Chapter 67: The Craftsman's Morning
Chapter 67: The Craftsman's Morning
Early in the morning, the young craftsman Joel took out the wooden boards he had left behind the night before and began planing them on the workbench.
With the blessing of his crafting skills, he worked swiftly and skillfully.
Before long, he finished his task.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead, Joel breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that his master was still asleep and wouldn't scold him for leaving work unfinished the day before. He removed his brown apron and sat by his workbench.
Joel poured himself a cup of hot tea and took a sip, savoring the warmth.
He lingered in the same spot for a while, enjoying the moment.
Only when the tea in his cup had cooled down did he suddenly remember something important.
"Ah!"
Joel jumped up from his seat.
He casually tossed the cup onto the table, nearly spilling its contents.
Quickly catching the cup, Joel headed to the front hall of the craftsman's cottage and changed into his outdoor clothes.
"I almost forgot, I need to water the plants too!"
"I wonder how Lin Sai felt using my arrows. Dan mentioned that she even killed a beast with them."
Joel couldn't help but chuckle at the thought.
But his smile soon faded as his face clouded over.
The expedition team had set out over twenty days ago.
Dan, Alan, and Torch had returned over ten days ago, with two of them severely injured. Although they had received treatment from the town's physician and were now able to move around, they wouldn't be able to participate in hunting or patrols for a while.
According to Torch, Lin Sai had also suffered significant injuries during the expedition, and at first, she couldn't even move her arms.
"If it were me..."
"I wouldn't let Lin Sai go adventuring alone in that situation."
From a craftsman's perspective, Joel disagreed with Dan's assessment. But then he remembered encouraging Lin Sai to go to Black Mountain, and he began to agonize over the decision.
Finally, Joel hurried to the southern part of town.
He opened the door to the plant scholar's wooden cabin, or rather, Lin Sai's cabin now.
On the most noticeable yellow wooden table by the entrance, he found Lin Sai's plant-caring notes.
Joel vaguely remembered which plants needed watering today.
But to ensure no mistakes, he carefully flipped through the notes, checked the records, and precisely watered the corresponding plants. He then buried a few black, pellet-like fertilizer pellets in the soil.
After completing his friend's request, Joel looked up at the ceiling.
Through the glass walls of the greenhouse, he could see the sun hanging low in the sky.
The old man at home wouldn't wake up until noon, so Joel had plenty of time.
The young craftsman had a plan.
He placed the plant-caring notes on the nearby table and turned into the study.
"Let me think, where did I see it..."
Joel stopped in front of a bookshelf and soon found a collection of adventure stories.
Among the other books in the study, he had no interest in them, except for these tales of legendary adventures.
He sat down and began reading with great enthusiasm.
Clang!
After an unknown period, Joel, who was engrossed in his book, heard the sound of the front door latch being opened.
"Is that Torch? Today I..." Joel initially thought it was Torch, his neighbor, coming to help, a common occurrence. But when he reached the front porch and saw who it was, he exclaimed, "Lin Sai? You're back!"
The person who had returned after over twenty days without a word was indeed Lin Sai.
Compared to her state over half a month ago, Lin Sai was now covered in dust, with dried grass, dead branches, and insect fluids stuck to her.
Only her face, which was the only clean part of her, could be distinguished.
Joel hurriedly walked over and asked, "Are you okay? I heard you got injured?"
"Dan told the town that you went to the Black Mountain World alone, and nothing major happened, right?"
"I did go there, but that place isn't very friendly right now. I need to inform Uncle An Rui about some of the special phenomena I encountered."
Standing in the foyer of Finn's wooden cabin, Lindsay saw Joel first and realized he was helping her with the plants.
He thanked him briefly and rushed to the glass greenhouse.
He planted the two potatoes he had collected.
Then, without time for anything else, he turned and headed outside.
Throughout the process, Joel witnessed Lindsay retrieving two potatoes from the void.
The young craftsman was initially surprised, but soon an idea came to him:
"Wait... is this a spatial ability? Lindsay, did you ascend as a merchant? Or... or are you a Spatial Mage?"
As a craftsman, Joel had learned a lot about item crafting and was aware of the different Awakened's equipment needs.
Among the skills, only the merchant's Merchandise Storage and the Spatial Mage's expertise in spatial abilities could produce such an effect.
If it were a Spatial Mage, then the long-sealed Hidden Frontier might be reopened!
Did Lindsay learn the abilities of a Spatial Mage somewhere?
Joel couldn't believe his eyes, but Lindsay shook her head, seeing his expectant gaze.
Having already revealed her specialty in battle, she saw no need to continue concealing her ascended skill:
"It's neither of those professions, Joel."
"I awakened a rather unique ability. It differs from that of a merchant or a Spatial Mage, but it provides me with a convenient portable bag."
As Lindsay explained, she also stepped out of the cabin and headed north toward the town.
He had hurried back, only greeting his godmother, Red Moon, at the town entrance before rushing to tend to the potato seedlings. Now, he was off to the Lord's Manor to tell An Rui everything he had witnessed in the snowfields.
Lindsay had many urgent tasks to attend to, and she was indeed busy! Joel noticed Lindsay's haste, and although the young craftsman felt disappointed, he couldn't help but ask as he followed Lindsay:
"Lindsay, what did you see over there?"
"Beasts!" Lindsay wouldn't hide this from her friend. "There are beasts in the Black Mountain World trying to enter our side, but a frost gale froze them into ice sculptures, so there haven't been any major issues these past few years."
Joel immediately realized the importance of this information:
"Wait, the Treant controlling the Ice Boar..."
Lindsay nodded, confirming his guess:
"Yes, it probably came from Black Mountain, but it's the only lucky one."
"..."
Joel walked alongside Lindsay, and after some thought, he asked:
"Lindsay, do you still need my help?"
"If there's nothing else, I plan to go home and tell my teacher about this."
Lindsay wouldn't hold Joel back:
"I don't have much to do here. You should go back quickly."
"We can discuss the details later."
Lindsay bid Joel farewell and headed alone toward the Lord's Manor.
The sun was setting in the west, and it was getting late.
After nearly a month of arduous outdoor travel and transplanting the wild potatoes, Lindsay's attribute panel displayed a new line of text.
