Chapter 656: A Letter from Sigrid
Chapter 656: A Letter from Sigrid
Several days later.
The weather in Icerite had been dreary and overcast lately, with frequent rumblings of thunder.
Along with a cold snap, the hottest days of summer had passed, and now the temperatures would gradually cool down until autumn arrived.
And today was the day Lanchi was set to depart for the Kingdom of Bosen.
As he had an evening train ticket, Lanchi had no classes or extra work during the day; he only needed to pack his luggage.
"It feels like I just returned from a long journey, and now I'm off again," Lanchi muttered to himself as he stood in front of his wardrobe in his room, a furrowed brow.
Now that he thought about it, his last trip had been a diplomatic mission to the Shadow World as an envoy of the Poke Land Empire. No wonder he felt like he had been constantly on the move.
Lanchi soon shook off his surprise.
With this trip to the Kingdom of Bosen, he was one step closer to retirement.
If he were to write a memoir of his life, he would be at the second-to-last volume now.
As he was organizing his suitcase, a crisp tapping sound rang out on the windowpane, joining the pitter-patter of rain.
"Meow, Lanchi, you've got mail."
A small black cat wearing a raincoat opened Lanchi's bedroom window and used telekinetic magic to float a letter onto Lanchi's desk.
"Thank you, Mr. Cat," Lanchi said, putting down the clothes in his hands and walking to the window to take the letter.
The cat seemed to have magically protected the envelope from the rain, keeping it completely dry.
"You're welcome, meow," Mr. Cat replied, taking off his cat-shaped raincoat, folding it neatly, and placing it on the ground.
A letter had been delivered to Mr. Cat's restaurant, addressed to Lanchi and kept at the counter by Pranai. Mr. Cat had stopped by the restaurant before setting out today and had brought the letter along.
"Perfect timing," Lanchi said, glancing at the darkening sky outside. By his calculations, if the sea mail courier had been punctual, the reply should have arrived around this time.
He was glad the letter had come before his departure.
Lanchi walked to one side of the room and turned on the floor lamp before slowly sitting down at his desk.
On this summer day, where one couldn't tell morning from afternoon due to the relentless rain, the lamplight brought a sense of clarity to the room.
Lanchi's fingertips brushed the sealed letter; the envelope felt slightly rough, its texture suggesting it had endured the sea breeze.
He took a small, delicate letter opener from his desk drawer and inserted the blade into the flap of the envelope, carefully slicing along the edge as if sketching an outline on a canvas. With utmost care, he opened the envelope.
The letter inside seemed like a precious treasure, awaiting his discovery.
Lanchi gently pulled out the thin, fragile paper, which had an antique feel to it, as if it had been fumigated with incense in the olden days. It had been enchanted so that it wouldn't be easily damaged.
A slight smile played on his lips as he began to read.
"To Mr. Wilfred,
First of all, I am delighted to have received your letter.
The talent you recruited for me is excellent. Just as the Protoss Empire's Bathian branch was fretting over staffing issues, you sent me a group of well-trained elite Grand Priests. I must say, we are truly kindred spirits.
It's strange, but I've been dreaming about you lately.
Thinking about you day and night might be a silly obsession.
But I want to say, it's wonderful to have met a true confidant.
I wonder if you still reminisce about those dozens of days we spent together in the vast Protoss snow-capped mountains?
No matter how cold it got, I never felt afraid.
Not even in my dreams.
Given a little time, you turn winter into a vibrant spring, filling my world with warm sunshine.
"Meow, it's from Sigrid," Mr. Cat chimed in, curling up nearby and peering at the letter in Lanchi's hand. Even without seeing the signature, he knew who the writer was.
Mr. Cat had been curious as to who would be sending Lanchi letters.
"Now that I think about it, Lanchi did intercept a group of Grand Priests from the Destruction Branch back in the South Mantina Domain."
Back then, Lanchi had actually used them as free messengers, asking them to deliver a letter to Sigrid.
How extravagant.
"This handwriting is definitely hers."
Lanchi rubbed Mr. Cat's head, his eyes never leaving the letter.
"And now, some serious matters."
"Our partner, the leader of the Berenhald family, Duchess Chloris, has investigated Duke Morotian's relics and the northern border. It appears that there are indeed signs of the Demon Tribe's presence, and this group of demons seem to be completely different from Pranai and his ilk. They have now withdrawn from the Protoss Empire."
"Demons?"
Mr. Cat looked up at Lanchi.
"At the time... Duchess Chloris asked me, as the principal of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, to investigate the north because of the panic caused by the influx of mysterious demons into the northern countries. In the end, the trail led to Duke Morotian and the Extinction Bishop Askesang."
Lanchi hesitated as he recalled the events.
Unbeknownst to them, their investigation in the northern regions of the Protoss Empire had actually uncovered signs of the Demon Tribe's presence.
"Even the Ice Witch Almyce is certain that she had never heard of such demons a hundred years ago, and their culture is completely different from what she knows of the Demon Tribe."
"What troubles Archmage Isis is the possibility that among this unknown group of demons, there may be an existence more powerful than Duke Morotian, one whom even I may not be able to defeat with certainty."
"We still have no clues as to their origins and intentions."
"However, one thing we can be certain of is that the more remnants of the Demon Tribe there are in a place, the easier it is for them to hide their traces. The Protoss Empire and the Kingdom of Aethertine are natural infiltration grounds for them."
Lanchi turned to the next page.
"By the time you receive this letter, I might have already finished dealing with the matters on the Protoss Empire's side."
"Roughly? Will I arrive in the Kingdom of Horton in another two or three months?"
"After all, the sea route between the two continents is so long, and it will be a lengthy journey to travel from the northern regions of the Southern Continent, passing through various countries to reach the eastern regions and find the Kingdom of Horton."
"If you've finished your work and still have the energy, could you please give me a tour of the royal capital, Icerite?"
"Regardless, I sincerely wish you all the best."
"Yours sincerely."
"Meow, this sounds like an order." Mr. Cat said to Lanchi.
Although Sigrid's words were polite, she clearly wasn't giving Lanchi the option to refuse.
"Indeed, Bishop doesn't like it when others go against her wishes." Lanchi nodded.
"Wait a moment."
Sensing that there was more to the letter, he flipped to the back of the folded page.
"I miss you."
"Remember to work hard on your cultivation and quickly reach the Sixth-Tier!"
There was even a cute little drawing of Xide at the end.
"Tsk, that old fox sure knows how to turn on the charm." Lanchi shook his head and smiled to himself.
"Old fox, huh? Be careful about your affection points, meow." The little black cat reminded him in Xide's tone.
"I really wish I could finish all my work quickly and start living a leisurely life." Lanchi carefully folded the letter, smoothing out the creases, before placing it back into the envelope and putting it away in the first compartment of his cabinet.
"Meow meow meow, just retire already!" Mr. Cat meowed.
"Rest assured, it won't be long. Most of the latter half of my memoir will be mundane daily stories, and there won't be any main story quests in a collection of daily tales." Lanchi patted the cat and stood up, heading back to his wardrobe to continue packing.
