Chapter 67: Phone Call
Chapter 67: Phone Call
Miss Joy stood in awe, staring at the three Ride Sheep Pokemon frolicking energetically on the grass before her.
She had never seen Pokemon quite like these.
They executed moves with effortless ease, as casually as walking and eating. With the slightest movement, they unleashed a plethora of techniques without any signs of strain.
And each move was executed with apparent mastery.
The grassy terrain, the Leaf Blade in their mouths, and these three Ride Sheep...
Was this normal?
After a long pause, Miss Joy finally spoke, "I'm afraid I can't offer an evaluation on this matter."
Naoki: "..."
Miss Joy continued, "However, there's no need to worry. From the looks of these Ride Sheep, the energy within their bodies doesn't seem to be causing any adverse effects."
"And their physical examination didn't reveal any issues. These Ride Sheep are very healthy. Just ensure they get plenty of exercise to expend their excess energy, and they should return to their normal physiques soon enough."
Hearing this, Naoki breathed a sigh of relief.
That was good news indeed.
"So, as long as I help them release this extra energy daily, they should be fine?" Naoki asked.
Miss Joy nodded gently, "That seems to be the case for now. In doing so, you'll also be helping them practice those moves, effectively training them to become adept at using the techniques they've already grasped."
Perhaps that Leaf Blade they were holding was proof that these Ride Sheep had mastered the move to perfection, Miss Joy mused.
"Alright," Naoki said politely, expressing his gratitude. "Thank you very much, Miss Joy."
Miss Joy smiled softly and began to pack up her examination tools. Just then, she remembered something else.
"Oh, right!"
Naoki: "Hmm?"
Miss Joy explained, "Aside from what I mentioned earlier, I once heard a theory from a Pokemon Professor."
"Pokemon evolution is actually a massive leap in the life of a Pokemon. The depth of the foundation built before evolution determines the strength of the Pokemon afterward. The greater the foundation, the stronger the evolved form."
"It's similar to how a Magikarp evolves into a Gyarados."
"This grass-attribute energy they've accumulated should also count as part of that foundation, right? After these three Ride Sheep evolve, who knows how powerful they might become!"
Was that true?
Naoki paused, contemplating Miss Joy's words.
As Miss Joy concluded her house call and Naoki paid the consultation fee, she bid farewell and rode off on her Motostoke Pokemon.
Naoki, meanwhile, watched the three Ride Sheep running around and shook his head helplessly.
Just then, a raindrop fell from the sky.
Naoki froze, then looked up. Dark clouds had gathered above the ranch without him noticing.
With that first raindrop, it was as if a switch had been flipped. More raindrops began to fall, turning into a gentle shower.
It was raining.
The three Ride Sheep, who had been bouncing around on the grass, paused as they felt the raindrops. They looked up at the sky and then scampered over to the shelter, standing beneath it and peering out with curious eyes.
A raindrop landed on Mini-Nymph's face as she napped in the grass.
She blinked, then looked up to see Butterfree flying by and landing on a wooden box under the eaves of the house.
"Mama!"
Frost Fairy, who had been chasing after butterflies with the Salt Rocks in the bushes, was soaked. She let out a startled cry before hurrying back to the Salt House with them, taking shelter inside and watching the rain.
Outside the chicken coop, Brood was hard at work when he felt the raindrops. He quickly began ushering the hens into the coop.
Even the Three Bees ceased their honey-gathering, flapping their wings to return to their hive, waiting quietly for the rain to stop.
Naoki was surprised by the sudden rainfall.
How did this happen? It was clear skies just now!
Then, as if realizing something, he turned and saw Dragonite not far away, staring at the sky with an excited expression.
Naoki rushed over through the rain and asked, "You did it?"
Dragonite was thrilled. "Roar!"
"That's wonderful!"
Naoki was genuinely happy for Dragonite.
The first attempt at Rain Dance wasn't perfect, and that was why the rain only lasted for about three minutes before stopping.
The dark clouds dispersed, revealing the sun once more.
But Dragonite was still elated.
After learning Dragon Tail, it believed that with enough practice, it could perform an even more impressive Rain Dance!
Just as Naoki had said, it would blanket the whole world in its rain!
Dragonite gazed up at the vast sky, its heart filled with ambition.
Just then, the video phone placed at the end of the bed suddenly rang.
"Hmm? Who could be calling at this time?" Naoki wondered aloud.
He washed the egg mixture off his hands and walked over to answer the call.
The next second, Dr. Olin's spirited face appeared on the screen.
She still wore her white lab coat, with a tooth necklace around her neck, her hair loose, and a smile on her face as she looked toward him.
Behind her was a backdrop of futuristic silver-white metal walls, seemingly from some research institute.
"Long time no see, Naoki," Dr. Olin greeted with a smile.
"Long time no see, Dr. Olin," Naoki replied politely.
Just then, a man walked into the frame.
He was a man in his thirties, wearing a tight-fitting futuristic uniform, a short beard on his chin, and a handsome face that betrayed a hint of weathering.
He walked up to Dr. Olin and turned his gaze toward Naoki as well.
Dr. Olin glanced at the man and introduced him, "This is my husband and partner, Dr. Fortu. He researches a different field from me; I study the [past], while he focuses on the [future]."
Naoki was well aware of the man's identity, and he greeted him, "Hello, Dr. Fortu."
A smile appeared on Fortu's face as he replied, "Hello, Naoki. I've heard about you and Goulerton from Olin."
Dr. Olin asked, "We called to inquire about Goulerton's current situation. How has it been doing lately?"
Naoki nodded, "It's doing well. It eats and sleeps like any other Pokemon."
Hearing this, Dr. Olin nodded thoughtfully and then asked, "During this time, has it shown any signs of aggression or attempted to attack other Pokemon?"
"No, its temperament is very gentle. Hmm, how should I put it?" Naoki paused, an image of Motorizard coming to mind. "It gives me a similar feeling to Motorizard; they're both very obedient, sensible, and well-behaved."
Motorizard was renowned for its gentle nature and affinity for humans, which was why it had become a ubiquitous means of transportation in the Hisui region.
Hearing this, Dr. Olin and Dr. Fortu exchanged a glance, a hint of confusion in their eyes.
They remembered the first time they had summoned that Goulerton; it had directly attacked them and nearly destroyed the research institute.
What was going on? Was the Goulerton that Naoki was talking about truly the same one they remembered?
After a moment's thought, Dr. Olin asked, "And how does it behave around other people?"
"Well, I don't think there's been any change," Naoki replied. "Not long ago, I took Goulerton to a local festival, and it stayed by my side the entire time, helping me out. It didn't show any signs of stress or agitation around the crowd."
This left Dr. Olin even more perplexed.
After a moment of contemplation, she said, "Thank you for the information, Naoki. I think that's all for today's call. If you encounter anything else, feel free to contact us anytime via the video phone."
"Okay," Naoki said, his mouth opening slightly as he looked at Dr. Olin and Dr. Fortu on the screen.
Since both doctors were present, it seemed that Papa would indeed lose both his parents at once.
Was there any way to change this outcome?
Naoki was about to say something, but before he could, the call was abruptly ended.
Naoki fell into deep thought.
Did he want to help alter the fate of the two doctors?
In pursuit of their dreams, they had summoned the paradoxical Pokemon from the "past" and "future" into the "present," disrupting the ecological balance and allowing violent Pokemon to invade the Hisui region's ecosystem.
Although Dr. AI later requested the player, Papa, Nimo, and Peony to help shut down the time machine in Zone 0, some paradoxical Pokemon had already made their way to the Hisui region.
Naoki disagreed with the doctors' dreams, but judging from the actions of AI, who had inherited their emotions, perhaps in their final moments, the doctors had also regretted their actions.
This was likely why AI had made the decision to ask for help from the player carrying Goulerton to shut down the time machine.
Meanwhile, in the depths of the Great Pit of Hisui, at the Fourth Observation Station...
After the call ended, Dr. Olin and Dr. Fortu stepped outside, gazing into the distance at a valley filled with flashing thunder and lightning, and not far away, the lazy figure of a Goulerton lying in the grass, eyes closed as it basked in the sun.
But neither could gain the upper hand, and in the end, it seemed they had reached some sort of agreement, each occupying half of the territory.
Dr. Fortu stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Miltank possess intelligence and emotions akin to modern-day Pokemon. To make them obedient, do they need to be defeated and earn recognition?"
However, Dr. Olin didn't seem to agree with this viewpoint.
"Naoki's Goulerton hasn't undergone battle capture, and that young man doesn't seem to be a powerful trainer either."
"Hmm." Dr. Fortu pondered, stroking his beard.
After a long silence, he spoke up. "What about bringing Piper over to try? That kid loves Pokemon, right? Let him live with the Goulerton and Miltank, gradually getting to know each other. Perhaps one day, those two Pokemon will accept him."
But halfway through his suggestion, Dr. Fortu shook his head. "No, that won't do. Zone 0 is too dangerous."
"Let's just continue the research for now!" Dr. Olin said to her husband.
Aside from the Goulerton and Miltank, several other paradoxical Pokemon had been summoned as well.
Creatures like Kingambit, Howliper, Landbrasier, Ferrothorn, Ferrovalkyrie, and Rumblemoon, to name a few.

After lunch, Naoki didn't head out immediately. Instead, he sat at his desk, sorting through the ranch's account books.
The rock salt produced by Salt Rocks and the milk from Ride Sheep yielded significant profits, and the mushrooms from the cave added to his growing wealth. Naoki had been saving up quite a sum lately.
As his money continued to grow, it was almost overflowing from his drawers. Naoki planned to head into town to apply for a bank card to deposit his savings.
"Hmm, I might as well pay a visit to Cheri and see if there are any more facilities I can build," Naoki thought.
After some contemplation, he decided to focus on perfecting the infrastructure of the ranch first.
The Three Bees had their hive, the Ride Sheep had their pen, and the chicken coop and Salt House were already in place.
All that was missing was a pen for Wooloo and a Pokemon cottage for Audino.
These two Pokemon were not native to the Paldea region, so they couldn't be caught in the wild. They would either have to be imported from other regions or purchased from Happy Ranch.
In addition to these, he could also build residences for other Pokemon.
A meadow for Tropius, a field of sunflowers for Eldegoss, an orchard for Ribombee, and a house for Chansey...
Although wild Chansey were rare, what if he happened to encounter one someday? Chansey eggs were more nutritious and delicious than regular eggs, suitable for both humans and Pokemon.
Moreover, he would also need to buy a television, a refrigerator, and an air conditioner.
With a refrigerator, food could be stored for longer, and he could even make ice cream and popsicles.
With a television, he could spend his quiet, sleepless nights curled up in bed with a bunch of Pokemon, watching TV.
As for the air conditioner, it was a necessity for life.
From the original owner's memories, Naoki knew that the Paldea region could get scorching hot during the summer.
Without an air conditioner, staying in the wooden house would be unbearable.
Just thinking about that sticky, sweaty feeling made Naoki uncomfortable.
Therefore, installing an air conditioner was a must before summer arrived.
With a clear plan in mind, Naoki rode his Goulerton into town.
He first went to apply for a bank card and then made his way to Cheri's Forest Cottage.
When Naoki arrived, Cheri was tending to a wounded Passimian, wrapping its wounds with a bandage.
Noticing Naoki's surprised gaze, she explained with a smile, "Ever since I rescued a blue-feathered Anger from a nearby forest, injured Pokemon have been coming to me for treatment from time to time."
As she finished speaking, Cheri gently patted the Passimian, her voice soft and soothing. "There, all done. Now, off you go!"
The Passimian scratched its head with its claw, looking at the butterfly-shaped bandage, before scurrying away with a couple of chirps.
Cheri watched its retreating figure until it disappeared from view.
Just as she turned to speak to Naoki, the Passimian suddenly dashed back, placing a berry in Cheri's hand before rushing off again.
Cheri smiled at the berry in her palm, then carefully tucked it away. Turning back to Naoki, she asked, "What facility are you thinking of building this time?"
