Chapter 650: Lanchi and Talia's Journey to School
Chapter 650: Lanchi and Talia's Journey to School
The sun had already risen high in the distant horizon.
As Cardinal Lanchi and Talia stepped out of the dormitory of the Sage's Court, the melodious sound of bells rang through the air.
Today marked the first Monday since Talia moved into the Ikelite Academy.
"Wasn't it the same when we first came to Ikelite Academy? We heard the bells as soon as we arrived," Talia said as she walked alongside Lanchi, carrying a little black cat. Their path took them towards the Magecraft Institute for their classes.
When they had first arrived together, their relationship had been strained, with Talia merely acting as his bodyguard and teacher.
Back then, she had accompanied Lanchi, who was new to the school, on a tour of the entire Ikelite Academy. They had relied on signs to find their way around until Lanchi completed the registration modification procedure for the entrance exam.
"I think it was around three in the afternoon then. I remember you despised me and were always so cold," Lanchi said thoughtfully, sounding a little aggrieved.
The iconic red-brick belfry on campus rang nine times and then fell silent, signaling the arrival of nine in the morning.
As they walked past the belfry, its majestic presence stood out amidst the vast expanse of meadow, surrounded by lush trees. The morning sunlight filtered through the treetops, casting a dappled pattern of light and shadow on the verdant grass, creating a morning scene of intersecting light and shadow.
"It's not my fault you were always thinking about those damn things. I felt something was off about you even then," Talia retorted with a cold smile.
She never imagined that more than a year later, they would once again be walking together on campus.
"But I remember that back then, you hardly spoke to me at all. You only spoke a few times on the way here from South Ventina," Lanchi recalled.
"I've always been a man of few words. I'm only chatting with you more now because we're slightly more familiar," Talia said, shaking her head in a haughty manner.
"You two haven't stopped chatting lately, meow," Boss Cat chimed in.
Although most of the time, it was bickering.
But as an observer, Boss Cat was certain that they wouldn't have even argued with each other in the past.
"That's not true," both Lanchi and Talia denied to the cat.
Chatting away, they weaved their way through buildings of diverse architectural styles.
They passed by the ancient tower library of the Sage's Court, adorned with bas-reliefs, and also strolled through the Knight's Court arena, exuding a classical ambiance with its pointed arch windows.
Upon closer inspection, these were all paths they had once trodden.
And the more they passed by buildings with large glass windows, the more ill at ease Talia became.
"Make my skirt a little longer," Talia finally said to Lanchi.
As a dignified demon princess, she had never worn such a short skirt, and she always felt a chill on her thighs.
Wearing stockings in summer would be too hot.
"I offered to remake your uniform for you yesterday, but you were worried that suddenly changing Lanfu's habits might expose a flaw. Now that we're out, you're having second thoughts. So, should I alter it or not?" Lanchi spread his hands helplessly, like a much-wronged contractor.
"..." Talia was momentarily lost for words.
"Then which do you think is better, a short skirt or a long skirt? After all, you're the designer and the one who makes the patterns," she asked after a few steps.
Boss Cat, in Talia's arms, looked up at Lanchi.
Here they go again, he thought.
With questions like these, it was best to turn the question back on the asker.
If Lanchi answered short skirt, Talia might reply, "If you so wish to see me in a short skirt, I could reluctantly oblige and continue playing the role of Lanfu."
"I have to ask for your opinion first since you're the one wearing the outfit. I can't just alter it without your input." Lanchi blinked innocently as he spoke.
"I don't mind. Most of the time, I'm just wearing it for you, so you decide." Talia said, her arms folded across her chest.
Now that they were inseparable, whatever she wore would be the first thing that caught Lanchi's eye.
"Er..." Lanchi admitted that Talia's short skirt had an unusual appeal to him, but sometimes it was a struggle to hold back his laughter.
"What are you thinking about?" Talia's gaze locked onto Lanchi, and her desire to kill surged.
"!" Lanchi realized that their heart-minds were now connected, and she could sense his every thought.
"They each have their own characteristics. You look good in a short skirt or even track pants because you have a great foundation." Lanchi paused to appraise her, offering a serious analysis.
"...Don't just stare." Talia instinctively felt a bit uncomfortable and averted her gaze. "...Never mind, anyway, we're leaving in less than a week. After we return to the Kingdom of Horton, I won't pretend to be Lanfu anymore. For now, I'll just make do with this outfit. Changing Lanfu's clothes randomly might upset her." Talia quickened her pace and walked ahead alone.
After a few minutes of walking, the pair passed through a garden and located the red-brick building on the edge of the Magecraft Institute—the old humanities building.
"Our workspace is on the second floor. With your Great Lover Poet ID, you'll have access to the Magecraft Institute Director's Workshop on the second floor," Lanchi explained as he led Talia into the building.
"Mhm." Talia and Lanchi had agreed that they could be honest with Professor Polaau about Lanfu's current situation. Otherwise, it would be extremely challenging for Talia to pretend to be Lanfu in the workshop all day.
They climbed the stairs to the second floor and used their IDs to open the heavily sealed door made of multiple layers of anti-magic steel.
Magecraft Institute Director's Workshop.
The entire massive laboratory resembled a square maze dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the limits of magic. Cold white light emanated from the light sources hanging from the ceiling, illuminating the magical machinery constructed from steel, glass, and exotic metals.
Bookshelves seemed to form the walls, connecting to the dome of the laboratory.
Talia followed Lanchi through the bookcase corridors, past scattered records and ancient magical tomes, until they reached the heart of the laboratory.
Professor Polaau sat at his desk, surrounded by magecraft blueprints and measuring tools, his pale hair occasionally twitching as he focused intently on his work.
"Professor Polaau, we're here," Lanchi greeted him.
"Hmm? Lanchi, Lanfu?" The old professor looked up, removing his silver-framed glasses from the bridge of his nose and placing them on the table. A smile spread across his face as he regarded the pair like beloved grandchildren.
Although he disliked being interrupted while working, he made an exception for his students.
Professor Polaau opened a drawer and tossed two candies onto the far end of the desk.
Whenever Lanchi and his friends visited, he would offer them selected snacks from Ikelite Academy as employee benefits. Each quarter, the school provided all faculty and staff with special gift boxes.
Just then—
"Lanfu, you're a bit different today... No, you're not Lanfu, are you?" Professor Polaau's brow furrowed as he noticed the figure standing next to Lanchi.
