Chapter 653: Kyle is Taken Away
Chapter 653: Kyle is Taken Away
As Kyle patrolled the eighth floor and returned to the corridor where the Room of Requirement used to be, there was no longer any trace of it on the wall, as if nothing had happened.
At the same time, the others had finished patrolling their respective floors, and needless to say, everyone had come up empty-handed.
Some seemed quite dissatisfied, such as Filch and Madam Pince.
"I know they were up to something tonight," Filch said eagerly as soon as he reached the eighth floor. "I heard Peeves causing trouble on the first floor."
"So did you catch them?" Kyle asked.
"No," Filch said angrily. "By the time I got there, they were gone, but I found a lot of footprints, probably from over a dozen people."
"But we can't catch people just based on footprints, Mr. Filch," Kyle said, glancing at him. "Unless you plan to take everyone's shoes and compare them one by one."
Filch's face turned ugly, and he coldly hmphed without saying a word, turning and walking downstairs.
He still couldn't understand why Umbridge would make him take orders from a student. He could handle these things himself.
"So rude," Kyle shook his head.
Madam Pince, on the other hand, was much more honest. Although she was also annoyed that she hadn't caught anyone, she didn't show it. She quietly stood at the back, trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.
"Well, there's no need to be discouraged, everyone," Kyle said to the group. "It's only the first day. It's normal not to have any results yet. As long as those people haven't given up breaking the rules, we'll catch them one day."
After encouraging the group, Kyle clapped his hands and said, "Now, everyone should get some rest so you don't end up late for class tomorrow."
A few Slytherins headed downstairs without a word, and Kyle also returned to the Hufflepuff common room.
It was very late, and when he pushed open the barrel door, only Cedric and Connor were left in the common room, passing the time with a game of Exploding Snap.
"You're finally back," Cedric said, glancing at the time. "But I have to say, you guys are really working hard, staying out so late."
"Who told you to run off early," Kyle smiled and sat down in the armchair between the two.
"How was it?" Connor asked with interest, putting down her cards.
"Well... it was okay," Kyle said. "If you're interested, I can talk to Umbridge and make you my assistant."
"No thanks," Connor quickly shook her head. "I can't guarantee I won't blow my cover. It's better if you do it yourself."
"It's fine, the assistant just needs to follow me around, there won't be any problems," Kyle said.
Connor was tempted. Mainly, everyone else had something to do, and she wanted to help too.
"And it's a rare opportunity," Kyle continued. "You can experience what it's like to outwit enemies in advance, just like the members of the Order of the Phoenix have been doing."
"You mean the Head of the Auror Office," Cedric teased. "Don't forget you're also commanding a bunch of Slytherins."
"If people like Madam Pince and the Slytherins were Aurors, the Ministry would be finished," Kyle shrugged. "Of course, I'd be just as bad."
Kyle's self-deprecating comment made Connor laugh out loud.
The three of them chatted in the common room for a while longer, until the early hours of the morning, before finally returning to their dormitories.
...
The next day, to make the act more convincing, Cedric didn't sit next to Kyle during mealtimes as he usually did. Instead, he deliberately went to a more distant spot.
Although Kyle felt it was completely unnecessary—including Umbridge, everyone was keeping an eye on Gryffindor, and no one knew he was also a member of Dumbledore's Army—Cedric was enthusiastic about his role, even occasionally lifting his head to glare at Kyle.
His acting skills were truly terrible, and Kyle had to press his lips together to keep from laughing out loud.
However, the Slytherins' attitudes towards him became much friendlier as a result.
As soon as Charms class ended, a few Slytherins surrounded Kyle and struck up a conversation, even inviting him to their homes during the Christmas holidays.
"My family holds a ball every Christmas holiday, and you must come. It's much more exciting than the school ball last year..." said a sixth-year Slytherin. "And a lot of important people will be there, including Minister Fudge from time to time."
"Weasley..." Before Kyle could say anything, a Slytherin stepped forward and asked, "What do you think you're doing?"
"It has nothing to do with you. We're not here for you," Fred snapped, glancing at the Slytherin before turning to Kyle with a fierce look on his face. "Do you dare come with us?"
"Of course, why wouldn't I?" Kyle replied with a smile.
He then signaled for the others to go on ahead as he took Connor with him, following Fred to another corridor that was deserted.
As soon as they were out of sight, Fred's expression changed.
"How did you do it?" he asked, trying to suppress his excitement and lowering his voice. "Our Quidditch ban has been lifted... I, George, and Harry can all continue playing. How did you manage to make that old toad Umbridge change her decision?"
"Oh, that's nice," Kyle said with a smile. "Congratulations."
"But how did you do it? How did you get Umbridge to change her mind?" Fred asked again, his curiosity getting the better of him.
He had never heard of anyone being able to make Umbridge revoke a punishment in all the time she had been here, not once.
Even when Professor McGonagall had gone to speak to her a few days ago, she hadn't been able to change Professor Trelawney's situation.
"I just wrote a letter to the Malfoy family," Kyle said.
"That's it?"
"Of course."
Fred was a bit skeptical, but before he could ask anything else, George waved at them from the other end of the corridor, interrupting their conversation.
The next second, they heard a clatter of hurried footsteps approaching.
Someone was coming.
Fred had no choice but to put on a fierce look once more and said loudly, "You'll see! Don't let us catch you again!"
With that, he and George quickly walked to the other end of the corridor and left before Umbridge could arrive.
...
This went on for the next week.
Cedric was fine, but Fred and George could only sneakily talk to Kyle or visit the Room of Requirement after curfew.
While they found it interesting at first, it soon became a bit boring.
"Let's wait a bit longer... Maybe those Slytherins will go home during the Christmas holidays," Fred said after another DA meeting.
As per usual, they went to send off the other students, with Kyle walking ahead to keep watch for anyone who might appear.
Everything went smoothly until midnight.
Just as Kyle was about to head back, Professor McGonagall suddenly appeared and walked straight up to him in front of everyone.
"Dumbledore wants to see you. Come with me," she said, and without another word, she led Kyle away, leaving a group of startled Slytherins behind.
"Damn, why is the Headmaster getting involved now?" said a fifth-year student. "What should we do? Should we go to Professor Umbridge?"
"No, don't," Montague said, his eyes shifting towards the direction Kyle was taken. "It's just the Headmaster. We should trust Kyle. He'll be able to handle this, I'm sure."
"But..." the student began to say.
"Didn't you hear what I just said?" Montague took two steps forward and looked at him coldly.
Seeing the tall and burly Montague, the student quickly shook his head. "No, I didn't."
"Good." Montague nodded in satisfaction. "And it's already so late. We shouldn't disturb Professor Umbridge at this hour. Let's just head back to the common room for now, and we can discuss this tomorrow."
Montague's suggestion was met with agreement from some of the students, who chose to keep quiet about what had happened and headed back to their dormitories, chatting and laughing as if nothing had occurred.
Malfoy lingered at the back of the group, his eyes flicking towards the direction of the Headmaster's office, a conflicted expression on his face.
However, with Pansy and Crabbe urging him on, he eventually took a deep breath and followed the rest of the group.
