Chapter 66: Sarutobi's Astonished Squad
Chapter 66: Sarutobi's Astonished Squad
Konoha.
In an open area.
"Obito, you're late again."
Kakashi stood on a stone stump, his arms folded in front of him, gazing expressionlessly at the hurriedly approaching Uchiha Obito, who wore a protective goggle over his eyes.
Obito Uchiha rushed over, but as a mature ninja, he wasn't out of breath. He looked at Kakashi and said, "I met an old lady on the way..."
"That's your excuse every time."
Kakashi looked at Obito with a 'you've got to be kidding me' expression and sighed, "Can you come up with a slightly more convincing excuse next time?"
"What do you mean by a convincing excuse?!"
Obito glared at Kakashi indignantly. "I really did meet someone..."
Just as Obito and Kakashi were about to get into an argument, Rin, standing beside them, tried to smooth things over. "Alright, alright, you two, stop bickering. I believe you, Obito. And besides, Sensei Sarutobi is late too."
"He must have encountered something along the way."
Hearing Rin's words, Kakashi also found it strange. He scanned the surroundings but had never known Sarutobi to be late.
Just as Kakashi finished speaking, a figure appeared silently behind him. It was Sarutobi, wearing the Konoha forehead protector and his signature yellow spiky hair.
"Sorry, I'm late. I encountered something on my way here."
"It's fine, I just got here myself..."
Obito scratched the back of his head, feeling a bit embarrassed. Kakashi, standing next to him, rolled his eyes, clearly not buying his excuse.
Rin turned to Sarutobi and asked, "So, what's our mission for today, Sensei?"
"There's no mission today."
Sarutobi looked at Kakashi and Obito, lowering his voice. "The Sand Village has officially declared war on us, so our original mission plans are terminated. Tomorrow, you will accompany me to the border to face the ninja from the Sand Village."
Hearing Sarutobi's words, Obito's eyes widened in surprise, but then he looked excited. "We're going to the battlefield too?! Great! My time to shine has finally come!!"
"With your track record of being late, the battle will probably be over by the time you get there."
Kakashi glanced at Obito.
Obito's expression froze, and he glared at Kakashi angrily. "You jerk, Kakashi! You and your brother are both awful!"
Ever since he joined this squad, Obito felt like he was constantly being mocked and looked down upon by Kakashi. In comparison, he felt Feng Ye was not so bad, except for the fact that he was extremely popular with the girls in class, which Obito resented.
"Obito."
Sarutobi ignored Kakashi's jibe and addressed Obito seriously. "This time on the front lines, no matter what happens, you must obey orders and never act on your own!"
Kakashi was efficient when it came to executing orders, and Rin was usually obedient, so Sarutobi's main concern was Obito. He had to make sure Obito understood the seriousness of the situation because this time, they weren't going on a regular mission; they were going to war!
"...I, I understand, Sensei Sarutobi."
Hearing Sarutobi's stern warning, Obito's enthusiasm dampened.
Rin took a breath, still processing the news Sarutobi had brought. "So, we're going to the battlefield too. I wonder how Feng Ye is doing."
"Feng Ye..."
Sarutobi's expression turned pensive at the mention of Feng Ye. "Well..."
Noticing Sarutobi's reaction, Kakashi's face also turned solemn. He couldn't help but ask, "Sensei, what about my brother?"
Obito also looked up, his eyes filled with a rare seriousness.
"What's going on?"
He despised Feng Ye, but he didn't want to hear any bad news about him. He wanted to surpass Feng Ye and Kakashi with his own strength and achievements, eventually becoming the Hokage of Konoha, not because something unfortunate had happened to Feng Ye.
"Huh?"
Rin furrowed her brows, confusion clouding her features as she struggled to comprehend the statement.
Kakashi, on the other hand, stiffened slightly, a glimmer of realization flickering in his eyes, though he found it somewhat unbelievable. "What exactly did he do over there?" he demanded.
"I don't know the specifics," Minato admitted, shaking his head. "But what I can tell you is that, not long ago, during a battle, he slew over thirty of Iwa's elite ninjas, including a significant number of jonin."
The weight of these words hung heavy in the air, and the group fell silent.
Even Kakashi, who had some inkling of Feng Ye's capabilities, couldn't help but wear a look of shock. He had never imagined that Feng Ye would accomplish something so astonishing on the battlefield! Rin, too, was stupefied.
'He killed over thirty of Iwa's elite ninjas, including many jonin...' The statement echoed in her mind, almost defying belief.
Konoha's current roster of ninjas numbered over twenty thousand. While there were over ten thousand genin and more than six to seven thousand chunin, the number of jonin didn't exceed three hundred!
Each jonin was an exceptional individual within their village, capable of leading a squad of ninjas and serving as the true backbone of their community.
Yet, Feng Ye had slain multiple jonin in a single battle.
It was inconceivable!
Just how powerful had Feng Ye become?!
"No, that can't be possible!"
"Sensei, are you sure you didn't mishear...?"
Obito's expression mirrored Rin's, his eyes wide with disbelief. This news was almost too fantastical to accept; it sounded like a fairy tale.
Minato shook his head, his expression solemn. "It's confirmed intelligence. That child has truly inherited White Fang's talents... No, this goes beyond mere talent; he must have also put in an amount of effort that surpasses the imagination of ordinary people."
"Yes," Kakashi breathed, his eyes distant as he recalled Feng Ye's relentless training regimen.
As Feng Ye's brother, he was all too aware of the extent of Feng Ye's dedication to his craft. Every night, Feng Ye would train until the wee hours of the morning, sacrificing even his sleep.
Such a frenzied training pace was something Obito knew he could never match. He had tried to emulate Feng Ye's routine once, but after two days, his energy and focus had plummeted, and he knew he couldn't sustain it.
Obito remembered a phrase Feng Ye had once uttered: "To attain a power far beyond that of others, one must exert an effort far beyond what others are willing to give. Every ounce of strength is earned through relentless training and hard work."
Even now, Obito struggled to reconcile the fact that Feng Ye had quietly risen to such heights that he could now take on jonin.
He, Obito, had not yet mastered the Chidori.
His Cell Activation technique was still a recent acquisition.
By his own estimation, he was still a notch below the level of a jonin.
"To be left so far behind..."
Kakashi shook his head in dismay, wondering how he could ever hope to catch up.
Upon hearing confirmation from Minato, Obito's expression turned pensive. At this point, he was still a genin, while Feng Ye had already racked up an impressive body count of jonin.
The gap between them had widened to such an extent that it felt almost surreal. Just a few months ago, they had been classmates, and now...
Cheating! That had to be it!
But Obito was, after all, a member of the Uchiha clan. After a moment of dazed shock, he shook himself out of his stupor, drew a deep breath, and his eyes once again gleamed with determination. He clenched his fists, his confidence restored.
"I will surpass that guy!"
He was of the Uchiha clan, and once he unlocked the Sharingan, his power would surge exponentially.
Let Feng Ye have his moment in the sun.
He, Obito, would catch up and become the Hokage of Konoha!
