Chapter 670: Jellal
Chapter 670: Jellal
Inside the Fairy Tail guild hall, the first guild master, Mebis, sat atop the counter, her small tuft of pale golden hair drooping powerlessly as she cupped her face with her hands in a listless manner.
"Ah... I really want to go on an adventure..."
Mebis had thought that she could finally relax after the war, but from the war's end until now, she had been busy with guild matters for nearly three months, leaving her utterly exhausted. She looked like a frost-bitten eggplant, devoid of her usual lively spirit.
She sat there listlessly, her bare little feet dangling in the air. Her feet were like translucent jade, delicate and petite, resembling five milk-white grapes. But at this moment, she didn't even have the energy to wiggle her toes.
"The guild can't function without you."
Yuri, who was nearby organizing the guild's request board, heard Mebis' voice and turned to look at her, offering a smile.
Mebis returned a dazed look, staring straight at Yuri.
Just then, a young and elegant woman walked over, gently wiped the sweat from Yuri's forehead with a towel, and handed him a cup of tea. She was Yuri's wife, Rita, whose pregnant belly was now quite prominent, indicating that she would be giving birth soon.
Mebis: "..."
No!
She decided that she must find Feng Ye as soon as possible! Although she looked adorable without aging, and everyone still loved her, she was already seventeen years old. It would be strange for a seventeen-year-old to still look thirteen, and she probably wouldn't be able to find a lover or anyone who truly liked her!
"!"
Just as Mebis was pondering how to free herself from this situation, she suddenly sensed something, and the tuft of hair on her head stood up straight, forming a '!' shape.
She looked toward the entrance and saw a girl of about seventeen or eighteen years slowly walking into the guild.
The girl approaching them wore a shaman's outfit and was also barefoot. Mebis felt a strange sense of familiarity with her, as if her power was linked to this girl.
"Phoenix magic..."
Mebis stared at the girl in surprise, her thoughts racing as she instantly deduced the identity of the newcomer. "You are... the Phoenix Shaman."
The atmosphere in the guild hall froze at that moment, as Yuri and Preeshito, among others, halted their activities and turned their gazes toward the approaching Acrasia.
Upon hearing Mebis' words, they all wore looks of shock.
The Phoenix Shaman!
This was a name that resounded throughout Ishgar, the first of the Ten Wizard Saints of Ishgar, existing since 300 years ago and possessing an immortal body.
"The... Phoenix Shaman..."
"She... she's the legendary strongest wizard in Ishgar..."
"How can she be so young..."
Yuri and the numerous wizards of the Fairy Tail guild stared at Acrasia in utter astonishment.
Acrasia's name was legendary throughout Ishgar, but very few had actually seen her appearance. In the public imagination, Acrasia, who had lived for over 300 years, should be an old woman. But contrary to expectations, she appeared to be not much older than Mebis!
The entire Fairy Tail guild hall fell into a solemn silence.
The atmosphere seemed frozen.
Amidst this stillness, Acrasia walked up to Mebis, smiled gently, and said, "I am Acrasia."
Mebis jumped down from the counter and stared at Acrasia for two seconds before flashing a cute and innocent smile. "My name is Mebis. You're so pretty, sister."
"You're adorable, too."
Acrasia responded with a gentle smile.
Sister?
Yuri and the others stiffened at this address. This was the legendary shaman who had lived for 300 years! However, Mebis was the student of the legendary wizard from 300 years ago, and Acrasia was said to be a follower of that figure, so it didn't seem inappropriate.
Mebis looked at Acrasia with a joyful expression and asked, "Sister, is there something you need from me?"
"Yes."
Acrasia nodded gently. "I came to tell you about something. The 'Contradictory Curse' on your body is about to activate soon."
Mebis paused, her pupils narrowing slightly as a bead of sweat formed on her brow. "The... Contradictory Curse?!"
"Yes."
Acrasia nodded. "You should be aware that Phoenix magic cannot dispel the physical side effects, preventing you from growing older."
"So, the side effect of using the incomplete super magic wasn't to stop aging but to incur the curse of the God of Life and Death, Ancusaram."
Mebis staggered back a couple of steps, her back hitting the counter. There was still a trace of bewilderment in her eyes as she said, "I... I know about that curse..."
The Contradictory Curse! The more you cherish life and the more you love life, the more you will take away the lives of others, and you will be immortal until you are tortured to collapse!
And this was a curse from a deity; there didn't seem to be any way to break it!
"So, you should leave."
Acrasia continued, "If you stay here, the curse will kill the people in this guild."
Mebis' breath hitched as she looked at Acrasia and asked in a trembling voice, "Then... can you lift this curse, sister?"
"I can't."
Acrasia shook her head. "Even the pinnacle of Phoenix magic, the ability to be reborn from ashes, cannot wash away this curse. But it's not an unsolvable problem."
The first half of Acrasia's statement made Mebis' face go pale, but the latter half caused her to pause before her eyes lit up with hope. "So, you mean..."
"Yes."
Acrasia nodded gently, not waiting for Mebis to finish her question.
If even Acrasia couldn't lift the curse, then the only person in the world who could break the Contradictory Curse was probably Feng Ye. Mebis was naturally asking about her teacher, and Acrasia understood her unspoken question.
Mebis' heart relaxed a little.
Her panic dissipated, and her mind calmed as she realized that if Acrasia said so, then Feng Ye should indeed be capable of doing it.
A faint smile appeared on her face, and after taking a deep breath, her gaze became firm once more. She turned her head to look behind her, her eyes moving between Yuri and Preeshito.
Yuri noticed Mebis's gaze and quickly guessed what she was thinking. He shook his head slightly, indicating that now was not the time, and gestured towards Rita's pregnant belly.
His wife was about to give birth, and he obviously wouldn't have the energy to run the guild at such a time.
Mebis acknowledged Yuri's signal and glanced at Rita's belly before nodding gently. She turned to Preeshito, a smile on her face, and said, "Preshito, I need to go and deal with my issue. You'll be in charge of the guild while I'm gone."
Preshito was taken aback, "You mean...?"
Mebis nodded, smiling as she said seriously, "From now on, you are the second-generation master of Fairy Tail!"
"But..."
Preshito opened his mouth, looking in Yuri's direction. His instinct was to suggest that Yuri should be the one to succeed, but his eyes fell on Rita's pregnant belly, and the words died in his throat.
He scratched the back of his head, hesitating as he looked at Mebis, "But am I capable?"
"You'll be fine. You're the one with the most magical talent!"
Mebis smiled at Preeshito.
And so, witnessed by many members of Fairy Tail, the four-year-old mage guild, Fairy Tail, ushered in its second guild master - Preeshito Gailberg! The first guild master, Mebis, left the Fairy Tail guild that day with the Phoenix Shaman, Acrasia, and disappeared from everyone's sight.
...
In the sky, Mebis lay on Acrasia's back, her small arms wrapped around Acrasia's neck, while Acrasia spread her arms, her arms transforming into phoenix wings entwined with golden flames, carrying Mebis as they soared through the clouds.
She carried Mebis over wide rivers and towering mountains until they finally approached a palace located on the eastern side of the city, standing alone and looking solemn and majestic.
This was the location of the Phoenix Heart Guild.
"This is your guild, sister..."
Mebis could already see the distant palace, her eyes filled with wonder as she spoke. Due to geographical reasons during the war, she had never been able to visit this place.
Acrasia retracted her wings and descended towards the ground, carrying Mebis as they landed in front of the palace. The golden flames surrounding them disappeared.
As they landed, Mebis let go and jumped down from Acrasia's back.
Just as the two of them turned to walk towards the palace, they both suddenly sensed something and turned their heads.
In the woods to the right of the palace, a young man in a wizard's robe was walking out, seemingly passing by.
"Acrasia..."
The young man noticed Acrasia and Mebis in front of the palace and paused.
Acrasia looked at the young man, her gaze lingering for a moment as she spoke his name, "Jellal..."
Hearing Acrasia address the young man, Mebis's pupils narrowed slightly.
Jellal, the Dark Mage! Like Feng Ye, he was a legendary wizard from hundreds of years ago, but unlike Feng Ye, Jellal was associated with darkness and infamy!
Some called him the bringer of darkness, others claimed he was the devil himself, and there were those who said he traveled the world, taking countless lives, making him the most evil and terrifying wizard!
"You know him, sister?"
Mebis felt a sense of oppression.
Acrasia nodded, "I met him a hundred years ago. He's not as evil as the rumors make him out to be. Like you, he's afflicted with the Contradictory Curse."
When she met Jellal, she didn't know about the Contradictory Curse, and Jellal didn't tell her.
It was only recently that Feng Ye mentioned Jellal's condition when they discussed Mebis's own Contradictory Curse.
Hearing Acrasia's words, Jellal was taken aback for a moment before he looked at Mebis with a surprised expression, recognizing her, "You're the Fairy Tactician?"
Due to the Contradictory Curse, he usually avoided meeting people, but he occasionally saw newspapers and was thus aware of many events happening on the continent.
"Yes, it's me."
Mebis nodded slightly.
Jellal scrutinized Mebis for a few seconds before sighing, "What a pity."
After saying this, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the woods.
Mebis's gaze shifted between Jellal's retreating back and Acrasia, and she couldn't help but ask in a soft voice, "Sister, what's his story?"
Acrasia looked in the direction Jellal had disappeared, "He defied the will of Ancusaram to resurrect his younger brother and was afflicted with the Contradictory Curse. He has been tormented by pain ever since."
"Feng Ye mentioned that Feng Ye once encountered Jellal, and Jellal asked Feng Ye to kill him, but Feng Ye refused."
Acrasia's words caused Mebis to cover her mouth in shock, "He asked Teacher to... kill him?"
"Yes."
Acrasia nodded, "That's how terrifying the Contradictory Curse is."
Mebis looked towards the direction Jellal had disappeared, murmuring, "No wonder he said it was a pity. But can't Teacher break this curse?"
Acrasia shook her head, "Perhaps he doesn't know, or perhaps Feng Ye refused to help him, or maybe... there's some other reason we can't fathom."
