Chapter 671: Mebis, It's Time to Rest
Chapter 671: Mebis, It's Time to Rest
Within the grand palace of the Phoenix Heart Mage Guild, Acalia led Mebis inside. Upon entering, Mebis immediately spotted a familiar figure standing at the front of the palace, his back turned to her as he gazed out at the sky.
"You're here, Mebis," said Feng Ye as he turned around with a gentle smile. "After four years, you've grown a lot since you left."
Though her physical appearance remained unchanged, a thirteen-year-old girl, Mebis's magical prowess had blossomed. Her intellect and knowledge of magic far surpassed what they had been four years ago; she now possessed the power of a Grand Mage.
"Teacher!" Mebis beamed at Feng Ye and rushed towards him with open arms.
However, just as she reached out to embrace him, she froze, her body stiffening as if she had suddenly remembered something.
Feng Ye gently smiled and reached out to ruffle her hair affectionately. "Don't worry, the Contradiction Curse has no effect on me."
"Mhm!" Mebis nodded, reassured by his words, and then threw her arms around him in a tight hug.
Feng Ye stood there quietly, allowing Mebis to embrace him. He offered a slight nod towards Acalia, acknowledging her role in bringing Mebis here. While he could have easily transported Mebis himself using a spatial door, he wanted to maintain the demeanor of a mentor—after all, he was a legendary mage from centuries ago.
After a few seconds of this peaceful moment…
Mebis slowly loosened her grip and tilted her head back to look up at Feng Ye's familiar, handsome face. A mischievous smile played on her lips as she asked, "Teacher, it seems like you know everything about me. Have you been watching over me during my adventures?"
"Yes," Feng Ye nodded gently, indicating the nearby empty space where an image of the Fairy Tail Mage Guild was projected, a combination of space and projection magic.
Mebis's eyes widened as she recognized the technique. "This is… a combination of space and projection magic?"
"Indeed," Feng Ye smiled softly. "You identified it immediately."
Though Mebis had no prior exposure to space magic, her experiences over the last four years—from founding the Fairy Tail Mage Guild to the ongoing war—had exposed her to a vast array of magical arts.
Despite her youthful appearance, Mebis was now seventeen, soon to be an adult, and her knowledge far exceeded that of her peers.
Mebis curiously studied the projection, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, before a thought occurred to her. She turned towards Feng Ye, her expression adorably blank as she asked, "With this magic, can you even see me when I'm bathing?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, Mebis burst into giggles, her cheeks reddening as she added, "But of course, Teacher wouldn't do something like that!"
Bang! Feng Ye tapped her forehead with his finger, causing Mebis to let out a startled sound and stumble back a couple of steps, rubbing her forehead.
Having chastised Mebis for her unexpected question, Feng Ye's expression softened once more. "Now, let's remove the Contradiction Curse from you."
"Okay," Mebis nodded obediently and moved closer to him again.
Just then, her eyes widened slightly as she sensed an uncontrollable power surging within her, a force that seemed to want to burst forth in all directions.
This power was shrouded in darkness, carrying a silent, deadly aura. To call it darkness, however, was not entirely accurate, for it seemed to be the opposite of life, a force of death!
"Teacher!" Mebis exclaimed in surprise.
But before she could say more, she witnessed the power of death that had erupted from her body wash over Feng Ye without causing him any harm.
Feng Ye stood firm, unmoved by the dark tide crashing against him. With a calm gesture, he raised his hand and reached forward, causing the spreading darkness to hesitate and then rapidly retract towards its source.
It was as if an invisible spider web of darkness had been pulled by Feng Ye, unraveling strand by strand until it coalesced in his palm.
This wellspring of deathly stillness originated from Mebis's body. The tendrils of darkness that Feng Ye had captured now condensed into a black, rope-like entity, one end still connected to Mebis.
Crackle!
With a casual flick of his wrist, Feng Ye pulled the rest of the rope from Mebis's body. In contrast to the blackness of the first half, the second half glowed with a pure white radiance, resembling the essence of life itself.
Mebis staggered forward, her body unable to resist even with her Holy Ten Great Wizard-level magic. She fell to the ground, breathless.
The Contradiction Curse, extracted from her body by Feng Ye, left her drenched in sweat. For a moment, she couldn't even stand, simply sitting there and looking up at him with difficulty.
Then she saw it.
A strand of light and a strand of darkness intertwined at Feng Ye's fingertips, eventually transforming into a drop of white liquid and a drop of black liquid, swirling together.
"This is... the root of the Contradiction Curse..."
Mebis' eyes sparkled as she inhaled sharply.
Even at this distance, she couldn't discern the true nature of the Contradiction Curse's power; all she could see was pure life force and pure death force.
With her current realm, there were very few magics that Mebis couldn't decipher, and the Contradiction Curse was one of them—a power far beyond the reach of normal magic.
"Alright."
Feng Ye transformed the Contradiction Curse into two entwined strands of hair, one white and one black, and made them disappear into the air before giving Mebis a slight nod.
Mebis panted for a few more seconds before struggling to her feet. She looked at Feng Ye, her eyes reflecting a hint of awe. "Teacher, your power... Have you reached a level comparable to the gods, able to dispel even their curses so effortlessly?"
She knew Feng Ye was powerful.
During the seven years she had followed him as his student, she had felt his strength countless times, like an unfathomable abyss of magic that seemed forever out of reach.
And now, as she had grown and matured, the power she sensed from him remained unchanged—an overwhelming might with boundaries beyond her perception.
Just how strong was Feng Ye? Had he reached the pinnacle of magic, able to wield the power of the gods?
"No," Feng Ye shook his head with a smile. "I still have a long way to go before I can match the power of the gods."
Mebis' awe-filled gaze softened slightly as she exhaled. "But to be able to dispel the Contradiction Curse so easily, your understanding of magic must be unparalleled."
"Not quite," Feng Ye said, looking at Mebis. "While I have unified and mastered all the magic of this world, there is one magic that eludes me."
Mebis paused, then asked, "You mean..."
"The One Magic."
Feng Ye spoke with a gentle expression.
Mebis was somewhat familiar with this concept and blinked before responding, "The One Magic... That's only mentioned in legends, isn't it?"
"But it may appear within you," Feng Ye said with a casual smile. "In terms of magical prowess, you have the potential to surpass me, Mebis. Your talent surpasses mine."
Mebis was slightly taken aback, then whispered, "I... I don't think I can do that..."
Feng Ye smiled at her and said, "I've been seeking the pinnacle of magic, but I've struggled to comprehend the One Magic. In you, I saw hope. If it manifests within you, then I will also have a chance to grasp it. That's why I took you as my student."
"I possess the magic of foresight and the ability to retrace the past, so it wasn't a coincidence that we met. I actively sought you out because I wanted to find the One Magic through you."
At this point, Feng Ye's expression became more serene as he smiled at Mebis. "Do you feel that your teacher isn't as perfect as you imagined?"
Mebis blinked, her eyes—pure and innocent like gems—fixed on Feng Ye as she said,
"No..."
"I know," she said with an adorable, innocent smile. "For a wizard like you, it couldn't have been a coincidence that we met, and you took pity on my situation and took me in."
She looked up at him, her eyes sparkling. "You have always been my most revered teacher."
Feng Ye returned her smile.
He reached out and ruffled Mebis' hair affectionately. How could anyone resist such a pure-hearted, clever, and adorable girl? Even if she weren't the key to the One Magic, Feng Ye might have still taken her as his student.
"Well, Mebis, it's time for us to get some rest."
"Eh?" Mebis was taken aback.
Feng Ye's gaze shifted to the projection of the Fairy Tail Guild in the distance. "During this time, I've foreseen many futures, and in the coming years, the probability of the One Magic emerging is very, very low."
"So, let's use Phoenix Magic to enter a state of hibernation... We'll sleep for a hundred years."
