Chapter 68: His Gentleness
Chapter 68: His Gentleness
Jiang Xia tilted her head back, eyes closed, and clutched his shirt, pressing her lips to his.
Both were novices, awkward and nervous, their hearts pounding like drums.
He was gentle, carefully and cautiously exploring her.
As time passed, Zhou Chenglei's hands, which were gripping her waist and the back of her neck, tightened and grew firmer.
The veins in his arms stood out, the fine muscle fibers highlighting his strength.
Their height difference was significant, and Jiang Xia was bent backward by his weight.
Just as she felt her waist might snap, he lifted her with one arm, cradling her.
Her feet left the ground, and Jiang Xia instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck, her long legs curling around him like a sloth hanging from a tree.
Zhou Chenglei turned and pressed her against the wall, his arm muscles rippling and defined.
Without the height difference, their hearts were pressed together, beating close and strong.
Jiang Xia felt his powerful heartbeat, "thud thud thud," resonating with her own, as if both hearts were trying to leap out of their chests.
They were in sync, like two hands clapping, hearts colliding and greeting each other with the same rhythm.
After what seemed like an eternity, Zhou Chenglei gently laid her on the bed, his head buried in the crook of her neck, his voice low and hoarse, "I'll go take a shower. Will you wait for me?"
Jiang Xia kept her eyes closed, her lips burning, too embarrassed to respond.
How could she answer?
To say yes would be too forward, but to say no would be too cold!
She just wanted to ask why he didn't take a shower before coming back to the room!
Zhou Chenglei took a deep breath, then lifted his head to look at her. His usually pale cheeks were flushed with a rosy hue.
He was breathtakingly beautiful, a sight to behold!
His Adam's apple bobbed, and he couldn't resist leaning down to plant a firm kiss on her cheek, making a loud "pop" sound before quickly standing up, opening the wardrobe to find a change of clothes, and heading to the shower.
Jiang Xia's face burned, her heart still pounding. She pulled the thin blanket over her head, trying to calm herself.
Even after a while, her heartbeat didn't slow.
Thinking about what was to come, her face flushed even more, her heart racing!
No, she had to stay calm!
Deciding that lying in bed waiting for him wasn't the best idea, Jiang Xia got up and found something to do.
She walked to the vanity table, intending to put away the money box. She glanced at the time on her watch: 9:30 PM.
Had so much time really passed?
So he had been kissing her against the wall for an hour?
Jiang Xia's face turned red again. She opened the money box on the table, revealing stacks of large bills, filling more than half the box. There was also a savings book with four thousand yuan, and she remembered withdrawing three thousand for the dowry or something similar.
She added her own money, and the iron box was nearly full.
She placed the money box back in its original spot in the large cabinet, making it easy for him to access.
This was the money Zhou Chenglei had saved over fifteen years of military service and recent fishing trips, earned through his blood and sweat, and he had given it all to her.
Jiang Xia glanced at the red, white, and blue bag in the corner, intending to put the sanitary pads in the cabinet drawer.
Since neither of them had much stuff, a couple of drawers in the cabinet were still empty.
She opened the bag and took out her parents' clothes, only to find a few extra outfits at the bottom, clearly meant for a young woman.
One was a blue and white dress, perfect for the current weather.
Another was a light blue blazer, paired with a blue floral dress and a white belt, likely a new fall collection.
Blue was a tricky color, but Jiang Xia's fair skin and slender, curvy figure made her look stunning, with a unique and graceful aura, like a mermaid from the deep sea. She could wear many colors, especially the deep blue of the ocean.
When she went out to sea, she often wore a sailor's T-shirt, which was also breathtakingly beautiful.
There were also a blue long-sleeved sailor shirt and green military pants, and a white long-sleeved shirt and black pants, both practical for everyday wear.
Even though it wasn't fall yet, Zhou Chenglei had already prepared three outfits for her.
Jiang Xia smiled, setting the clothes aside to wash them before putting them in the wardrobe.
Jiang Xia slowly placed each package of sanitary pads into the drawer, arranging them neatly. Time seemed to crawl by as she did so.
She was a meticulous person, always keeping her wardrobe tidy and her cosmetics arranged in order of height.
Zhou Chenglei carried three buckets of water into the bathroom. He took at least two showers a day—once in the morning after his run and once in the evening. Sometimes, if he didn’t go out to sea, he would take another quick shower at noon. Normally, he used two buckets of water, but tonight, he wanted to make sure he was extra clean, so he brought an extra bucket.
After his shower, Zhou Chenglei sniffed his arm to ensure he was clean before stepping out and quickly washing the clothes he and Jiang Xia had changed out of.
Once the clothes were hung to dry, he walked back into the house. As he entered the living room, his mother came out of Zhou Zhou’s room, looking worried. She always checked to make sure Zhou Zhou was properly covered before going to bed.
Seeing Zhou Chenglei, his mother said, "A-Lei, Zhou Zhou seems to have a fever. Her body is burning hot. Do you still have any headache powder? Did Xiao Xia leave any last time?"
Zhou Chenglei walked into Zhou Zhou’s room and touched her forehead.
It was scorching!
In the middle of summer, a child’s fever is harder to detect than in winter, but Zhou Zhou’s forehead was burning hot.
"We’re out. We need to go to the health center. I’ll carry her there." Zhou Chenglei, wearing only a tank top, intended to go back to his room to grab a shirt.
It was late, and no one would be at the production team office. Running to find someone to open the door and borrow a tractor would take too much time.
It would be faster to carry Zhou Zhou to town, which wasn’t too far away.
Jiang Xia, who had overheard her mother-in-law’s words, quickly changed into her clothes, grabbed a hundred yuan, and opened her door. Just as Zhou Chenglei was about to push it open, he saw her and paused. "Zhou Zhou has a fever. I’m taking her to the health center."
Jiang Xia replied, "I heard. I’ll go with you. We can ride the bicycle. I’ll support her on the back, and I’ve already brought the money."
"Alright! I’ll get a shirt." Zhou Chenglei agreed and walked into his room to grab a shirt.
Jiang Xia went to get the bicycle.
Zhou’s father, who had been sleeping, was woken by the commotion. Zhou’s mother called him to wake Zhou Zhou.
After putting on his shirt, Zhou Chenglei put on a headlamp for illumination and took the bicycle from Jiang Xia.
Zhou’s father placed Zhou Zhou on the back of the bicycle.
Zhou Zhou was half-awake, and he instructed her, "Zhou Zhou, be careful and spread your legs. Don’t let your feet get caught in the wheels, or they could break, understand?"
Zhou Zhou, half-asleep on Zhou Chenglei’s back, nodded.
Jiang Xia also climbed onto the bicycle, one arm around Zhou Zhou and the other gripping Zhou Chenglei’s shirt. She said to Zhou’s father, "Dad, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of Zhou Zhou."
Zhou Chenglei asked, "Are you ready?"
"Ready."
"Hold on tight, we’re off!"
"I’m holding on."
Zhou Chenglei pedaled hard, and the bicycle started moving.
The road was rough, and it was dark, making it hard to see. Jiang Xia had to hold Zhou Zhou tightly to prevent her from falling off and keep her feet away from the wheels to avoid getting them caught.
Fortunately, the town wasn’t far. They arrived in less than ten minutes, but Jiang Xia was exhausted.
Zhou Chenglei stopped the bicycle in front of the health center, and Jiang Xia quickly got off. Zhou Chenglei turned to help her, saying, "Be careful, don’t rush."
Jiang Xia hugged Zhou Zhou. "You carry Zhou Zhou inside, and I’ll lock the bike."
"Okay." Zhou Chenglei shifted to support Zhou Zhou, and Jiang Xia instinctively reached for the bicycle handle to steady it.
Zhou Chenglei got off the bicycle, picked up Zhou Zhou, and rushed into the emergency room.
"Doctor, the child has a high fever!"
The same elderly doctor and young nurse from last time were on duty.
Jiang Xia quickly locked the bicycle and ran inside.
The elderly doctor stood up quickly, pushing a bed over, and recognized Zhou Chenglei and Jiang Xia. He couldn’t help but say, "Your child? I hope it’s not another 37.1-degree fever this time."
Zhou Chenglei: "..."
Jiang Xia: "..."
