Chapter 65: A Friendly Dormitory Exchange Match
Chapter 65: A Friendly Dormitory Exchange Match
Dormitory Head Kabayama briefly explained the agenda for the welcoming ceremony for the new students of Yellow Dormitory.
In simple terms, it was an internal exchange tournament within the dormitory.
The people in this world often say that dueling is not only about winning or losing but also a way for duelists to connect and understand each other, as it involves a clash of their souls.
Dorm Head Kaba obviously subscribes to this philosophy. He believes that instead of the traditional dry introductions, where names are quickly forgotten, a game of Duel Monsters is a more effective way to help everyone get to know each other faster.
Naturally, the list of new students for the dormitory had already been submitted to the dormitory head beforehand. Thus, Professor Kaba had prepared a duel roster in advance, arranging for the students to interact and face off against each other.
"The tournament will take place during the first two weeks of the new school year. Of course, with so many new students, it's impossible for everyone to participate in a single elimination bracket, nor is it necessary to pursue victory to the bitter end. However, as a special encouragement..."
Dorm Head Kaba smiled mysteriously and waved his hand.
"...for this dormitory exchange, each victory will earn you one extra credit outside of your regular academic studies at the academy!"
The freshmen couldn't help but be intrigued by this incentive.
Everyone knew that credits at the Duel Academy were not just for academic purposes but could also be exchanged for 'Dp points', which could be used for any consumption within the academy's facilities, including meals and shopping.
Of course, this also included purchasing cards.
As expected of the Duel Academy, the first day already involved a card-playing activity.
This meant that winning was now more crucial than ever.
The freshmen were instantly filled with fighting spirit.
Of course, while dueling was important, so was mealtime. It was said that Dorm Head Kaba had personally joined the kitchen staff for the welcoming ceremony, preparing a variety of exquisite dishes.
This included, but was not limited to: curry beef, curry chicken rice, curry fish, and curry tofu.
The freshmen couldn't help but be speechless at the array of curry dishes, sensing the dormitory head's profound and unusual love for curry.
After the satisfying meal, as the banquet was about to conclude, a newcomer in a yellow uniform with thick eyebrows blocked You Xuan's path.
"Fujiki You Xuan?"
You Xuan paused and sized up his counterpart.
"Yamamoto Yuuichi?" You Xuan asked tentatively.
That was the name of the first newcomer he was assigned to duel with, according to the roster announced by the dormitory head.
"That's right."
The young man hooked his lips into a smile.
"I checked the roster, and it looks like you're this year's top student. I ranked fifth, but I didn't perform well on the written exam because I slept in too late the day before.
However, that doesn't matter. When it comes to actual combat, I'm definitely the best."
He raised his arm, drawing attention to the Duel Disk already equipped on his wrist.
"Although the pairings are randomly assigned, I'm quite pleased with this exchange list. After all, we'll eventually have to face each other sooner or later. Why not start with the strongest player right from the get-go? How about a post-meal exercise?"
"Well, alright."
You Xuan patted his clothes and stood up.
It didn't matter when the duel took place, but getting it out of the way early meant one less thing to worry about.
As the evening banquet had just concluded, the freshmen naturally hadn't dispersed yet. Soon, a crowd gathered to witness the impromptu duel.
"Ah? They're dueling already? So soon?"
"Looks like it's a duel between the top-ranked and fifth-ranked students this year. A clash of aces right from the start?"
The students poured out of the dormitory, forming a circle to spectate the match.
"By the way, did you guys watch the first-ranked student's entrance exam?"
"No, I didn't. Why? Was there something special about it?"
"It's not so much that it was special, but he's just... really unique." The student scratched his head, unsure how to describe it. "Well, you'll know what I mean when you see it, I guess."
Mikawa Daichi also stood quietly among the crowd, arms folded, squinting as he observed You Xuan.
Many other students hadn't noticed, but Mikawa had witnessed You Xuan's entrance exam duel. He had taken an interest in the top-ranked student who had ridden on his head during the exam, so he had specifically looked up information about him.
And he was astonished to discover that this person had defeated the legendary Ryuzaki before enrollment!
"A duel with the top-ranked student, huh?" Mikawa said with a smile, his arms still folded. "Let's see what he's got."
". . ."
"Duel!" x2
You Xuan: LP 4000
Yuuichi: LP 4000
"I'll take the first turn! Draw!"
Yuuichi claimed the first turn.
"I summon 'Hell Dragon' in Attack Position!"
A majestic black dragon appeared on his field, its long tail swaying as it let out a majestic dragon's cry.
Yamamoto Yuuichi was confident in his opening hand.
A four-star monster with 2000 attack power was a rare card, and summoning such a powerful monster right off the bat was usually a good strategy. Not to mention that one of the two face-down cards in his back row was the powerful trap card, "Bottomless Trap Hole," which would destroy and banish any monster with an attack power of 1500 or higher upon their summon.
This strong opening play would be enough for him to take control of the duel against most students.
"My turn, draw!" You Xuan's turn began. "I activate the spell card, Angel's Charity, allowing me to draw three cards from my deck and then discard two cards from my hand."
Taking advantage of this exchange match, he decided to test out a deck he had recently purchased from the Academy's higher-level department but hadn't used much yet.
"I activate the field spell card, 'Megalith City!' "
The spell card was neatly slotted into the extra slot on the Duel Disk with a crisp click, and the entire dueling field transformed with a seismic wave of shifting terrain. Crisscrossing overpasses rose up, occupying the entire dueling arena.
"Megaliths?" Yuuichi smiled wryly. "A pretty standard deck, I see."
You Xuan continued, "I normal summon 'Mixer Machine' in defense position."
Using the animated summoning style, he brought out a mechanized mixer truck in a face-up defense position. The truck's wheels spun like fists, its mixer whirred, and its headlights shone like a pair of cute, big eyes.
[Mixer Machine: ATK 0 / DEF 2200]
Yuuichi furrowed his brows.
While it had a defense power of 2200, its attack power was a mere 0, rendering "Bottomless Trap Hole" useless.
"I activate the effect of 'Mixer Machine.' By tributing one Machine-type monster on my field, I can special summon a non-WIND 'Megalith' monster from my deck.
Since 'Mixer Machine' is a Machine-type monster itself, I'll tribute it!"
The mixer drum on the back of the truck spun wildly, creating a green whirlwind that swallowed the entire vehicle. The mixer truck then transformed into a golden light and dissolved into a summoning vortex.
"I special summon this card from my deck—
—'Submarine Machine'! Come forth!"
[Submarine Machine: ATK 800]
Yuuichi glanced at his back row again. With only 800 attack power, the "Bottomless Trap Hole" still couldn't be activated.
"Hmph, what's the point of summoning such a weak monster?" he scoffed.
At this point, Yuuichi clearly hadn't realized the gravity of his situation.
"I enter the battle phase. 'Submarine Machine' attacks!" You Xuan commanded.
"A direct attack?" Yuuichi exclaimed in surprise.
"That's right. 'Submarine Machine' can ignore other monsters and attack directly!"
"Tch, a sneaky move." Yuuichi grunted, "But even so, it's only a measly 800 damage."
"At this moment, the field spell 'Megalith City' activates its effect!" You Xuan explained, "When a 'Megalith' monster battles, I can send one 'Megalith' monster from my deck to the graveyard.
During damage calculation only, the attacking monster's original ATK and DEF are swapped!"
"What?!" Yuuichi's expression changed.
If its attack and defense were swapped, that would mean...
"I send 'Kite Machine' from my deck to the graveyard, swapping the ATK and DEF of 'Submarine Machine'!"
[Submarine Machine: ATK 800 → ATK 1800]
"Ugh, 1800 attack..."
The little submarine took to the air, and a torpedo ripped through the air, exploding on Yuuichi with a loud bang. He staggered back two steps, gritting his teeth from the simulated impact.
[Yuuichi: LP 4000 → LP 2200]
"Damn it." Yuuichi wiped his mouth and snarled, "Not bad."
"The second effect of 'Submarine Machine' activates. After this card has battled, it can change to defense position.
Additionally, the effect of 'Megalith City' ends, returning its DEF to its original value."
The little submarine struck and then retreated, turning its back to Yuuichi and taking a defensive stance.
[Submarine Machine: DEF 1800]
"I'll set three cards and end my turn."
