Chapter 67: Ron, You're a Clever Little Git!
Chapter 67: Ron, You’re a Clever Little Git!
Malfoy's strange behavior left Harry and the others thoroughly confused.
Ivan, however, understood what was going on. He hadn't expected the Affinity Talent to be so effective, but he wasn't sure if it would last.
However, Ivan didn't remain happy for long, as the bad news from Malfoy made him realize they were running out of time.
"What do we do now? The Ministry of Magic is coming today! What about Charlie? Hasn’t he replied yet?" Harry was outright panicking, his voice low but urgent, despite being in the Great Hall.
"He hasn’t, I don’t know when Charlie will write back." Ron was equally anxious and suggested, "Maybe we can hide Norbert somewhere."
"But Norbert is so big, there’s no place to hide him." Hermione frowned.
"Maybe we can sink him in the lake!" Ron said confidently. "I mean, we can put a bamboo tube in Norbert’s mouth so he won’t drown."
Ivan gave him a strange look.
Ron, you’re a clever little git!
However, Ron was right about one thing. If Charlie didn’t arrive in time, they would have to hide Norbert.
Given Norbert’s size, sinking him in the lake was one of the options.
If Dumbledore could cast an extra-large Bubble-Head Charm and convince the merpeople to be neighbors with a sleeping dragon for a few days, it might work.
Or maybe Dumbledore would find it simpler to use a Vanishing Spell?
Ivan was tempted to comment on how the Aurors always seemed to arrive just as things were wrapping up.
When did the Ministry of Magic become so efficient?
After a hurried breakfast, Ivan joined the others for their Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Despite Professor Quirrell’s sudden disappearance, they hadn’t been told the class was canceled.
Clearly, another professor would take over.
As Ivan had expected, a familiar figure in a black robe walked in just before class began.
The moment Harry saw Snape, he knew the class was going to be terrible.
However, no matter how much Harry disliked it, it was of no use. Snape smoothly made his way to the front, set down his textbook, swept his gaze across the room, paused briefly on Ivan, and then spoke.
"Due to the fact that Professor Quirrell is considered the primary suspect in the murder of a Unicorn, the theft of Potions, and the assault on the gamekeeper, the Ministry of Magic has issued an arrest warrant. I will be temporarily taking over Defense Against the Dark Arts for first to third years until the end of the term!"
The sudden announcement sent the young wizards into an uproar.
What? Professor Quirrell is the killer? How is that possible?
Quirrell had always seemed weak and good-natured, making it hard for many of the young wizards to accept his new identity.
How could such a person be a Dark Wizard? He was so cowardly that he fainted at the Halloween feast.
"So, the first lesson I will teach you in Defense Against the Dark Arts is not to be deceived by appearances. Many evil Dark Wizards are skilled at weaving lies. You had better be more cautious", Snape said mercilessly, without a care for the shock on the children’s faces.
Several Gryffindor students were so frightened that their faces turned pale, as they had once thought Quirrell was easy to bully and had secretly teased him during class. Now, they were very worried that Quirrell might come back to take revenge.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were also surprised when they heard the news, but they quickly accepted it. After all, they had long noticed that something was wrong with Quirrell.
Ivan was even less surprised. He had always known what kind of person Quirrell was. He was somewhat taken aback, however, by how quickly Dumbledore had convinced the Ministry to mark the missing Quirrell as the culprit. He wondered if some crucial evidence had been found in Quirrell's office.
"Quiet down!" The noise from the students below made Snape frown repeatedly. He raised his voice to interrupt their discussion.
"Next, we will start the first class. Take out your books. We will be covering Chapter Three on page nine today", Snape said, then suddenly seemed to remember something and continued.
"Additionally, I need to inform you that the first-year afternoon Transfiguration class has been canceled."
Hermione raised her hand high, wanting to ask why, but Snape harshly reprimanded her.
"Don't ask me the reason. It's not something you need to know!"
The morning Defense Against the Dark Arts class left Ivan very satisfied, as Snape was a much more competent teacher than Quirrell. At the very least, he was genuinely teaching them relevant knowledge, rather than just reading from the textbook repeatedly like Quirrell had.
Ivan also learned from Hermione that the affinity talent he had been emitting seemed to be weakening, or perhaps it was becoming more internalized. At least it wasn't as obvious as it had been in the morning.
This was good news for Ivan, as while his previous talent was powerful, even Harry and Ron had noticed it. This not only failed to achieve the desired effect but also made others more cautious.
At lunchtime, another piece of good news came. Ron received a letter from Charlie, stating that he and a few friends would come at three o'clock in the afternoon to take the dragon away. Norbert was thus spared from being drowned in the lake or "vanished."
Thanks to the cancellation of the afternoon Transfiguration class, they were able to find time to send Norbert off.
By the time they finished their meal and arrived at Hagrid's hut, it was already two o'clock in the afternoon. Norbert was still sleeping by the fireplace, showing no sign of waking up. It seemed that Professor Mcgonagall had come by to reinforce the magic.
Fluffy was waiting outside the hut, not daring to go in. Upon seeing Ivan, Fluffy immediately pounced on him, whining and complaining about Norbert occupying the house.
Ivan comforted Fluffy for a while and then checked the bandage on Fluffy's leg, which had clearly been treated by Madam Pomfrey.
As it neared three o'clock, Ivan saw six figures riding brooms flying towards them from the sky.
"It's Charlie, he's here!" Ron exclaimed excitedly, waving his hand.
Upon seeing Ron, the people in the sky quickly descended. The leader had fiery red hair, freckles all over his face, and skin tanned brown from the sun, clearly indicating his time in Romania.
Dragon Research was no easy task. It required not only extensive knowledge of dragons but also the ability to endure hardship. Sometimes, a bit of strength was also necessary.
