the zombies no longer posed the same overwhelming threat.
Without a leader, the zombies were nothing but a disorganized mob, and they were quickly wiped out. As the sun began to set, the war was over.
In the post-battle tally, over 700 humans and 5,000 robots, equipped with a large number of mystic plants, had completely annihilated more than 100,000 zombies in the Greenleaf Plains around Greenville.
The cost, however, was significant. Although no one died, at least ten people would be permanently disabled. Half of the robots were destroyed, and only one in ten of the giant robots survived.
Most importantly, half of the plants were lost, and the melee plants were almost entirely wiped out. Additionally, the stockpiled resources were almost entirely depleted, leaving the humans unable to launch another offensive for at least six months.
However, the gains were substantial. With the capture of Greenville by the coast, the humans finally regained basic industrial capabilities. (To assemble the 5,000 robots, the town had already used up almost all the steel they could find, including from several pre-disaster steel warehouses and an abandoned railway station with multiple trains. Thankfully, the plants used in the steel-making process did not require fuel, or it might have been impossible to produce so many robots.)
Now, with enough territory to develop industry and cultivate plants, if they could focus on development for a while, the humans would inevitably regain their dominance in the world.
Since it was already completely dark, they decided not to enter the city for safety reasons. Liam, following the ancient practices of Viking Wizards, directed the robots to build an Altar on the battlefield. Through an ancient ritual, he aimed to resolve the Resentment of the Zombies lying there, liberating and purifying the souls of the unfortunate souls trapped in their decaying bodies.
As Liam stood on the Altar, continuously waving his wand and chanting in Ancient Viking, faint silver lights began to emerge from the fallen Zombies, forming vague, translucent spirits in the air. As the chanting continued, the ghosts' expressions gradually grew calm, and they finally bowed to Liam on the Altar before dissipating into smoke.
The purification ritual lasted the entire night before it was finally complete. Fortunately, these were just Zombies, whose strength was primarily in their physical bodies. After destroying their bodies, their souls were even weaker than those of ordinary people. If they had been Wraiths or similar spirits, the ritual would have been both troublesome and dangerous.
The others also witnessed the countless ghosts, and some even saw their relatives and friends, weeping uncontrollably. The next morning, Liam noticed that everyone in the camp looked at him with a mix of reverence and gratitude. After tidying up, everyone set off for Greenville, with the fully recovered people heading there by midday.
After clearing out the few remaining Zombies in Greenville, Liam and Dave saw Kenvi off at the dock. Kenvi was about to set sail on a Steam-Powered Sailing Ship as part of the reconstruction plan, searching for survivors on nearby islands.
As the sail faded into the distance, Dave turned to Liam and said, "Dave feels his friend is about to come home."
"Indeed", Liam replied. "The tasks we set out to do are complete, and it's time for me to return home. Next time I come, I'll look for Elixirs. Perhaps they can help the disabled warriors regain their strength."
"Thank you for your help this time. You used your magic to eliminate many difficult foes and saved many lives. In this era, every person who survives is a ray of hope." Dave patted Liam on the shoulder and gestured for him to follow.
As they walked by the river, Liam noticed a steamboat carrying a large number of parts approaching from upstream.
"I'll build the second Power Tower in this city. The original town is good for refuge, but if we want to develop, the space is severely limited", Dave said, pointing to the steamboat.
Then he pointed to a high ground by the river where numerous robots were busily working, seemingly constructing something.
"Because our numbers are still small, to prevent a Zombie resurgence, Dave decided to build a Giant Fortress here that can house everyone, ensuring safety. This will be our base, and the materials will be sourced from the city."
At the construction site, Liam carefully examined the building materials and noticed that many were indeed taken from the city's structures. It seemed that for safety, the city would have to make a temporary sacrifice.
Dave entered a newly built small room and emerged with a notebook computer, an external hard drive, and a bag of seeds.
"This is my gift to you. It includes my lifetime of insights and notes, as well as some seeds. You deserve this. Besides this, I'm also giving you a large farm to thank you for your contributions to our world", Dave said, holding Liam's hand with an unusually serious expression.
"Thank you. I've learned a lot from you as well. I hope the next time I come, I'll see a beautiful world", Liam replied, gripping Dave's hand firmly. He then stepped back, opened a Portal, and waved goodbye to Dave before leaving this world.
