Chapter 661: A Pure Heart
Chapter 661: A Pure Heart
"Life Magic..."
Mavis cautiously mouthed the words, her eyes drifting towards a fawn that trotted up to her. She extended her small hand and gently stroked its neck.
The fawn closed its eyes in contentment and nuzzled affectionately against her, its tongue flicking out to lick her neck.
"Yuck, that tickles!" Mavis giggled, unable to suppress a playful dodge.
Standing nearby, Feng Ye watched this exchange with a soft smile, a faint golden glint flickering in his eyes as he employed his future-seeing ability to glimpse into Mavis' future.
Countless scenes unfolded before him, each one branching out like a tree diagram, where every segment of time gave rise to multiple possibilities, and each of those possibilities further splintered into more. Feng Ye could discern all these potential futures, but the farther he looked, the more time it took.
One month...
Two months...
A year...
Two years...
As Feng Ye's gaze penetrated deeper into the distant future that unfurled from Mavis, he found himself transfixed. But, noticing his unwavering stare, Mavis couldn't help but ask in a soft voice, "Umm, what are you looking at?"
Since Feng Ye was clearly a mage, she addressed him with respectful language, though she tended to use such respectful tones with everyone.
At that moment, Feng Ye had seen about three years into Mavis' future, but he hadn't glimpsed anything related to the 'First Magic'. After all, she was only six years old at present.
The future beyond that grew increasingly complex, and continuing to peer further would have taken an exponentially longer time. Hearing Mavis' question, Feng Ye withdrew his gaze and offered a casual smile. "Just taking a little peek into your future."
"Eh?"
Mavis blinked in surprise, her eyes shining with curiosity. "Is it... a predictive type of magic? I've read about it in books."
"You could say that," Feng Ye replied calmly.
Mavis' mouth hung open, and after a brief hesitation, she asked shyly, her cheeks tinged with a cute blush, "Umm, will I be able to become a mage in the future?"
Feng Ye's smile widened. "Of course."
His assurance ignited a brilliant light in Mavis' large eyes, and a charming flush of excitement and happiness suffused her cheeks. She bowed her head respectfully towards Feng Ye and said, "Thank you!"
"You're welcome," Feng Ye replied, his expression serene as he regarded Mavis. "I merely told you what will happen. You seem to have a strong desire to learn magic?"
"Yes," Mavis nodded vigorously.
She had two dreams—to learn magic and to find fairies. Since she didn't know where the fairies were, she figured that learning magic would help her in her search. Such were the thoughts of a six-year-old girl.
Observing Mavis' eagerness, Feng Ye pondered briefly before smiling and saying, "If you yearn so much to learn magic, I can teach you some."
"Eh?!" Mavis' eyes, sparkling like jewels, widened in surprise. "Really? But I'm only six years old..."
"Learning magic has nothing to do with age," Feng Ye explained amiably. "And even if you don't learn it, your own unique magic will awaken soon anyway."
Feng Ye had foreseen a portion of the future, and in every variation, Mavis would awaken her magical power in a few days, gaining her own distinct Illusion Magic.
To awaken magic at the age of six was undeniable proof of Mavis' extraordinary talent in this field. Very few people on this continent could boast such an achievement.
If not for the tragic fate that awaited her, and if she had been allowed to continue her exploration of magic as she grew up, she would have undoubtedly become a powerhouse akin to Arcilea, second only to Jellal and the Dragon King on this continent.
"Oh!" Joy flooded Mavis as she realized that her magic was about to awaken, but then her expression fell as she remembered something. "I'm sorry, I might not be able to learn magic..."
"Why?"
"Because I still have to clean the guild. If I leave it unattended to learn magic, Guild Master Makarov will get angry..." Mavis looked down, her voice tinged with disappointment. But then she straightened and offered Feng Ye a cheerful smile. "You're a kind person. Thank you for your offer."
Feng Ye: "...?!"
He watched as Mavis resumed sweeping the fallen leaves and dust, a bemused expression on his face as he rubbed his nose. It took him a few seconds to process what had just happened.
Had he just been friend-zoned?
Throughout his journey from the Naruto world, this was probably the first time he'd received such a response. Feng Ye found the situation amusing, and he couldn't help but burst into laughter.
"It seems your guild master is quite strict," he remarked.
"Yes, he is," Mavis agreed, pausing in her work to give him a doe-eyed look. "There's a lot of work to do every day, and if I slack off, I'll get scolded... But Guild Master is a good person."
Seeing Mavis' innocent and pure smile, Feng Ye returned her smile, and a sense of emotion stirred within him.
Of all the worlds he had experienced, from Naruto to One Piece, One-Punch Man, and Bleach, none could compare to the beauty of the hearts found in Fairy Tail.
No matter how difficult life got, the people here always faced it with a smile, always focusing on the positive. Their hearts remained sunny and pure, and this six-year-old girl, dirty as she was, had a more beautiful soul than anyone he had ever met.
Even Feng Ye couldn't match her purity.
With his current level of power, he could create and destroy time, space, souls, and matter... Yet, the one thing he couldn't alter was his own heart.
If he possessed a heart as pure as Mavis', he wouldn't be swayed by changes in power, and time would leave no marks on him.
Silently, Feng Ye vanished from in front of Mavis.
Mavis, after cleaning up some dust with her head down, lifted her small head and wiped the sweat from her brow. When she looked toward the forest, she found that Feng Ye was no longer there.
A hint of disappointment arose in her heart because she truly wanted to learn magic. But then she reminded herself that meeting a kind mage like Feng Ye and witnessing his Life Magic was already incredibly lucky, and she should be happy about it.
With these thoughts, the young girl exhaled and once again wore a smile.
Just then—
"Mavis."
Guild Master Jose's voice called out from behind her.
Mavis's body stiffened at the sound, and she trembled slightly before turning around to face the direction of the voice. "Yes... Guild Master Jose."
As she responded, she paused, noticing that Jose wasn't alone. The mage she had seen in the forest was standing beside him.
Jose, in a rare display, offered her a forced smile. "Mavis, erm, your parents' debt to me has been transferred to this gentleman here."
"Eh?"
Mavis was taken aback.
Feng Ye turned to her and smiled amicably. "I just had a chat with your guild master about you, and he was very moved. He has decided to waive your debt."
"Yes, yes," Jose nodded repeatedly, looking deeply touched.
Mavis stared at the scene before her, her eyes wide and doe-like. The tuft of light golden hair on her head quivered as she asked in a soft voice, "So, does that mean... you've bought me, sir?"
Feng Ye smiled faintly. "Don't you want to learn magic?"
Mavis nodded.
Feng Ye continued smiling and asked, "So, what should you call me now?"
Mavis' large eyes sparkled with intelligence, and despite her young age of six, she understood the implication. She took a breath to steady her emotions and bowed to Feng Ye, her manner exceedingly well-behaved as she said, "...Teacher."
Feng Ye smiled at Mavis' response and then turned away, walking toward the distance. "Let's go, Mavis."
"Yes!"
Mavis' voice was now much brighter.
After responding energetically, she gripped the broom in her hand and looked at Jose, who stood beside her. She bowed deeply to him.
"Thank you for taking care of me during this time, Guild Master."
"Ah, ah... Don't mention it. I've been too hard on you, so don't hold it against me, Mavis..."
Jose's gaze shifted away, and he shrunk back slightly as he spoke, stealing glances in the direction Feng Ye had left.
Mavis blinked at Jose's behavior and smiled sweetly. She had already guessed what was going on.
"I won't, Guild Master," she assured him.
If Jose had merely softened his attitude, Mavis would have only inferred that Feng Ye had repaid her debt. But his current attitude went beyond that; he even seemed a little afraid of her. Clearly, there was more to it than just the debt.
From this, Mavis deduced that Feng Ye must be an extremely high-ranking mage, one whom even the guild master of a mage guild feared!
"Well, erm..."
Jose mumbled incoherently.
Mavis' gem-like eyes curved into a crescent shape as she smiled adorably. She tossed the broom in her hand aside and quickly ran after Feng Ye.
