Chapter 67: The Second Floating Island Explosion
Chapter 67: The Second Floating Island Explosion
"Plan three, huh?"
Morning Star used the [Astral Beacon] to investigate what Minister Hilton, the head of intelligence, was up to.
After confirming he wasn't doing anything significant, she nodded. "Counter, I support your decision. But you must be careful. I can come back to life if I die, but you won't have that luxury!"
"Don't worry, I keep that in mind all the time," Su Yu smiled.
He took out the [Hearthstone] from his necklace.
The [Hearthstone] already had a small round hole, so he found a thin thread to string it and wear it as a necklace. This way, he could use the [Hearthstone] to escape at the first sign of danger.
After some thought, he took out another thread and strung the [Tina Garcia's Amulet] around his wrist.
([Tina Garcia's Amulet]: +3 Luck, effective even when stored in a bag.)
Su Yu wasn't sure if the amulet would work inside his necklace, given that he couldn't see the attribute panel in the real world. So, he decided to wear it for peace of mind.
Once he finished, he drank several Master-level Mana Potions to refill his mana, then activated the [Invisibility] spell and cautiously made his way toward the northern part of the city.
As he moved, Su Yu saw the streets filled with panicked, fleeing Skrullians.
Behind him, smoke and dust blotted out the sky, accompanied by the crackling of flames. He couldn't count how many innocent civilians had been killed.
High-ranking experts and wealthy individuals in mechs were converging on the explosion site, the sky dotted with hundreds of figures.
Su Yu dared not linger, keeping his head down as he hurried along.
The slums were located in the northern part of Trenna City. From where Su Yu was, it was a 20-kilometer journey north to reach the sealed floating island.
As he progressed, he noticed that the closer he got to the island's seal, the fewer people there were on the roads. Occasionally, he would encounter pets that had transformed into monsters.
Su Yu witnessed a three-meter-tall Electabuzz leaping between buildings. Its fur shimmered with a faint purple glow, and its eyes emitted an eerie purple light. Its claws were stained with blood, indicating it had killed many Skrullians.
Fortunately, none of the monsters, including the Electabuzz, noticed Su Yu. He slipped through the layers of beasts, gradually approaching the edge of the island's seal.
He also saw several ticket collectors, but he managed to avoid them, saving himself a fair amount of money.
The floating island was now enveloped in a gray, spherical barrier about 300 to 400 meters high. The barrier's surface was uneven, but it effectively sealed the chaotic psychic energy within.
Outside the massive barrier, many professionals were teaming up to slay monsters, harvesting materials from their bodies and absorbing the psychic energy that dispersed after their deaths.
Su Yu approached the massive gray barrier and stopped about 30 to 40 meters away.
He transmitted a message to Morning Star, who was still in her "Pikachu" form: "Pika Pika, can we break this seal?"
"What 'Pika'?" Morning Star's head popped up with a question mark.
But she quickly responded, "Hold on, I'll check the thickness of this barrier."
Meanwhile, in the Speaker's Mansion in the western part of the city, Speaker Cas was holding a press conference.
_Click, click, click_
The rapid shutter clicks and blinding flashes of cameras filled the room.
Cas sat calmly at the podium. "I have just detailed the dangers of 'Unit One' to all of you."
"Now, we have successfully completed the operation to eliminate 'Number One.' We carried out a precise strike on his hideout and managed to take him down! May the gods protect us all, and may their light shield the Runkte Alliance."
The audience erupted into enthusiastic applause.
After the applause died down, the host stood up and said, "Next, we will have a ten-minute Q&A session. Any journalists who would like to ask a question, please raise your hand."
The journalists in the audience immediately raised their hands, some even standing up from their seats.
"Alright, you there." The host chose a journalist known for his measured words.
The journalist stood up and asked, "Mr. Chairman, I want to ask if the cost of eliminating 'Number One' was really worth it?"
"Of course it was!" Chairman Kas affirmed. "As I mentioned earlier, 'Number One' used treachery to destroy the floating island, which not only significantly hindered our conquest of Earth but also caused tens of thousands of residents to die from 'Psycho Overload Syndrome.'
Eliminating 'Number One' aligns with our nation's best interests and was the best choice we could make."
"But!" The microphone was passed to another journalist, who stood up with excitement. "According to the latest casualty report, over a thousand people have died and more than ten thousand are missing in the slums. Who will be held responsible for these lives?"
Chairman Kas smiled. "This is a necessary sacrifice made by the common people for the nation. If 'Number One' were still alive, he would have killed tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of our citizens in the future. For the sake of the nation, these sacrifices are entirely worth it."
After saying this, Kas clapped his hands. "The families of those who were injured or killed during the operation to eliminate 'Number One' will receive substantial compensation. I hope everyone can unite and face the challenges ahead."
"Roar!"
"Roar!"
Before Kas could finish speaking, two loud dragon roars echoed from the northern sky.
The ground beneath the press conference began to shake violently, and the tables and chairs toppled over, creating a chaotic scene.
"What's happening?"
Kas was taken aback and quickly flew out the window into the sky.
Looking north, he saw two massive creatures hovering in the air. They resembled the dragons he had encountered during his studies in the Singer civilization.
One of the dragons was entirely blue, with a wingspan of over 40 meters, while the other had a wingspan of about 30 meters and shimmered with starlight.
From Kas's perspective, he could see the empire's strongest fighter, the god-tier psychic master Stym, transform into a beam of light and fly toward the two dragons.
However, before he could reach them, the dragons flashed with white light and vanished without a trace.
Kas breathed a sigh of relief, but his heart soon raced again.
The dragons had disappeared at the edge of the floating island's seal.
At that moment, a glaring, massive light spot appeared on the protective shield of the floating island's seal.
Boom!
With a deafening explosion, the massive light spot burst, and the protective shield, unable to withstand the force, was instantly shattered!
Boom!
Another thunderous explosion followed!
The explosive psychic energy erupted like a ignited gas canister, shattering the protective shield. The massive explosion instantly engulfed several surrounding neighborhoods, and the entire city trembled violently.
