Chapter 671: A Legacy Across Generations
Chapter 671: A Legacy Across Generations
The burly man, naturally, stood no chance against Moer.
Within moments, he was black-and-blue and unconscious on the ground.
Moer whistled at the fallen man before turning back.
"So, what now? Are you coming with me?"
David glanced at Walis, who had fainted in his arms, and shook his head. "Walis is out cold. I need to take him for treatment first."
He paused, glancing outside. "You'd better leave. It wouldn’t look good if people saw the Navy killing someone who isn’t a pirate."
Moer followed his gaze, scratched his head, then hoisted the burly man over his shoulder.
"Yeah, guess I’ll head off. I’ll find you again later—don’t go dying on me. If you die, I’ll have hell to pay when Kurovice Admiral remembers you."
With a flash, he vanished in a burst of white light.
David stared at the empty space where Moer had stood, then shook his head with a bitter smile. "Devil Fruit user. So convenient."
Hardly had Moer disappeared when heavy footsteps echoed from the direction they’d both been watching.
"Quick! This way!"
Voices rang out as a crowd surged toward them. Leading the charge was an elderly grandma, sprinting faster than anyone.
"Grandma?"
David blinked in surprise. This grandma was familiar—the one who’d thrown garbage at him earlier and told him to clean it up.
Among the crowd, a young boy pointed excitedly at the nearby ruins.
"It’s here! I saw it—Walis and David were surrounded!"
"Who dares bully David?! No one can bully David!"
The crowd's leader shouted with a fierce glare, her voice cracking like thunder as she brandished her flintlock pistol toward the ruins. The elderly woman's wrinkled face contorted into a terrifying scowl, her words carrying the weight of generations as the armed civilians surged forward behind her.
Grandma’s face twisted into a terrifying expression, but her expression softened when she spotted the corpses scattered around David.
There he stood, Walis cradled in his arms, his free hand dangling limply. The Wolf Head Aura surrounding him had just faded.
The sight made several Deng Shi in the crowd tense.
"Grandma? How did you all get here?" David stammered.
"I saw it!" the young boy exclaimed. "When I saw a bunch of people with weapons coming after you, I ran home to get everyone!"
David looked at the crowd. These were all his neighbors, faces etched with grave concern, as if witnessing something monumental.
Most striking of all—each of them carried weapons.
Flintlock pistols, long spears, blades. Not a single wooden club or pitchfork among them. All were finely crafted, clearly meant for combat.
Yet these were civilians. Where had they gotten such weapons?
"You—"
Before David could ask, Grandma trembled, pointing at the corpses beside him. Her voice carried a strange hope.
"Did you do this?"
David hesitated. He couldn’t say it was the Navy—Moer had saved him once and seemed decent. This was Dressrosa Kingdom territory. Killing non-pirates might cause complications. He couldn’t drag Vice Admiral Kuro, who had protected them, into trouble.
So he nodded. "Yes. I did."
The words had barely left his lips when a few people dropped to their knees. Among them were Grandma, Walis’s father, and that shifty guy.
"Grandma, what are you doing?!" David cried.
"Finally… finally…"
Grandma wept openly. "Pansha, you’ve finally Awakened!"
At her words, the officers still standing dropped to their knees as well.
"Awakened…" The shifty man sobbed, gripping his long blade and pressing it to his abdomen. "Forgive me for my past transgressions!"
With that, he drove the blade into his gut.
David lunged, kicking the weapon away with a shout. "What do you think you’re doing?!"
But the blade had already pierced deep. When it flew from his hands, blood poured from his wound.
"All for the sake of Awakening Pansha", Grandma said softly. She raised her pistol to her temple. "Now that our purpose is fulfilled, we who have insulted Pansha have no right to live."
Bang!
David kicked the gun from her hand.
The others raised their weapons too, turning them on themselves.
All officers. Even the boy who’d led the group looked dazed.
"All for atonement", Walis’s father said with a smile. "Forgive us, sir. We’ve wronged you and your ancestors these many years. Please, carry forward Pansha’s Glory."
"Father… Dad?"
A voice rang out.
David’s arms stirred as Walis regained consciousness. The sight of his father holding a weapon to himself shocked him.
The man paused, softening as he looked at his son. Then he slammed his head to the ground.
"One last request, sir. Please don’t blame the children. They’re too young to understand the truth. Their actions were only ever shaped by our influence. This has been our way for generations."
"But now, it’s no longer needed. Officer, you’ve Awakened. These children will serve as your attendants from now on."
"Father, what are you talking about?"
Walis stared at his usually fierce father kneeling like a man saying his final words. He seemed dazed, yet he already gripped his weapon, ready to strike himself.
The others moved in unison.
"Stop!!!"
David’s voice boomed. His pupils constricted as the Wolf Head Aura surged around him. His eyes blazed at the kneeling crowd.
Under that aura, they froze, hands halted mid-motion.
"What are you doing?!" David demanded. "What do you even know?!"
"The aura… Officer has finally stopped hiding. He’s truly Awakened! Truly Awakened!"
Grandma murmured, wiping tears before speaking again. "We are your followers, the followers of Pansha. Since eight centuries ago, we’ve been by Pansha’s side, generation after generation."
"Followers?"
David frowned. "That’s impossible! Pansha was defeated eight hundred years ago!"
"Not defeated", Grandma corrected, shaking her head. "Eight hundred years of oral tradition haven’t revealed the full truth. My mother told me: ‘That was no defeat. Pansha lost the fighting spirit. Our mission is to rekindle it.’"
"So our sole purpose as followers has always been to provoke you through humiliation until Pansha regains that fighting spirit."
"It started with your father, your grandfather, your ancestors. Every generation."
"Generation after generation, we’ve learned the truth upon coming of age. We’ve protected you while seeking to Awaken Pansha."
"But until now, none succeeded. Only in your lifetime, sir, has the fighting spirit returned."
"Pansha… Officer…" Grandma looked at David. "You must know the true history better than any of us."
