Chapter 665: Mister Lanchi, You're Under Arrest
Chapter 665: Mister Lanchi, You're Under Arrest
As the crazed Lisancey suddenly stopped her shrill shrieking, seemingly returning to her senses and collapsing onto the cold street, the surrounding air fell silent.
Then, a low murmur of confusion rippled through the onlookers on the street.
People exchanged bewildered glances, full of questions.
"What just happened?"
"Was she cursed? Can she be cured?"
These queries spread among the crowd, each person trying to make sense of the abrupt transformation they had just witnessed.
Meanwhile, the execution squad, poised to intervene and deal with the crazed, cursed demoness, found themselves hesitating.
Their weapons were still half-raised, and they communicated with silent glances, their eyes finally settling on Executioner Sergeant Nigel, awaiting his decision.
In that moment, the entire street was enveloped in an odd silence, everyone waiting for instructions or an explanation.
Sergeant Nigel, an executioner, stood in the chilly wind that blew down the long street. His gaze shifted from Lisancey, who lay on the ground, to the gathered crowd, and finally to Lanchi and Talia. His expression was complex and inscrutable.
Within his heart, hesitation and conflict pulled him in two directions like opposing tides.
On one hand, as an officer serving under a Duke of the Senate, he had a responsibility to protect the people and maintain order. But on the other hand, the sudden change in Lisancey's behavior made it difficult for him to assess her true state—had she genuinely returned to her senses, or was this just a brief respite from her crazed condition?
Sergeant Nigel's inner turmoil was not without reason.
Women and children could afford to make mistakes, but he could not.
The curse of the Grand Wizard Palroni—
As far as they knew, only the caster could lift it.
And the Senate had been working tirelessly to track down the caster and uncover key leads related to the recent demon incidents.
Nigel's intuition and logic told him that these two before him were unlikely to be the caster.
If it became known that they could lift the curse, they might find themselves entangled in even greater trouble.
Although, in Nigel's eyes, these two foreigners harbored no ill will or prejudice towards demons.
However, others who had not witnessed this disturbance firsthand might not share his opinion.
Sergeant Nigel's gaze rested on Lanchi.
This young man who had appeared out of nowhere was both an unknown variable and a potential ray of hope in solving the case of Grand Wizard Palroni's curse.
Nigel sought answers in Lanchi's expression and demeanor.
Yet, faced with Lanchi's inscrutable countenance, the executioner's heart was filled with uncertainty.
"Am I going to have to take you in, Sergeant?"
After a long wait, Lanchi, his eyes fixed on the executioner, asked tentatively.
He really did not want to end up in jail.
When there was a chance for negotiation, he preferred to resolve issues through communication rather than impulsive action, unlike Talia, who tended to act first and ask questions later.
At least, for now, this sergeant seemed willing to engage in conversation.
"I have no authority to arrest the two of you. You're free to go. I'll take care of things here," Nigel replied, his sharp gaze fixed on Lanchi.
Lanchi breathed a sigh of relief.
"Rest assured, I won't harm her," Nigel added, glancing at the unconscious Lisancey on the ground. "She's an important witness, but I can't guarantee how the Senate will rule on this incident."
If he brought these two back, he wasn't sure how the other executioners would judge the situation. It might even put the pair in more danger.
The most crucial thing right now was to make a swift decision to minimize the fallout from this disturbance.
After all, the executioners weren't exactly a shining example of upright law enforcement.
"I trust you," Lanchi said with a nod.
This sergeant seemed like a man of integrity.
And Talia had confirmed that he wasn't lying.
Sergeant Nigel flicked his finger, sending a card flying towards Lanchi, who deftly caught it.
"..."
Lanchi examined the card—it was Sergeant Nigel's business card, bearing his name and work address.
It was an invitation to come and find him.
Sergeant Nigel and his squad vanished from the square as if they had never been there, and the unconscious Lisancey was also taken away.
Before long, the street that had become the center of attention due to the unexpected incident from above returned to its usual calm.
"Was it a flash mob performance?"
"Doesn't seem likely. Those looked like real executioners earlier."
"But isn't Grand Wizard Palroni's curse supposed to be irreversible? How could she possibly recover?"
The crowd buzzed with speculation and discussion.
But after sharing a few theories and comments about the sudden event, most people began to disperse.
The commotion caused by the apparent intervention of the sergeant's squad had drawn the attention of the Pariah police.
In the night, Pariah police officers, clad in uniforms and bearing badges, arrived on the scene to investigate and restore order.
Some onlookers laughed, half-convinced, whispering about whether this had all been an elaborate stunt. Although they still had doubts, there was little point in lingering; they could always catch the news tomorrow.
As the pedestrians thinned out, the street soon returned to the quiet of the night.
The night sky above the Flower City of Pariah remained deep and beautiful, the buildings glowing with a warm radiance that illuminated every corner of the city.
After all the turmoil had settled, Lanchi and Talia resumed their journey, heading north along the street.
Their shipped luggage would still arrive at Pariah North Station, and now they had to go and retrieve their belongings from the airship.
The Flower City of Pariah was filled with diverse sounds and colors, and each block they passed seemed to tell a different story.
Even though the incident earlier had added some unexpected twists to their night, Professor Bolao had once said that embracing any unforeseen event as an integral part of their journey could enhance their chemistry.
"Looks like the problem is solved."
Lanchi murmured, relishing his newfound freedom.
Thankfully, the executioners hadn't dealt with them harshly.
There was a strange beauty in how the two of them worked together, like a glitch that somehow managed to function perfectly.
Anyhow, they wouldn't be spending the night in jail.
In Pariah, any incident could become the next day's newspaper headline.
"Simple and straightforward."
Talia commented nonchalantly.
As Lanchi and Talia ventured deeper into the Flower City's night, they were immediately captivated by the city's unique and breathtaking scenery when they reached the main boulevard.
Even at night, the fairy-tale-like fragrance and mist of the flowers enveloped them.
Pariah exuded an air of mystery and allure in the darkness, and each streetlamp seemed to narrate an ancient, romantic tale.
The streets were imbued with the city's distinctive artistic flair and lifestyle, with old-fashioned lamps casting a soft, golden glow on the cobblestone roads, and the lengthy pedestrian streets bearing traces of history.
"Talia, back on the airship, my intention was for you to help me block the executioner's attack and showcase your strength. That way, he would be wary of me and would be more inclined to resolve the issue through negotiation rather than force."
Lanchi explained to Talia as they walked side by side.
Even though it was a bit late for explanations now.
But it was worth reviewing their strategy.
The two of them couldn't afford to make any more mistakes.
And it was crucial for them to figure out how to coordinate and develop better chemistry.
"I thought you had failed in your negotiation and were ready to fight it out."
Talia glanced at him, her head tilted to the side.
She only now realized how intricately Lanchi's mind worked.
"I..."
Lanchi faltered.
"By the way, who's Sigrid?"
Talia suddenly asked, interrupting his train of thought.
She had picked up on his thoughts earlier.
He felt that his previous partners, Hubertian and Sigrid, had both been exceptionally well-attuned teammates.
She knew Hubertian, and they did have great chemistry.
But she hadn't heard of Sigrid.
"A well-liked, older woman."
Lanchi replied seriously.
"..."
Talia didn't know why, but she felt there was some hidden meaning in Lanchi's words.
Yet, she couldn't pinpoint what it was.
"So, are there also unpopular types?"
She inquired.
"You guess."
Lanchi responded with a brief, playful smile.
Talia immediately pounced on Lanchi.
Damn it, she'd figure it out later!
Lanchi didn't even have time to react.
"This is the fourth time you've pinned me to the ground!"
Lanchi protested indignantly.
And it was the fastest she'd ever done it.
This was so humiliating!
"Meow..."
Cat Boss jumped to the side and looked at Lanchi.
Arrested again, Master Lan.
If Talia kept this up, she'd soon achieve the "Seven Captures of Lanchi" achievement.
"What good does it do you to remember that?"
Talia's eyes glinted with amusement as she bent down, her voice a soft whisper in his ear,
"Think you can fight back? Are you up to it?"
The more Lanchi struggled, the more Talia found this side of him entertaining, and she couldn't help but exhale softly by his ear, mocking him.
Due to the previous commotion, the Pariah police department had dispatched local officers to the scene.
As they passed by, the officers noticed them.
Talia immediately released Lanchi.
The two of them stood straight, feeling a bit awkward in front of the officers.
The officers were probably there to question eyewitnesses about the details of the earlier disturbance.
"Are you two a couple?"
One of the officers asked.
"How could that be?"
Both Lanchi and Talia immediately denied it.
"Then, what were you two doing earlier if not flirting?"
The officer raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised.
"Of course not!"
They both shouted in unison.
The officer chuckled at their reaction.
"Do you two know that Pariah is a city of civility? I haven't seen a couple brawling in public for many years. Come with us, please."
Before they knew it, a pair of matching rose-gold handcuffs were snapped onto their wrists.
...
"Dear Hubertian,
I was arrested as soon as I arrived in the Flower City.
But I swear, I had no intention of causing trouble.
Whenever I think of how stories end, I'm reminded of their beginnings.
On the day I was arrested, I never imagined that this farcical drama was just beginning.
