Chapter 66: She Got What She Deserved!
Chapter 66: She Got What She Deserved!
Jiang Xia was jolted awake. She sat up groggily, dazed for a moment, and looked back. "Did I hear someone calling me?"
"No, you must have been mistaken," Zhou Chenglei squeezed her hand. "Go back to sleep for a bit. We're not there yet."
Wen Wan shouted loudly, "Big Brother Zhou, Sister Jiang Xia seems to be asleep. Be careful, she might fall out of the car!"
Zhou Chenglei's face darkened!
Jiang Xia instinctively leaned forward to look ahead and saw Wen Wan sticking her head out of the car, waving at Zhou Chenglei.
Jiang Xia's first thought was that she was courting disaster!
Sure enough, the road was narrow, and a car was approaching from the bend ahead. As the cars passed each other, Wen Wan's car edged closer to the side of the road.
Then, Jiang Xia saw Wen Wan collide with a tree branch!
Jiang Xia: "..."
It looked painful!
She really was asking for it!
Jiang Xia didn't know if her face was scratched or if her eyes were hurt.
Inside the car,
Someone warned Wen Wan about the branches ahead, telling her to sit back.
But it was too late!
Wen Wan turned her head instinctively, and before she could react, a green blur came at her face!
She felt the leaves and twigs of the branch slap her face harshly!
Her head buzzed, and then someone pulled her back into the car.
The car driver was furious. "Hey, do you have a brain? Sticking your head out of the car? Do you want to die? Don't you know it's dangerous?"
Wen Wan's head was throbbing, and her face felt like it was on fire from the branch slap.
The car was moving at a speed, and the branch was quite thick. The impact was almost like someone had whipped her with a branch.
In short, she was in a lot of pain!
Wen Wan felt her forehead was scratched and urgently asked the person next to her, "Is my face scratched?"
She was afraid of disfigurement.
Wen Wan knew she was beautiful and cared a lot about her appearance.
The old woman next to Wen Wan snapped, "Yes, it's scratched!"
She got what she deserved!
If not for the fear that she might be pulled out by the branch and die, the old woman wouldn't have bothered to pull her back!
Wen Wan had never met such a petty person. In the car, with many people, she was sitting between two grandsons, taking up a bit more space. When the grandchildren accidentally touched her, she would scowl and tell them to keep their distance, not to cross her space.
Wen Wan frowned when she heard this.
Someone couldn't help but say, "It's just a scratch, what's the big deal? If not for the old lady pulling you back, you would have been thrown out of the car! Next time, don't stick your head out. Lucky it was a branch. If it had been a rock, your head would have been gone!"
The car driver continued to scold her.
Wen Wan was worried. If her face was scratched and left a scar, wouldn't she look ugly?
She wasn't as beautiful as Jiang Xia to begin with.
Annoyed, she retorted, "You weren't paying attention to the road conditions and didn't remind me earlier? As a driver, you're also responsible for my injury!"
The whole car erupted into a heated argument in support of the driver against Wen Wan.
In the end, everyone made her get out of the car!
Two cars passed by, kicking up a cloud of dust. Jiang Xia quickly buried her face in Zhou Chenglei's back, closed her eyes, and murmured, "There's so much dust!"
Zhou Chenglei's eyes crinkled with a smile. The road ahead was full of dust from passing cars. He stopped the car, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and asked, "Do you want some water?"
He was very thirsty, and his voice was hoarse.
"Wait a moment, there's too much dust," Jiang Xia noticed that Zhou Chenglei's shirt was soaked with sweat, including the part where her face was pressed against his back, and her hand, and his hand.
Their arms were touching, and both were covered in sweat. Jiang Xia's sleeve was damp.
She was also drenched in sweat, even with her full sun protection gear.
When the dust settled, Jiang Xia wanted to jump out of the car.
Zhou Chenglei quickly turned and gently held her arm, reminding her, "Don't jump, your feet might be numb."
Jiang Xia remembered and didn't jump. She stretched her legs and tiptoed to the ground.
Zhou Chenglei reached out and wrapped his arm around her waist to prevent her from falling.
"I'm not numb," Jiang Xia replied.
"Okay." Once Jiang Xia was steady, he let her go, picked up the water bottle, unscrewed it, and handed it to her. "You drink first."
Jiang Xia took the water bottle, noticing it was still full. He hadn’t taken a single sip on the journey.
After riding a bike for so long and breaking a sweat, not drinking water was just asking for heatstroke!
"You drink first," Jiang Xia said, passing it to him.
Zhou Chenglei casually wiped the sweat from his forehead and face with the back of his hand. "You drink first, I’m not thirsty."
Jiang Xia rolled her eyes and shoved the bottle to his lips. "Drink it now!"
This time, Zhou Chenglei didn’t refuse. He took the bottle and drank directly from the spout, a smile playing on his lips.
Jiang Xia watched his throat muscles move sensually and quickly looked away, adjusting the straw hat on her head. She glanced around, surprised that she had fallen asleep and slept so soundly.
They had already covered half the journey! Normally, sleeping on a bike would be restless, and even a slight jolt would wake her up. Yet, she had slept so peacefully. Was it because his back was broad and reliable, and he had held her hand tightly the whole time?
Zhou Chenglei didn’t drink much, knowing they only had one bottle of water left and still had a long way to go. After a few sips, he handed it back to Jiang Xia. "I’ve had enough."
Jiang Xia took the bottle and noticed he hadn’t drunk much. "Drink a bit more."
"It’s enough. You drink. I’m used to it." He had gone without water for two days and two nights during missions before.
Jiang Xia couldn’t argue with him and started drinking from the bottle.
Zhou Chenglei watched her tilt her head back, her long, graceful neck exposed, her hands holding the bottle, slender and radiant, almost glowing. Even her fingertips were beautiful. He couldn’t help but swallow, his throat moving, and he looked away, feeling even more parched.
After a few sips, Jiang Xia handed the bottle back to him. "I’m done. Drink a bit more."
Zhou Chenglei took another sip and then screwed the cap back on.
Jiang Xia noticed the sweat on his forehead and neck, some of it dripping into his eyes and some running down his cheeks into his shirt collar. She raised her hand and used her sleeve to wipe the sweat away.
Her sleeve was clean, washed every day, carrying her scent and a faint fragrance of soap, which was very pleasant.
Zhou Chenglei put down the water bottle and wrapped his long arm around her waist, his eyes and smile full of warmth, letting her wipe the sweat from his face.
After finishing, Jiang Xia met his gentle gaze, her heart skipping a beat. She tried to stay calm and sat back on the bike, hugging his waist. "Let’s go!"
Zhou Chenglei smiled, holding her hand and intertwining their fingers. "Okay."
He pedaled, and the bike started moving.
Soon, Zhou Chenglei and Jiang Xia passed by Wen Wan.
Wen Wan’s face was injured, and she had been crying, making her look terrible. She didn’t want Zhou Chenglei to see her or for Jiang Xia to mock her, so she didn’t greet them.
Jiang Xia asked, "Why did she get off the bike?"
Zhou Chenglei didn’t recognize Wen Wan’s back, as he had never really looked closely. "Who?"
He even turned his head to look back.
"It’s Wen Wan!" Jiang Xia wanted to see her face, but she was looking down, her straw hat blocking her view.
"I don’t know," Zhou Chenglei replied, uninterested. He feared Wen Wan might come over to say hello and sped up.
She was always so polite.
By the time the sky was filled with the vibrant hues of the evening sunset, Zhou Chenglei and Jiang Xia had returned to the village.
At the village entrance, they met a vendor riding away on a bike after selling ice pops. Jiang Xia, feeling very hot, wanted an ice pop.
Zhou Chenglei called out to the vendor and bought three ice pops, one for Jiang Xia, one for Zhou Zhou, and one for Zhou’s mother.
At the gate of the courtyard, just as Jiang Xia was about to jump off the bike, Zhou Chenglei turned and held her arm. "Take it slow, don’t jump."
He tilted the bike slightly to make it easier for her to dismount.
Jiang Xia bit into the ice pop and used her free hand to hold his arm, even pinching it a little. It was so solid!
Zhou Chenglei glanced at her, a smile in his eyes. He got off the bike, propped it up, and squatted down to rub her legs. "Are your feet numb?"
Zhou Paiwei, carrying a bucket of fish, was just returning from the dock. He looked up at the sky, speechless.
What a show!
