Chapter 670: The Death of the Ancient One (Part 1)
Chapter 670: The Death of the Ancient One (Part 1)
After the conversation with the Ancient One, Jerry temporarily stayed at Kamar-Taj, waiting for the situation to develop.
As the Ancient One had said, they should just let things take their natural course.
While Stephen is currently studying magic at Kamar-Taj, his heart is still set on returning to his role as a doctor once his hand is fully healed.
For him to willingly stay at Kamar-Taj and take on the responsibilities of the Supreme Sorcerer, he needs to go through many experiences. Both the Ancient One and Jerry should avoid interfering.
If they do, the outcome might not be what it should be.
A week later.
In the living room of Kamar-Taj, Jerry was discussing time magic with the Ancient One.
Thanks to absorbing and comprehending a large number of principles, and frequently discussing magic with Kurulido from the ring world, Jerry's understanding of the time principle had significantly improved.
Whereas in the past, their discussions mostly involved the Ancient One explaining magic principles to him, now they truly engaged in mutual discussion.
"Revered One, the London Sanctum has been attacked by Kaecilius. All the guardians have been killed, and the sanctum’s magic array has been destroyed. Stephen is missing."
Mordo and Wong, the two most senior wizards at Kamar-Taj after the Ancient One, burst into the living room, looking disheveled.
The Ancient One paused their discussion and slowly stood up, addressing Mordo and Wong:
"Wong, you take a team to defend the Hong Kong Sanctum. Mordo, you come with me to the London Sanctum to rescue Stephen!"
After speaking, she turned to Jerry:
"I'm sorry, Carmen. It seems our discussion must end here. I have to leave."
"Revered One, are you sure about this?"
Jerry's tone carried a hint of regret.
He knew that when the Ancient One said she had to leave, it wasn't just leaving Kamar-Taj, but leaving this world. Honestly, he was quite reluctant to see her go.
Over the years, he had learned a great deal of magic knowledge from the Ancient One, who could be considered his partial magic mentor.
Moreover, whether the Ancient One lived or died wouldn't affect his plan to attack Dormammu; it might even provide some benefits.
Unfortunately, the Ancient One was clearly determined to leave. She didn't want to be bound by the position of Supreme Sorcerer any longer. She simply nodded and smiled:
"Carmen, I might trouble you more in the future!"
"Alright, I understand."
Jerry paused, then smiled.
For true friends, he never liked to force anyone or impose his own ideas on others. If the Ancient One felt that death and her soul following Eternity was a form of liberation, why should he try to disrupt her liberation?
Even if he believed that such liberation wasn't genuine, he would never abandon his physical form to follow Eternity.
Eternity was indeed powerful, a top-tier being on the scale of the multiverse. Based on the Marvel universe, Eternity was likely more powerful than the creator gods of the Magic: The Gathering worlds.
But Jerry had no intention of being anyone's subordinate. He wanted freedom and uncontrolled power. In the future, he would continue to grow stronger, even surpassing Eternity.
Seeing the Ancient One and Mordo leave, Jerry didn't stay at Kamar-Taj. Instead, he used a Phantom Shift to appear in a hospital in New York, Manhattan.
This was the hospital where Stephen used to work before he was injured, and it would also be the place where the Ancient One would die.
However, at the moment, Stephen was still engaged in a battle of souls with Kaecilius' followers inside the hospital.
"Truly talented, as expected of the chosen one to be the next Sorcerer Supreme."
Jerry watched as Stephen had his ex-girlfriend, Christine, use a taser on his body to strengthen his soul, allowing him to easily defeat Kaecilius' followers. He couldn't help but think to himself.
Soul magic, like time magic, is extremely difficult to master. Many Kamar-Taj mages without talent might never grasp soul magic in their entire lives.
Yet, Stephen had become proficient in it in less than a year.
So, sometimes when Jerry thought about that oft-repeated truism, "Success = 99% effort + 1% talent", he found it rather laughable.
In reality, most naturally talented individuals can effortlessly outperform those who work hard.
Sometimes, no matter how hard the hardworking individuals strive, they might not match what the talented ones can achieve with a casual effort.
Most of the world's motivational quotes are just a way to comfort those without talent, for only then can society remain more stable.
Besides, working hard is indeed better than not working hard, but it's far from as inspiring as those motivational quotes make it out to be.
After defeating Kaecilius' followers, Stephen bid a simple farewell to the bewildered Christine and opened a portal to return to the London Sanctum.
About half an hour later, a mirror dimension magic emanated from the New York Sanctum.
"Open!"
Jerry, floating above the city, gently drew a line on the mirror dimension, skillfully creating a viewing gap without disrupting its function, allowing it to continue operating normally.
Inside the mirror dimension, Stephen and Mordo were frantically fleeing, with Kaecilius and his followers, who had absorbed a great deal of dark force and greatly increased their power, hot on their heels.
Jerry did not intervene, as the Ancient One had already appeared in the mirror dimension.
She seemed to sense Jerry's presence and smiled in his direction before engaging Kaecilius and his followers in battle.
Moments later, the Ancient One was impaled through the abdomen by Kaecilius' sword and kicked out of the mirror dimension, crashing harshly onto the street, on the brink of death.
Jerry, who had been watching the entire time, couldn't help but cover his eyes.
It wasn't that he was too saddened by the Ancient One's impending death, but rather that he found the way she had designed her own death to be rather unseemly.
The Ancient One was a being of the Celestial Peak, on the same level as him, who had forcefully borrowed a vast amount of dimensional deities' magic power, strong enough to traverse the multiverse alone.
To die like this, just from being thrown, seemed too hasty.
Let alone being impaled through the abdomen or falling from a high building, even if her body was dismembered and turned to pulp, he felt the Ancient One wouldn't die unless she wanted to.
With Jerry's current abilities, as long as the soul remained intact, he could easily use any of a dozen methods to reconstruct the body and restore it to its peak condition.
Moreover, in the Marvel Main World, there was no rule that the dead could not be brought back to life.
"Stephen, it seems the Ancient One went to great lengths to ensure you would willingly become the Sorcerer Supreme!"
Seeing Stephen bring the dying Ancient One to the hospital where he used to work to perform surgery and save her, Jerry slowly landed on the hospital's rooftop.
