Chapter 653: Kyle is Taken Away
Chapter 653: Kyle is Taken Away
Upon Kyle's return to the corridor on the eighth floor after his inspection, the Room of Requirement had vanished without a trace, as if nothing had ever happened.
Meanwhile, the others had also finished their patrols on their respective floors, and needless to say, none of them had any success.
Some showed signs of frustration, like Montague and Filch.
"I know they'll be up to something tonight," Filch said eagerly as soon as he arrived on the eighth floor. "Peeves was causing trouble on the first floor, and I heard his shouts."
"Did you catch anyone?" Kyle asked.
"No," Filch said angrily. "By the time I got there, the person was gone, but I found a lot of footprints, probably from over a dozen people."
"But we can't catch them based on footprints, Mr. Filch," Kyle said, glancing at him. "Unless you can take away everyone's shoes and compare them one by one."
Filch's face turned slightly unpleasant, and he huffed without saying a word, turning and heading downstairs.
He still couldn't understand why Umbridge would make him follow a student's orders when he could handle these tasks himself.
"He's so impolite," Kyle shook his head.
On the other hand, Montague was more honest. Although he was also frustrated for not catching anyone, he didn't show it. Instead, he quietly stood at the back, trying to minimize his presence.
"It's alright, everyone. Don't be discouraged," Kyle said, looking at the group. "It's just the first day, and it's normal to have no results. As long as those people haven't given up on breaking the rules, we'll catch them one day."
After encouraging the group, Kyle clapped his hands and said, "Now, everyone, go back and rest. Don't be late for class tomorrow."
Several Slytherins descended the stairs without a word, and Kyle also returned to the Hufflepuff Common Room.
By this time, it was already late. As he pushed open the barrel door, only Cedric and Conna remained in the Common Room, passing the time with Exploding Snap.
"You're finally back," Cedric glanced at the time and smiled. "But speaking of which, you guys have been working hard, staying up so late."
"Who told you to run off early?" Kyle smiled and walked over to sit in the armchair between the two.
"How does it feel?" Conna put down her cards and asked with interest.
"It's...not bad," Kyle replied. "If you're interested, I can convince Umbridge to make you my assistant."
"Never mind," Conna quickly shook her head. "I can't guarantee I won't slip up. It's better if you do it."
"It's fine. The assistant's job is just to follow me, and there won't be any problems," Kyle said.
Conna was tempted, mainly because everyone else had something to do, and she wanted to help too.
"And it's a rare opportunity," Kyle continued. "You can experience what it's like to outwit your enemies, just like the members of the Order of the Phoenix have been doing."
"It should be the Head of the Auror Office," Cedric teased. "Don't forget you're also leading a group of Slytherins."
"If Montague and the others were Aurors, the Ministry would be in trouble," Kyle shrugged. "Of course, I'd be the same."
Kyle's self-deprecating words made Conna laugh out loud.
The three of them chatted in the Common Room for a while longer until the wee hours of the morning when they finally returned to their dormitories.
...
The next day, to make the act seem more convincing, Cedric didn't sit next to Kyle at mealtimes as he usually did. Instead, he deliberately sat further away.
Kyle thought it was unnecessary, as everyone, including Umbridge, was focused on Gryffindor, and no one knew he was also a member of Dumbledore's Army. But Cedric enjoyed the role, occasionally lifting his head to glare at Kyle with an intense stare.
His acting skills were not the best, and Kyle had to bite his lip to keep from laughing.
However, in response, the Slytherin students became much friendlier towards him.
As soon as Charms class ended, several Slytherins surrounded Kyle, chatting with him and even inviting him to their homes during the Christmas break.
"Our family holds a ball every Christmas break, and you can't miss it. It's much more exciting than the school ball last year..." said a sixth-year Slytherin. "And many notable figures will be there, including Minister Fudge, who occasionally drops by."
"Really? That's great, I'll definitely go if I have time then." Kyle said, quickening his pace without showing any signs of excitement.
Just as they left the classroom corridor, two people blocked their way to the Great Hall.
"Weasley..." Kyle hadn't finished speaking when a Slytherin stepped forward and said, "What are you up to!"
"It's none of your business. We're not here to see you." Fred glanced at him and then glared at Kyle, "Do you dare to come with us?"
"Of course, why not?" Kyle replied with a smile.
He then signaled for the others to go ahead, and he walked with Conna to another corridor with Fred, which was empty.
As soon as they were out of sight, Fred's expression changed.
"How did you do it?" He tried to contain his excitement and said in a low voice, "Our suspension has been lifted... I, George, and Harry can all continue playing."
"Oh, that's great." Kyle smiled, "Congratulations."
"But how did you do it? You actually made Umbridge change her mind." Fred asked again.
He was too curious.
Umbridge had been here for so long, and he had never heard of anyone getting her to retract a punishment, not once.
Not even when Professor McGonagall went to see her a few days ago, was Professor Trelawney's situation of being kept for in-school detention changed.
"I just wrote a letter to the Malfoy family." Kyle said.
"Is that all?"
This work is organized and uploaded by Li Hua.
"Of course."
Fred was a little skeptical, but before he could ask anything else, George waved from the other end of the corridor, interrupting him.
The next second, they heard a chaotic sound of footsteps.
Someone was coming.
Fred had no choice but to put on a fierce posture again, shouting, "You'll see! Don't let us catch you again!"
After saying this, he and George quickly walked to the other end of the corridor and left before Umbridge arrived.
...
The following week continued in the same manner.
Cedric was fine, but Fred and George could only secretly chat with Kyle or go to the Room of Requirement after curfew.
At first, they found it interesting, but it became a little boring as time passed.
"Let's wait a little longer... Maybe during the Christmas break, those Slytherins will go home." Fred said after another DA gathering.
As usual, they went to send off the other students, with Kyle walking ahead to ensure no one suddenly appeared.
Everything went smoothly until midnight.
Kyle was about to return, but Professor McGonagall suddenly approached and came to Kyle in front of everyone.
"Dumbledore wants to see you. Come with me." Then, she took Kyle away without giving him a chance to speak, leaving a group of Slytherins standing there in a fluster.
"Damn, why is the Headmaster getting involved too?" A fifth-year student couldn't help but speak up, "What should we do? Should we go to Professor Umbridge?"
"No, don't move." Montague looked in the direction where Kyle was taken, his eyes shifting, and said with a hint of schadenfreude, "No, we should trust Kyle. He will definitely resolve this trouble."
"But..." The person wanted to say something else.
"So, didn't you hear what I just said?" Montague took two steps forward and looked at him coldly.
Looking at the towering Montague, the person immediately shook his head, "No, I didn't."
"Good." Montague nodded in satisfaction, "And since it's so late, it's better not to disturb Professor Umbridge's rest. Now, let's all go back to our Common Rooms. We can talk about this tomorrow."
Montague's words immediately gained the agreement of some people, who unanimously chose to conceal the matter as if nothing had happened, laughing and talking as they went downstairs.
Malfoy stayed at the back of the group. He glanced at the direction of the Headmaster's office, his expression showing a hint of hesitation.
But in the end, after Pansy and Crabbe's constant urging, he took a deep breath and caught up with the others.
