Chapter 67: The True War - Epilogue
Chapter 67: The True War - Epilogue
Liam watched as Zombies surged forward like a tide, flattening the already scattered roadblocks and using some of their numbers to detonate all the Potato Mines in front of the defenses.
About twenty meters from the tall Wall-Nuts, a group of Colossal Zombies emerged from the back of the horde, even trampling over the regular Zombies in their path.
These Zombies were different from the usual Colossal Zombies. They were larger and had cobbled together armor from car parts and building materials, which significantly reduced the effectiveness of the Plants' attacks.
Liam tried using Purge of the Unclean to attack these Colossal Zombies, but their tough hides and some magical resistance meant that each spell only created a small, grayish-white area on their bodies.
Liam focused on attacking one Colossal Zombie's leg. Despite multiple hits leaving a large grayish-white mark and slowing the Zombie down, it simply clawed off the affected area and continued its charge.
Nearby, a team had managed to bring down one or two Colossal Zombies with concentrated fire, but the others quickly filled the gaps.
Seeing the massive bodies of the Zombies charging forward, Liam knew it was time to unleash his full power. He pulled a tube of Psycho Shroom Spores from his belt and scattered them into the air. Then, he pointed his wand at the approaching Colossal Zombies and drew a symbol in the air, chanting in Ancient Viking: "Repel Taint."
The path Liam's wand traced through the spore powder was quickly ignited by Flame, forming a Runic Letter Is made of pale Flame. The simplest meaning of this letter is ice, but it also reflects the beauty and elegance of snow, which can be deceptive and obstructive. On a deeper level, it represents potential delays in plans. Passion has cooled, but it can also signify the calming of anger.
The Flame letter soon transformed into a small, glowing orb the size of a ping-pong ball. Under Liam's command, it flew toward the Colossal Zombies. When it hit three of them clustered together, the orb exploded, releasing a white mist that enveloped them.
The mist rapidly penetrated the Colossal Zombies and the other Zombies around them, causing them to freeze in place. A few seconds later, they turned and began attacking the Zombies beside them.
This sudden betrayal caused chaos among the Zombie horde, and their offensive momentum stalled.
Liam's teammates quickly pulled the somewhat weakened Liam onto the robots and directed them to join the surrounding Plants in taking advantage of the Zombie confusion to increase their firepower, hoping to eliminate as many Zombies as possible.
Despite everyone's best efforts, the wave of Zombies was overwhelming. After all, this time the Zombies had launched a full-scale attack, and their numbers far exceeded those of the humans. After a few minutes, when Liam felt he had recovered enough, an order came from the camp for the front-line teams to abandon the Wall-Nuts and retreat to the trenches.
The Zombie army's assault was relentless, with many small Zombies being hurled over the Wall-Nuts, causing chaos in the rear. Meanwhile, the main force of Zombies took advantage of the teams' distraction to launch a fierce attack on the Wall-Nuts. They surged forward like a green tide, relentlessly pounding the barriers. Several Wall-Nuts had already been destroyed, and many unmanned robots had been lost while plugging the gaps.
So, the camp's commander decided to consolidate the forces to better defend. Liam's squad, under the cover of Cherry Bomb and Jalapeno, successfully retreated to the trench area to re-establish their position.
The unguarded Wall-Nuts were quickly destroyed, and despite the Plants' fierce attacks, Liam saw countless Zombies fall every second. However, the Zombies' full-scale assault was still relentless, and the trenches designed to slow them down were soon filled with the bodies of fallen Zombies, making them unrecognizable.
The Zombies' attacks came in waves, with the majority of them suffering heavy casualties on their way to the human defenses. The various Plants' firepower formed a dense and continuous barrage, creating a bloody symphony of war.
Liam continuously unleashed various magical attacks against the powerful, mutated Zombies. Although he often overexerted himself to the point of collapsing, each time he recovered, he would get back up and continue casting spells to aid his comrades.
During this process, Liam felt his magical abilities rapidly improving. He could now cast several of his frequently used spells twice as fast as before. He also accumulated a significant amount of magical combat experience, making him feel that his battle experience now rivaled that of many clerical officials in the Ministry of Magic.
Finally, in the afternoon, the elite Zombies in the rear could no longer tolerate the lack of progress. Under the protection of a group of Colossal Zombies, they reached the front lines, hoping to break through the human defenses with their formidable strength and the protection of their guards.
Zombies were still Zombies, and even the elite ones, despite having some intelligence, were not as thorough in their planning as humans. Upon discovering that the High-Command Zombie had reached the front lines, the hidden Battle Mode Cob Cannons, which had been rapidly grown, began firing at the elite Zombies' position. At the same time, the weak points in the defensive walls were opened, and Dave, leading his Giant Robot Squad, charged toward the elite Zombies. Nearby combat teams also rushed to support Dave, clearing the obstacles in front of him.
Liam's squad joined this larger force. Seeing the layers of Zombies in front of the elite ones about to collide with the robot forces, Liam pulled a glass bottle containing Sunlight Crystals from his waist.
There was no time to carefully open the bottle, so Liam smashed it against the metal parts of a robot.
With a crack, the glass bottle shattered. Ignoring the shards, Liam grabbed the Sunlight Crystals with his left hand and clenched them tightly, pointing his Ancient Viking wand at the Zombie line and chanting the spell: "Sunlight Purge."
A rune of light floated from Liam's hand, which was gripping the Sunlight Crystals, and transformed into a mini sun emitting a gentle sunlight.
Liam struggled to raise his left arm toward the front lines. The humans, bathed in this sunlight, felt a warm and invigorating sensation, their spirits lifted. In contrast, the Zombies were harmed by the light's power and had to abandon their resistance against the charging human army. They covered their vulnerable parts with their arms to avoid further damage, greatly aiding the human forces' advance.
Finally, they broke through the layers of Zombie protection and reached the elite Zombies, who were the commanders. The final battle was about to begin, and the outcome would determine the victory or defeat.
