Chapter 670: Tonks' Disguise Class
Chapter 670: Tonks' Disguise Class
As the team returned to the changing room, they were still immersed in the joyful atmosphere of their victory.
"I bet Davies was just faking it..." Mikel exclaimed excitedly, "He must have known that Ravenclaw had no chance of winning with Kyle having the Firebolt Arrow."
"Don't say that," Cedric, now in his robes, shook his head, "Gryffindor's Harry Potter also has the Firebolt Arrow, and he's a Seeker. If Roger Davies was truly afraid of losing, the best choice would be to withdraw from the team."
"And Autumn mentioned yesterday that Davies was hit by a Bludger and fell off his broom. Madam Pomfrey probably didn't allow him to leave the hospital wing so soon."
"Well..." Mikel hesitated, shivering slightly.
Back in his first year, Mikel had witnessed Madam Pomfrey's methods. Even if Professor Flitwick intervened, she wouldn't allow Davies to participate in the match.
"Alright, let's go." Cedric smiled, "How about a celebration in the Common Room tonight? After all, it's our first victory this year, and we should celebrate properly."
The other team members immediately agreed, leaving the changing room in high spirits.
The castle was also immersed in a sea of joy, as if the Quidditch match had broken through the gloom that had been hanging over Hogwarts. People gradually stopped worrying about the mysterious person and Death Eaters who had been out of contact, instead shifting their focus to the upcoming Dark Arts Defense class.
With the promotion of the sixth-year students, most people knew that a new teacher had arrived at Hogwarts.
"I really hope this new teacher will teach us something new." Hannah said in the Common Room, "I'm tired of copying and reciting. It's barely past Christmas, and I've already spent a Galleon more on parchment than last year. If this continues, I'll run out of pocket money."
"It shouldn't be the case." Cedric said, "In my impression, she and Umbridge have completely different personalities."
"Do you know that professor?" Hannah looked at him.
"Yeah." Cedric nodded, "When I first enrolled, she was in her seventh year. She had already been selected as an Auror trainee and was often absent from school."
"What kind of person is she?" Mikel asked curiously, "Like you? Being selected as an Auror trainee in the seventh year, she must be excellent. I think she has at least ten certificates."
"No, quite the opposite." Cedric hesitated and said, "Although I didn't interact much with her and we never spoke, many people at the time said that Tonks was sorted into Hufflepuff in Gryffindor."
"What does that mean?" Mikel blinked, "Isn't she from Hufflepuff? How did she become a Gryffindor?"
"It means she's like a Gryffindor... not so obedient." Cedric searched for words, finally settling on a somewhat acceptable description.
After all, the person in question was now a professor, and it wouldn't be appropriate to gossip behind her back.
"Oh, I remember." At this moment, a seventh-year student suddenly spoke up, "In the last Quidditch match, the person who fought with Hufflepuff and Slytherin was a red-haired girl."
Cedric turned his head away, not saying a word, implicitly acknowledging the statement.
The crowd immediately became interested.
"Tell us more..." People around took out candies, biscuits, and other small snacks from their pockets and gathered around the seventh-year student.
"It was like this... It was the last Quidditch match, between us and Slytherin. Whoever won would be the ultimate champion. But during the match, they played a dirty trick, knocking our key player, Harris, off his broom, causing us to lose by thirty points.
"Then, during Slytherin's celebration, someone suddenly rushed from their seats and started fighting with them. Since all the Hufflepuffs were already upset, seeing someone take the lead, they all followed without hesitation... It was an incredible sight, but the professors were not pleased. That was the first time I saw Professor McGonagall get angry."
"Oh, that's so cool!" Hannah's eyes sparkled with excitement, but then she asked worriedly, "But for starting the fight... Was she punished? Was she put in detention?"
"No!" The seventh-year student shook their head.
"Not detained?" Hannah was taken aback, "It can't be an expulsion, can it? I mean, someone who's expelled can't become an Auror trainee, right?"
"Of course, it's not an expulsion." Cedric continued, "In fact, the professors couldn't find out who started it. The Slytherins all said it was a red-haired girl, but the problem is, there wasn't any red-haired girl in Hufflepuff at the time."
A chorus of disbelief echoed through the Common Room.
"Could it be someone from another house?" Someone suggested, "The Weasleys have red hair, maybe they sat with Hufflepuff earlier."
"The only Weasley girl hadn't enrolled yet." Cedric said, "And they searched the entire school but couldn't find that person."
"Wait..." Mikel was puzzled, "If that's the case, why do you say it's related to Nifadora Tonks?"
"Because she has a special ability to change her hair color, making her the most suspicious."
Cedric vaguely said, "But she claimed that she was detained by Filch in his office for causing trouble in the corridor and didn't go to the Great Hall."
"This was later confirmed by Filch, though many people were convinced that she was the culprit at the time, but there was no evidence.
"And a week later, she graduated and became an Auror, and the matter was dropped."
"Oh..." Hannah's eyes sparkled with stars once more.
Leading the entire college in a fight and then getting away unscathed is a thrilling thought.
"I'm already looking forward to the Dark Arts Defense class," Mikel said excitedly. "When is our next class?"
"It's tomorrow, second period in the morning," Kyle replied.
"Why can't it be the first period?"
"Are you sure?" Ron smiled. "Don't forget that our professor is still Umbridge, and Nifadora Tonks is just here to assist her."
Mikel's face fell. "Please, can you not say these discouraging words when I'm feeling excited?"
A burst of laughter filled the room.
While Ron's statement was true, they hadn't changed the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, but at least there was some hope.
...
The next day, Kyle and the others first attended Charms Class.
Starting from the previous week, Professor Flitwick had prohibited everyone from casting spells, which led to chaos in the classroom.
Mikel's wand exploded, shooting out sparks that nearly set Professor Flitwick's hair on fire.
A Gryffindor girl waved her wand, and her hair stood up straight, resembling a uniquely shaped broom.
Someone's charm landed on the table, and then the table came to life, running around the classroom on its table legs. Professor Flitwick, who was trying to maintain order, was caught off guard and even knocked over by the table.
Kyle thought this must be a type of Transfiguration Spell, and the table seemed to perceive itself as a cow.
Fortunately, Professor Flitwick was used to such situations and, without anger, brushed himself off and quickly restored the classroom to its original state, while also punishing two students who had whispered spells.
After class, everyone hurriedly noted down their homework and then rushed out the door, eager to get to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom early.
Five minutes later, Umbridge entered the classroom, but that wasn't the highlight. To their delight, the students noticed that she was accompanied by another person—the very witch who had led the cheers for Hufflepuff during the Quidditch match.
Some students instinctively looked at her.
"Look, gray hair," Mikel whispered. "Her hair was yellow-black yesterday, like the Hufflepuff flag. I remember it clearly."
Aside from Mikel, the others also noticed the change in Tonks' hair color, and this discovery excited them.
"It seems Cedric and the others were telling the truth," Mikel said excitedly, looking ahead. "I wonder what she'll teach us... I hope it's the spell she used to punch the Slytherin and not get caught by the professor. I've always wanted to do that."
"Then you might be disappointed," Kyle glanced at him.
Disillusionment Charms are almost innate, and even if Tonks wanted to teach them, others wouldn't be able to learn.
By this time, Umbridge and Tonks had reached the podium.
As usual, Umbridge maintained her fake smile,
"So, open your Defense Against the Dark Arts Theory books. Where did we leave off last time?"
No one answered her, and only a few people attempted to open their books, but even they slowly stopped their actions in the eerie atmosphere.
A clear voice rang out from the classroom, "Professor, reading books shouldn't be our only defense against the Dark Arts."
"I've reminded you many times that you need to raise your hand to speak in my class!" Umbridge shouted. "Additionally, the Ministry of Magic will protect your safety. You just need to follow the Ministry's arrangements and stay put in school."
"But we can't stay in school forever."
"I said, raise your hand!" Umbridge raised her voice again. "I'll say it again, the Ministry of Magic will protect you. Now, turn to page one hundred and seventy-five in your books..."
"But, Professor Umbridge."
Someone interrupted her again.
Umbridge was about to get angry, but to her surprise, it was Tonks speaking this time.
She held a class schedule in her hand, examining it as if in deep thought, "According to the latest curriculum, it seems this class should be taught by me."
As she spoke, she unfolded the schedule and held it out to Umbridge, "Look, my name is even written here."
"You..." Umbridge's face darkened. "Don't forget, I'm the professor of this class, and you're just here to assist me."
This work is uploaded by 69 Book Bar.
"I've always kept that in mind and emphasized it many times," Tonks said.
"Then you should follow my arrangement and turn to..."
"But, Professor Umbridge." Tonks interrupted her again.
"However, this is a task assigned by the Minister, and I have to complete it. Otherwise, if someone reports to the Ministry that I'm just going through the motions and doing nothing, the Minister might get angry."
"If I insist on teaching."
"Of course, you're the professor, and you're in charge," Tonks replied nonchalantly. "But to keep my salary, I'll have to write to the Ministry to explain the situation.
"As you know, the Ministry is very concerned about Hogwarts now, and no one can slack off."
"Very well, very well.
Umbridge stared at Tonks, "Then this class is up to you, Professor Tonks."
She emphasized the last two words.
"I'm just an assistant, you're the professor." Tonks corrected.
But Umbridge didn't seem pleased, she didn't even look at Tonks again, but walked straight off the podium and out of the classroom.
The moment the door closed, a cheer erupted in the classroom.
"Alright, don't get too excited." Tonks waved her hand.
Once everyone quieted down, she continued, "What are you still staring at? Hurry up and put away that damn Defense Against the Dark Arts Theory book. I say it's all nonsense written on it, it's useless."
"Of course, I'm not saying it's bad, but the content is too rigid. In real situations, you'll hardly be able to use it."
Before she could finish her sentence, there wasn't a single book left on the desks, and some people had already taken out their wands.
"Put away your wands too." Tonks said, "Because before class... I have to check your Transfiguration skills first."
"Transfiguration?" Someone didn't understand, "But this is a Defense Against the Dark Arts class."
"I know, but what I'm teaching, Transfiguration... is like this."
Tonks tapped her wand on her face, and her cheeks immediately puffed up, and her chin became slightly flatter.
Although it was just a small change, it made her look like a different person. If the setting were different, even if she walked towards him, Kyle might not be able to recognize her as Tonks.
"Disguise class." Tonks said, "A way to temporarily change your appearance without potions."
"I know, some of you are disdainful of this. You think that as long as you learn Human Transfiguration, why bother with this extra step, right?"
Her gaze swept across the classroom, and some people immediately put away their expressions, but these people were basically Gryffindors. They wanted to learn more powerful magic, not this... something they had already learned in Transfiguration class, or could be achieved with a potion.
But they didn't notice that the Hufflepuffs who came to class together were excited after hearing Tonks' words, their eyes turning red.
"I knew it," Mikel couldn't help but laugh.
Kyle didn't speak. He didn't expect Tonks to use Human Transfiguration instead of Disillusionment Charm. She should be assisting Professor McGonagall.
"I need to warn you here..." Tonks continued on the podium, "If you use Human Transfiguration to change your appearance without practice, it will only make you stand out more in a crowd."
"Mr. Thomas." She pointed to a person, "I see you don't seem to agree with my words."
"No, I don't." A Gryffindor stood up and said.
"Just call me Assistant." Tonks said, "It's fine, you can try it like I just did. If you can make others not recognize you, then you're free to do whatever you want in this class."
"Really?"
"Of course." Tonks smiled.
"Great!" The person immediately took out his wand and tapped his face.
Then, a burst of laughter erupted around him, some people holding their stomachs, tears almost coming out from laughing.
"What's wrong?" He was a little bewildered.
Tonks didn't answer, but a mirror appeared in front of him.
The person only glanced at it and screamed.
It was clear that he wanted to learn from Tonks' method, but he didn't grasp the right degree, changing a bit too much. The Transfiguration spell even affected his nose, making him look like a House-Elf who had drunk a Swelling Potion... and it was an expired Swelling Potion.
However, in a sense, he did succeed. Now, no one could recognize who he was, including himself.
Tonks took out her wand, holding back her laughter, and waved it to help him remove the Transfiguration spell.
"This is what I meant. Untrained Human Transfiguration can't achieve the purpose of hiding yourself."
"Now, does anyone else want to try? The conditions remain the same. If you succeed, you're free to do whatever you want in this class."
Everyone avoided her gaze, especially the girls, who simply lowered their heads, pretending they hadn't heard anything.
"Very good." Tonks nodded in satisfaction, "Then let's start with the basics."
She waved her wand, and a rabbit appeared in front of each person.
"It's best to practice on them first before using it on yourself. This way, you can master the right amount of force."
A rabbit also appeared in front of Kyle, but he didn't immediately start like the others.
In fact, he wasn't that interested in what Tonks was teaching... Magic has its patterns, including Transfiguration. No matter how perfect it is, a powerful wizard will see through it.
For example, Dumbledore and Voldemort. To deceive them in appearance, there are only two ways... Polyjuice Potion and Disillusionment Charm.
Of course, for most Death Eaters, this method is still quite effective. Their perception of magic isn't as sharp, and they might not notice it if they're not careful.
However, if it were Death Eaters, Kyle wouldn't need to change his appearance to save his life. He had a simpler and more violent way, and it would be the Death Eaters who would want to run away.
In general, what Tonks taught was only useful for most students. For Kyle, it was a bit redundant.
