Chapter 67: The Sense of Security that Xue Jing Brings
Chapter 67: The Sense of Security that Xue Jing Brings
Before anyone could react, the cockroach-man's head exploded under Xue Jing's fist.
In a surprising turn, the headless cockroach-man stirred, its six insectile legs extending as it lunged at Xue Jing.
"Tsk, just like a cockroach," Xue Jing frowned, leaping backward to dodge the creature's deadly embrace. In mid-air, he delivered a powerful kick.
With the Twin Birthright's power surging within him, his kick snapped two of the cockroach-man's legs, sending its entire body flying backward.
Crack!
Without pausing, Xue Jing activated the Twin Birthright's speed, bending low and flashing forward with blinding speed to appear before the cockroach-man. His eyes narrowed as he reached into the gaping hole where the creature's head had once been.
Cockroaches don't die instantly from losing their heads. Even without a head, they can survive for eight to nine days before starving to death.
Their true weakness lies not in their head, but in the nerve cluster below the throat and above the chest, in the esophagus.
Xue Jing felt a sticky, repulsive sensation on his palm as he reached inside. Gritting his teeth against the nausea, he groped around and seemed to grasp something soft.
The cockroach-man's body convulsed violently, and it began to struggle frantically. Several of its sharp legs raked across Xue Jing's body, leaving deep, bone-exposing wounds.
Xue Jing's heart hardened, and instead of dodging, he channeled his energy into defense. Holding onto that soft object, he lifted the headless cockroach-man and slammed it into the ground, pinning it down.
In the shadows cast by the lighter's flickering flame, black streams of energy flowed from the shadows toward Xue Jing's palm. Within the creature's body, unseen by others, a pitch-black flame burst to life.
The cockroach-man's body swelled slightly before stiffening. Its convulsions slowed, and it gradually became still, no longer moving.
Pei Youguang, holding the lighter, watched Xue Jing's actions. In the dim light, he thought he saw tendrils of black flame licking at the monster's body, but the darkness made it hard to be sure if it was an illusion.
"Wow..." he murmured, "Is that the Yin of the Eight Gods' Qinyue?"
As the cockroach-man lay motionless, Xue Jing withdrew his hand from its body.
"I-is it... over?"
The onlookers stared, dumbfounded, at the young man standing amidst the carnage, his body covered in wounds and drenched in putrid, greenish-black fluid.
The terrifying creature, like something out of a horror movie, lay motionless on the ground, finally dead.
"It's dead! It's dead!"
Someone cheered in relief.
Many still had the foul-smelling green fluid on their faces from the cockroach-man's exploded head, but they didn't care. The thrill of survival had them exhilarated.
"Who is that guy? Which dojo is he from? I'm going to donate money to his dojo, a million yuan!"
"A million? I'll donate two million, and I want to recognize him as my dry brother! If not, I'll recognize him as my godfather!"
"Pei Er Shao, Pei Second Young Master, come on, take us over there and introduce us to him!"
Someone pushed Pei Youguang, who was standing nearby in a daze, urging him to make the introduction.
Li Zhaoyuan, Zhang Daqing, and the other surviving dojo disciples stared at Xue Jing, their eyes wide.
Zhang Daqing reached out and patted Li Zhaoyuan's shoulder, giving him a thumbs-up.
"Old Li, from this day forward, I'm convinced of your bravery."
"To dare provoke such a figure, you've got guts. In the entire martial arts circle of Qingcheng, who wouldn't praise you for your audacity?"
Li Zhaoyuan swallowed, his legs feeling weak.
What had he just done to that guy?
He had... touched his hand...
And his bones still ached from it.
Li Zhaoyuan's face suddenly took on a pensive expression.
"Old Zhang, I might have just hit the jackpot."
Zhang Daqing gave him a strange look. "What are you talking about?"
"Well, this Brother Xue... he's definitely going places, right?" Li Zhaoyuan stroked his chin.
Zhang Daqing rolled his eyes. "No doubt about that."
"So, what do you think? Wasn't my brief exchange with him just now incredibly intense, with me only narrowly losing in the end? A valiant effort, wouldn't you say?"
Li Zhaoyuan patted his arm proudly.
Zhang Daqing stared at him, eyes wide in disbelief. "You... do you actually plan to brag about this later? Have you no shame left?"
Li Zhaoyuan chuckled.
...
"Ying Yang..." Ye Chenlin approached the first corpse, his face filled with sorrow.
As he spoke, everyone else also snapped out of their euphoria from surviving, realizing that several of their friends had perished.
"Why... why did this happen? Where did this monster come from, and why did the power go out at Rui Zhu Hotel, causing even our phones to stop working?"
"This was definitely a targeted, well-planned assassination attempt! I will make sure my dad gets to the bottom of this!"
Ye Chenlin shouted angrily, his face contorted with fury.
He felt a sense of dread within.
The attendees of this banquet were no ordinary people, yet several had lost their lives. As the organizer of the event, he would undoubtedly bear a portion, if not most, of the blame.
Even with his father being a governing council member, this incident would be hard to explain away!
He shot a glance at Pei Tiancheng, who stood nearby, and felt a surge of anger.
Damn him! What a bold claim, saying 'With me here, nothing will happen'! Bullshit!
Recalling how Pei Tiancheng had jumped away from the monster, causing several people behind him to be killed, Ye Chenlin's heart filled with bitterness.
Those martial artist bodyguards were useless too... if not for that young man, everyone here might have perished.
Pei Tiancheng wanted to say something but ultimately remained silent, letting out a sigh instead.
He never expected... that a simple banquet, even with a death the day before, would turn out like this. He had thought he could easily handle a deranged killer, but who could have foreseen such a terrifying monster appearing?
At that moment, a tall figure, drenched in blood and exuding an oppressive aura, approached them.
Everyone's eyes widened as they looked at him, wanting to say something, but the powerful presence he emanated left them speechless.
"Everyone," Xue Jing said calmly, his tone unchanged. "Although I've killed that beast, we're not entirely out of danger yet, so we must remain cautious."
"Based on my speculation, the sudden failure of all electrical equipment suggests an electromagnetic pulse, which is most likely man-made."
"And if the EMP was man-made, then that monster was likely released here intentionally, rather than appearing by accident."
Everyone listened quietly, none daring to interrupt.
"These matters will be left for you to investigate afterward. I'm just a security guard, and my duty is to ensure your safety for now."
"Let's go. I'll lead you out of here."
After speaking, Xue Jing began walking toward the door.
Despite his wounds and bloodstained appearance, his words carried weight with the crowd, who had just witnessed his formidable might.
Everyone quickly followed suit.
At that moment, the only source of security and comfort they felt was in staying close to this young man.
